Hogwarts
Chapter-2
The months leading to September 1st couldn't have been anymore slower. The matron was less than pleased when she showed up with Apollo, the Raven.she threatened to let the bird out of its cage assuming he'd fly away, not that Edallyn thought it would work, considering that Apollo, the Raven is a magical bird. But it would be too risky to reveal to her that, so in order to appease her She had to agree to do more chores and promise her that the bird won't be a bother.
The days passed by, the only interesting thing She ever did was reading her textbooks. Edallyn had started with the extra books She had gotten, as to know more about the wizarding world. The social etiquette and norms that came with being the heiress to a family that was part of the high society, was honestly exhausting and some of them were quiet outdated as well, at least outdated in the muggle world. But it was necessary.
The school books were admittedly much more engaging and a fun read.
Soon the day to leave to hogwarts arrived. Edallyn woke with a sense of excitement and nervousness. She finished breakfast and set out with her trunk to kings cross. The matron had refused to give her any money for hailing a taxi, so She had to take the bus, using her own savings. She had set out early, just in case of any delays so She arrived at the station with plenty of time to spare.
The station was packed with muggles trying to get to work, the platform 9 3/4 was fairly easy to find, as professor Mcgonagall had informed her about it. She steeled her nerve and her more than justifiable fear that She was just going to crash and closed her eyes and broke into a run.
The first thing She saw when She opened her eyes was the bright red Hogwarts express, in all its glory. She stood there gaping before correcting her pure blood social faux pas. She then proceeded to board the train, lugging her trunk behind her. She entered a compartment which was at the tail end of the train. She took out her book on wizarding traditions and waited for the train to start on its journey.
The station was abuzz with activity in the next 20 minutes, which was expected as the trains departure was at 11 and there was only 10 more minutes left for it to go. She could see a blond headed family standing a few feet away from the window of her compartment, with their son. An old woman who was summoning a toad, handing it to her grandson. A bushy haired girl in school robes standing with her clearly muggle parents.
There was a stark difference between the purebloods who were raised knowing and following their tradition and the others. They seem to be more composed and expressionless, which could be easily mistaken as appearing cold. They were also the only ones wearing proper robes .Whereas the others seem to be –if not wearing their hearts on their sleeves– more open with their emotions, hugging and kissing their children. And wearing all sorts of muggle clothing.
The trains whistle blew, signalling that it's nearing the time to departure. The effect was immediate, the children were made to board the train, their parents helping them.
The train gave one last whistle and started chugging, jerking the train to move. And Soon after crossing the tunnel the scenery changed into greenery.
Edallyn would be lying if she said she was expecting to make friends with anyone during the train ride. Which would explain why she flinched with surprise as the compartment door slammed open few minutes after departure. There was the blond haired boy she saw back at the station. He looked and screamed aristocrat, with his tailored robes and his angular face with unique gray eyes. He paused as he noticed that someone was occupying the compartment.
"My apologies, I did not notice that the compartment was already occupied. Do you mind sharing with me and my friends? Everywhere else is already full"
Now saying She was perfectly alright with letting them in, would ask be a lie. She was riddled with anxiety, She was not ready for a social interaction this soon. But nevertheless this was a chance at making friends, a chance that was practically thrusted at her.
"It's quiet alright, and yes you may join me." Oof.
The blond then proceed to enter and stowed away his luggage at the over head compartment. Three more people, whom She assume are his friends, followed him inside.
The first boy had dark skin, short hair and hazel brown eyes. The second boy had tanned skin, wavy brown hair that curled at the ends, high cheekbones and molten brown eyes. The third, was a girl who had light skin, black hair cut till her chin and navy blue eyes. All of them had tailored robes on that screamed aristocrats.
After they had gotten comfortable they then proceeded to introduce themselves.
"Thank you. I'm Draco Malfoy,Heir to the Most Noble House of Malfoy.",said the blond.
" I'm Blaise Zabini, Heir to the House of Zabini", Said the dark skinned boy.
"I'm Theodore Nott, Heir to the Most Ancient and Noble House of Nott.", said the brown eyed boy.
" I'm Pansy Parkinson, Heiress to the House of Parkinson." Said the girl.
Well, it seemed like She was currently with the children of the paragons of high society. Suddenly She was glad She had gotten the books on wizarding etiquette, it would have been highly embarrassing if She were to have made a fool of herself.
" A pleasure to make you acquaintance, I'm Edallyn Powell, Heiress to the Most Ancient and Noble House of Peverell."
The purebloods' parents have evidently made a stellar job raising them, seeing that the only sign of their shock was the widen pupil of their eyes. Unlike my earlier ahemfaux pas.
As per custom, Malfoy was the first person to speak as their family was the one with the most money and influence even if Notts family was the most ancient one.
"Heiress Peverell?"He asked with a slight confusion and disbelief in his tone." If I may ask, why is your last name Powell and not peverell?"
" I am unable to change my last name to peverell, as i have a muggle father and have to therefore bear his last name, at least until my fifteenth birthday."
Their faces betrayed their distaste with every curl of their lip or twitch of their eyebrows, as they came to the conclusion that they were sitting with a half blood. Edallyn was sure that the only reason they hadn't said anything rude or straight up try to leave was the fact that she was a peverell. The heiress ring on her left hand proved as much. And the fact that they'd surely deduced from her introduction that she was aware of the pureblood customs and would certainly be able to embarrass them in the pureblood circles by voicing a feud against their family.
Not that she'd do that, and certainly not for something as inconsequential as that.
"Oh.."Malfoy said in distaste." And your mother?"
"She died giving birth to me, but as far as I'm aware she had magical blood"
"I can't imagine living with muggles!Barbaric people" pansy said shivering in disgust.
" Well, they are prone to actively protesting against matters that they consider abnormal. It certainly wasn't anything pleasant living with them. But I wouldn't dub them primitive by any lengths."Said Edallyn.
"You've been living with muggles all your life, but you're aware of pureblood customs?" Questioned Nott. He has been quietly observing Edallyn's countenance and the way she introduced herself contributed to the to the fact that she knew pureblood customs. But that in itself would have not been a surprise given that fact that she is a heiress to such a prominent house, but knowing that she was raised by muggles, it sure is one.
"I've only been aware of the wizarding world for 3 months as of today. Everything I know of it, is from what I have read in books. And for the pureblood customs, it is only proper I know all the tradition and etiquette that comes with my responsibility as a heiress." Answered Edallyn, turning to observe the brown haired boy who had taken the seat closer to the door, the one the most further away from her. He seemed curious and does not seemed to be posturing as much as Malfoy and Parkinson, with their polite facade concealing their distaste. Distaste that was, surprisingly, morphing into consideration when she mentioned learning pureblood customs.
"Most muggle-raised half bloods don't bother learning the wizarding tradition and customs and do I even need to mention the mudbloods, who come into our world and do not wish to adapt?" Sneered Malfoy, assuming an air of disgust and intense loathing whilst mentioning the muggleborns.
"That is rather improper." Commented Edallyn, shaking her head. "Wanting the Wizards to change their ways to accommodate their needs while they don't bother to learn the traditions of wizards."
"Yes, it is. That's the reason why us,purebloods, dislike muggleborns and muggle-raised wizard folk. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are not of pureblood pedigree, as the wizarding population of Britain believe so."Said Zabini, shifting and putting his left ankle on his right knee and leaning back into the seat.
And so the conversation flowed uninterrupted until Malfoy stood, saying he was going to seek out Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived, and exited the compartment.
"Harry Potter" said Parkinson, looking at the ceiling of the compartment. " Draco's been going on and on about him all summer. Saying how he's going to befriend the boy-who-lived." She shook head and turned to Edallyn, "Say Powell, what do you know about him?"
"Hmm...he is a celebrity...right? Famous for his apparent defeat of the Dark Lord", said Edallyn, amused. Personally, she did not believe how a one year old babywas able to defeat a wizard who was said to be the most powerful Dark Lord in all of last 7 centuries, as quoted by the 'The most notable witches & wizards of the 21st century'.
"You don't believe it?,questioned Nott, tilting his head sideways."Many people would ostracise you for doubting their precious little hero's credibility."
"This Harry Potter was said to be a year old and the Dark Lord a very powerful wizard,am I correct?" At their nods she continued. " I cannot possibly believe that a baby that could barely speak could defeat a Dark lord. There must've been other factors involved. Like his parents casting any protective wards or charms, before they died, obviously, something the DarkLord overlooked?"
"I can see how you may not believe in his apparent defeat." Zabini said nodding."but the rest of the population do not view it as such. They believe that Potter was the one to vanquish him. The regular reminder from Dumbledore that 'the boy-who-lived,our saviour,is well cared for and living safely' does not help."
Parkinson too nodded, agreeing with Zabini. " Something I wish you can clarify for me, just exactly how much positions does Dumbledore hold? And what on Gaea's green earth is a Supreme Mug Wump?" Questioned Edallyn, looking absolutely bewildered.
Nott burst out laughing, something that doesn't happen very often she'd assume, going by the shocked look on Zabini's and Parkinson's faces. "Dumbledore holds 2 very prominent positions within Britain, that is, the position of Chf. Warlock of the Wizengamot and the position of Headmaster of Hogwarts. He is also the Supreme MugWump of the international Confederation of Wizards, shortly the ICW." Explained Nott after calming down, but seeing the confusion on Edallyn's face he continued to expound. "The ministry of magic is the government of the wizarding folk, they have several departments within to ensure the laws are being followed. The Wizengamot is a separate body of members that oversee the function of the ministry, and also conduct any trails. It is also their duty to introduce and revise laws to suit the changing times. It consists of mainly lords and ladies of old families and also department heads. The Chf. Warlock is the head of the Wizengamot. It was founded before the ministry was. The ICW on the other hand, is a international governing body that consists of representatives of every magical nation around the globe. They mostly preside over the rules and regulations that affect issues on a international scale and also of any interactions between nations in an official capacity. The supreme Mug Wump is the elected leader of the ICW."
Edallyn blinked, shaking off her shock at the new information. Making a mental note to look up these later on." Is there no Restrictions on how many positions a person can hold? Is nobody concerned about how he could handle all that pressure at once? What if he overlooks important issues, just because he has no time to spare?" She asked sound dubious at his competency.
Parkinson sighed and spoke sounding frustrated, "That is a issue many lords from the dark faction have brought up at Wizengamot meetings, but always end up getting out vetoed by the light faction, who refuse to believe that Dumbledore could be anything less than perfect and merlin save anyone else else who mentions otherwise."
Just as Edallyn opened her mouth to ask about what the light and dark faction was, the door slammed open to reveal a bushy hair brunette and a round faced boy who was standing behind her.
"Have any of you seen a toad?", She demanded in a bossy voice, looking straight into her face, not noticing the glare of the other three. "Neville here has lost one." Neville, the boy standing behind, who had clearly seen the less than impressed and angry looks of the others, was trembling head to toe and tugging at the brunette's sleeve, presumably wanting to leave.
"We have not seen any toad)" Spat Parkinson looking with clear disgust, she pointed her nose upwards and spoke," If you can be so kind as to excuse yourself. I have no wish to further stay in yourpresence."
"You are being very rude, you know" said the brunette frowning whilst narrowing her eyes. By now the light tugging of her sleeves had turned into Neville forcefully pulling her arm, to no avail.
"Oh! forgive me, but I don't understand. Seeing as you're the one who came into our compartment without knocking, then proceeding to demand something! Not even introducing yourself! Exactly how is pansy the rude one ?" Questioned Zabini, raising an eyebrow.
The brunette turned an unflattering red,"My name is Hermione Granger.", she said in a loud voice, not at all sounding apologetic, only looking embarrassed.
Before any of us could respond, a voice that clearly belonged to Malfoy, did. "Move aside you filthy mudblood, you're blocking the way!" He walked in, just as granger gasped and moved back, looking angry. Neville had whimpered when Malfoy turned up. How pathetic.
Malfoy had red face with angry eyes, he walked in scowling, looking to be in a terrible mood. He shut the door close and locked out Granger and Neville before either of them could retort. He sat down in his corner, with his arms crossed and stared at the passing scenery.
Parkinson, Nott and Zabini exchanged confused looks. Edallyn turned to the Malfoy heir and asked in a hesitant voice,"Was everything alright with Potter?" The effect was immediate,Parkinson sucked in a sharp breath and pursed her lips, as if waiting. Zabini, too, was looking at Malfoy as if expecting him to start shouting. Nott was part grimacing and part concerned.
Well shit. Looked like the Malfoy heir was to be left alone when sulking lest he throws a tantrum. Malfoy, meanwhile, had looked up at her dead in the eye, he looked like he was contemplating something. Finally, he sighed in defeat and revealed what happened. "Potter was at the front of the train with the blood-traitor Weasley of all people!" He sneered." When I kindlyoffered my hand in friendship after pointing out that he was making friends with the wrong sort he turned down my hand and insulted me!!" He was red faced yet again, and looking at each of our faces as if ask if we could believe what had happened to him.
Parkinson blinked out her surprise, no doubt at avoiding a tantrum, and sighed. "If the rumours of his upbringing are true, he would have no idea of any thing of what really transpired." She sighed and pulled out a magazine.Malfoy only scowled and turned away.
Edallyn who had many questions but did but wisely did not ask the Malfoy heir, turned to her right to ask Nott, seeing that he was the only unoccupied. Zabini was immersed in a book that he'd had taken out when the Malfoy tantrum was avoided. Nott seeing her confused look scooted closer from the corner of the seat near to the door, to her.
But before he could offer any explanation, the door once again slammed open. The occupants of the compartment except Malfoy, looked up warily as if to say 'what now?'. Malfoy snapped his head up to glare at who ever dared to disturb his sulking. Edallyn almost expected it to be Granger again, but instead it was an old lady wearing an apron that said 'HoneyDukes' in an elegant cursive, pushing a trolley brimming with confections.
"Hello dears, anything you would like from the trolley?",she asked with a warm smile, causing the wrinkles around her eyes to crinkle.
Edallyn and Zabini politely declined, whilst the others bought some cauldron cakes, liquorice wands and bars of Milk chocolate. After returning to their seats Nott then started to explain.
"What Draco had offered was not only a offer of friendship but a connection between the House of Malfoy and House of Potter. The fact that Potter had turned down Draco in such an inappropriate manner without even acknowledging what he was offering with proper respect is highly insulting to Draco."
Edallyn nodded her understanding,"What about the Weasleys and them being blood traitors? A blood traitor is person who has renounced the old ways despite it being their tradition right?" She asked to confirm as she does remember reading about them, but had not certainly not read far enough to know about the offering of being allies.
"Yes, you are correct. The Weasleys have been blood traitors for they turned their back on tradition. There is also the feud between the Malfoys and the Weasleys that added more insult to injury. It is what Draco meant by saying potter was "consorting with the wrong sort". If Potter is seen to be in the company of blood traitors, most families would assume him of turning the his back against traditions too. It is the reason why almost no self-respecting family that follow the old ways would ever interact with a Weasley."
Edallyn made a noise of agreement."And what are the rumour of Potters upbringing?"
What kind of rumours would it be? If she had to guess, it would have been something ludicrous exaggeration of his abilities or his lifestyle, because what else could a young celebrities rumours of his home life be about?
"It was rumoured that Potter was taking in by his muggle aunt, his mothers sister, and thus had no idea about magic existing!" Nott said his voice coloured in disbelief. Personally he did not believe in such rumours for how could Dumbledore leave his precious saviour without any knowledge about his heritage? Especially seeing that he's the heir to the House of Potter. But the way he reacted to Draco's offer, gives credibility to the rumour, nevertheless he'd have to wait and see before coming to a conclusion.
What? Surely not. Was this just a stupid rumour or the truth?
"Surely not? Did he not have any other relatives?" Questioned Edallyn sounding dubious. Any wizarding relatives from his fathers side maybe?
Nott shrugged indicating he didn't know. He stood up to retrieve a book from his trunk and got comfortable with a bar of chocolate. Edallyn sighed and turned to face the window picking up her book on wizarding tradition that she'd abandoned. She was certainly not expecting the conversation to be this serious. She'd thought they be discussing what houses they get sorted into and other inane chit chat after the initial frostiness, that they seemed to be getting over rather quickly, surprisingly. Then again Zabini did say that the only reason they'd hate a muggle raised was if they made no effort to learn about their traditions and she didn't fall into that category.
The rest of the train ride went by in comfortable silence, only breaking when they had to get changed into their school robes after the announcement that they'd reach in half an hours time. The excitement was palpable, and they'd all have in an unvoiced decisions put away their books and magazine. The night sky was filled with stars sparkling brightly, there was no cloud obstructing their view.
"I'm so excited", squealed Parkinson. Almost vibrating in her seat."What house do you think you'll be in Powell?" She asked her, turning to face her fully.
Edallyn winced, she wasn't too fond of being addressed by her last name." I have no concrete idea maybe Ravenclaw?" She said tilting her head considering."Also you may call me by my First name, I'm not too fond of my last name." She added, looking at all of them, giving them permission to use it.
"Well in that case, you may call me Pansy, Edallyn."
"You may be call me Draco"
"Blaise"
"Names' Theodore, but please call me Theo."
"Of course, and what house do you think you'll be in?"
"Slytherin" said the three of them in a chorus. "All of our families have been in slytherin so we would too." Expanded Draco.
"How are we sorted into the houses?" Edallyn asked, hoping they had an idea, for Professor Mcgonagall had not said so how. The houses are separated by the qualities one may find in a person, but how do figure out what qualities they have?
"No idea, our parents have refused to tell, saying it would ruin the surprise", groused Blaise, looking annoyed. Draco,Pansy and Theo nodded in agreement, looking quiet out too.
'We will be reaching the Hogsmead station in 5 minutes, students are required to leave their pets and trunks onboard. They will be taken to the school separately.'
Ensuing The announcement, noise could be heard from the other compartments, no doubt the students last minute packing and brushing down their robes to look presentable after the look 8 hr ride.
The sudden cawing from our in resident Raven, jerked the other three into surprise.
"A Raven!", exclaimed Draco." What a curious choice of bird Edallyn!"
"Curious?" She questioned.
"Raven are very picky with who they bond with, and even then they aren't normally very affectionate with their bonded, as compared to say an owl", explained Theo, looking with a bizarre and amused look at Apollo, the Raven who was nuzzling into my hand.
"What's his name?" Asked Blaise, trying to come closer to stroke at the jet black plumage but almost losing his fingers in the process."oh! That's one feisty Raven!"
Edallyn sighed when Blaise asked for apollos name. "His name is Apollo", she sighed."He wouldn't answer to anything else after he heard that one."
Draco, Pansy and Theo burst into laughter, Blaise too looked very amused."well don't worry, Ravens are the sacred bird to Apollo so it isn't too out of topic", he said trying to hide his snicker.
Edallyn sighed yet again,"that's what I've been saying to console myself these past few months." Normally she didn't think it was too weird to have a pet named after a god/goddess, but having a Raven named Apollo was giving her the nerves! What if Apollo got offended and decided to curse her? Which is a ludicrous thought, but she just found out magicexisted and that there's a whole secret society! What's next? News that mount Olympus is parked above Empire State Building in New York and that the gods are alive?! She shuddered.
Just then the train screeched to a halt. The students got down in droves. Edallyn followed the others as they they too exited the compartment and made way towards the left side where a huge man was shouting "firs' year' this way".
Edallyn's eyes widened when she took in just how giant he was as they approached closer towards what looked like rafts docked at a river side. The other students were moving toward the right side of the station. Draco who had noticed her reaction smirked and leaned closer,"He is a half-giant, my father says he works here as a groundskeeper after they expelled him and snapped his want."
"No more tha' five to a boa'"
Edallyn , Draco, Theo, Blaise and Pansy shared raft). "That's nice a boat" Edallyn said whispered underneath her breath in a sarcastic manner. It was but a raft it didn't have anything to hold on to! what if anyone fell off and into the lake? Blaise and pansy who were close enough to hear her smirked in amusement.
Soon after, their first look of Hogwarts came into view. Edallyn couldn't keep in her exclamation of awe, it truly was a magnificent castle! It seemed to be aglow from the light from the candles. They rafts moved underneath the castle into the docks, from where the half-giant led inside to professor Mcgonagall who was standing in front of massive doors.
"The firs' years professor' Mcgonagall"
"Thank you Hagrid, I'll take it from here." Said professor Mcgonagall, turning to face us. She then proceeded to give us a speech on the four Hogwarts houses.
“The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting.” she then turned and went inside the great hall.
Nothing interesting happened after that, except for the appearances of the house ghost, complaining about a 'peeves'.
Shortly after, Professor Mcgonagall returned and asked them to form a single file line and follow her inside. The great hall was breathtaking big and beautiful. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the hall was another long table where the teachers were sitting.
In front of the teachers table there was a stool and a patchy old hat placed atop it. The hall was silent as if waiting for something. Before she could ask Theo, who was standing In front of her what it was that everyone was waiting for, the hat tore across the brim and started to sing.
Oh, you may not think I’m pretty,
But don’t judge on what you see,
I’ll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I’m the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There’s nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can’t see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve,
and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on!
Don’t be afraid!
And don’t get in a flap!
You’re in safe hands (though I have none)
For I’m a Thinking Cap!”
The hall burst into applause, shocking the first years out of their surprise, and jerking them into joining in the applause. Edallyn was relived that all they had to do was try on a hat! Professor Mcgonagall then took out a scroll and started to read out names in alphabetical order.
“When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted,” she said.
“Abbott, Hannah!”
A pink-faced girl with blonde pigtails stumbled out of line, put on the hat, which fell right down over her eyes, and sat down.
“HUFFLEPUFF!” shouted the hat.
The table on the right cheered and clapped as Hannah went to sit down at the Hufflepuff table. Edallyn saw the ghost of the Fat Friar waving merrily at her.
“Bones, Susan!”
“HUFFLEPUFF!” shouted the hat again, and Susan scuttled off to sit next to Hannah.
“Boot, Terry!”
“RAVENCLAW!”
The table second from the left clapped this time; several Ravenclaws stood up to shake hands with Terry as he joined them.
"Brocklehurst, Mandy” went to Ravenclaw too, but “Brown, Lavender” became the first new Gryffindor, and the table on the far left exploded with cheers.
“Bulstrode, Millicent”
"SLYTHERIN!"
“Finch-Fletchley, Justin!”
“HUFFLEPUFF!”
"Finnegan, Seamus"
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Granger, Hermione"
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Longbottom, Neville"
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Malfoy, Draco"
"SLYTHERIN!"
"Moon, Lily"
"RAVENCLAW!"
"Nott, Theodore"
"SLYTHERIN!"
"Parkinson, Pansy"
"SLYTHERIN!"
"Patil, Padma"
"RAVENCLAW!"
"Patil, Parvathi"
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Perks-Anne, Sally"
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Potter, Harry"
There was a dead silence in the hall, then started the whispers. "Harry potter?" "Potter, she said?". The boy who lived was shorter than her, he was probably the shortest in their year. He had jet black hair, pale green eyes with wire-rimmed round glasses. Overall he looked to be rather scrawny. He slowly walked up towards the hat, as if hesitant. He was at sat there for a few seconds, before the hat shouted—
"GRYFFINDOR!"
The cheer from the gryffindor was the loudest yet. Edallyn grew nervous and she swear she could feel butterflies in her stomach. She was pretty sure she missed at least half the first years sorting, thinking about where she would end up.Unless anyone else was there, next person in line was her.
"Powell, Edallyn"
She walked with shaking legs that she desperately hoped weren't visible to anyone, out the corner of her eye She spotted Draco,Pansy and Theo giving her an encouraging look from their seat at the slytherin table, far right side of the hall.
'Hmm',she flinched as she heard a voice in her head, she hadn't been expecting that.
'Um..hello' she thought, hoping the hat could hear her. 'Hello to you too' she heard the hat mutter absently, it was mumbling in her head.
'Yes,yes there's a thirst to learn, a thirst to prove yourself, cunningness too! That's a nice combination!'
'Er...thanks!'
'You're welcome', it replied easily.
'Hmm alright then, better be—' the hat then screamed then screamed the last part out Loud.
"SLYTHERIN"
The Slytherin table broke out in a half-hearted applause, following the lead of Malfoy, who had been the first to clap. She stood up, gave the hat to Professor Mcgonagall and made for the Slytherin table.
"Hello", drawled Malfoy, looking uncharacteristically cheerful.
"And exactly why do you look so joyful?", asked Edallyn, skilfully ignoring the disgusted looks from the other slytherins. She know what they were thinking, they were assuming her to be a mudblood. She mentally shook her head, now wasn't the time to think on that, she'd prove them wrong anyway. After they knew which family she's from they'd know to stay away.
"Oh,nothing. Don't mind me",he said, wearing a grin on his face.
"Don't mind you? Are you sure you can survive without attention",Edallyn asked in mock concern, going as far as to put a hand on her chest. Honestly she wasn't sure where the confidence to act like this was coming from but hey! it didn't look like she was doing something stupid, so she didn't look too hard into it.
" It's quiet hard yes,but I'll brave through it",Draco sniffed, as if talking about how he'd weathered through a great tragedy.
"Oh cease it,you two.", said Pansy sounding amused. "We have to listen to our Esteemed headmasters speech." She added in a mocking voice.
All three of us were trying to keep a straight face, hiding our laughter. Theo and Blaise only rolled their,"And here when I thought you were going to put a stop their dramatics pansy" said Blaise shaking his head in amusement.
Edallyn didn't pay any attention to dumbledore's speech, but just as he was reclaiming his seat, platters of food filled the table. They all piled what they wanted to eat on their plates. Edallyn to say the least was overwhelmed as it was her first time to see so much food at one place. She wasn't starved at the orphanage by any means but they could get only fixed portions of food. To see so much options, and wanting to taste everything, but she knew she'd probably throw up. So she just picked some roasted chicken, mash potatoes and gravy.
The conversation flowed as they were eating, talking about what classes they'd attend and which ones they were most excited about.
"I can't wait for potions, it's taught by professor Snape,he's the youngest potions master ever. He's also my godfather.", boasted Draco.
"Is he here?", she asked, peering at the teachers table. Which is futile as she had no idea how this professor Snape looked like.
"Yes"said Draco, pointing at a sallow faced hooked nose man sitting next to professor Mcgonagall. "He is also our head of house, many say he is partial to the slytherins but that is only because of the bias against the slytherins in school."
The rest of meal progressed by, the food disappeared and the desserts were served. There were many options here too, ice creams, puddings, jello, tarts, cakes and many more she couldn't name. She choose some vanilla ice cream, with a topping of strawberries.
After they full and feeling like they could fall asleep then and there, the head master rose. He warned off the students from the forbidden forest, not using magic in the corridor, quidditch trails, but the most weird and interesting one was that—
“And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corri- dor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death.”
"What on earth is he on about, that's a stupid thing to say to children. They will all be going to explore the area now!" Commented Edallyn. Theo made a sound of agreement.
Then after singing a horrible school song, in which no teacher partook, the headmaster sent us to bed, wiping his tears and mumbling about how music brings out the best in people.
The Slytherin dormitories were in the dungeons, under the lake. We followed our prefect, walking down a corridor away from the stairs. The older slytherins were now looking at her with a indistinguishable look. Perhaps they were shocked as they saw Draco speak to her? But whatever it was She had to find a way to let them know She wasn't to be messed with, she had no wish to get bullied. Verbally or otherwise.
Finally, they reached a wall that was blank except for a carving of snakes at the corner. The prefect stopped and turned to look at us.
"This is the entrance to the Slytherin dormitories, it is password accessed. It is changed every week, the new password is pinned to the noticed board in the common room. The first weeks password is Boomslang. As soon as she said the password, the walls slide opened to reveal a huge space with comfy looking couches, rugs and plenty of fireplaces all around. There were green and silver tapestries hanging near the walls, at the centre of the ceiling there was a glittering chandelier. There were two archways leading off to, presumably the dorms.
The first years were shook of their transfixed State by the prefect.
"I am your fifth year prefect Arinah Fawley. And this the other prefect for the fifth year Adrian Carrow. First off, congratulations on being chosen as a Slytherin, it a house of cunningness and ambition, but it is also the house that is hated by 3/4 of the school. You must stay together at all times whilst going to lessons or otherwise. Do not put yourself in a spot that would make it easier for the other houses to bully you. You must uphold the honour of our House, Slytherin has been wining the house cup for the past 7 years. You should keep up your grades and earn as much as house points you can. If you're going to do something that is against the rules, do not be caught. The girls dorms are at the right side and boys' at the left. Two to a room for the girls, three to a room for the boys.Breakfast is at 7, I want you assembled here at 6.50. Do not be late." Fawley then nodded at us, and went to take a seat at a couch with her friends.
"Well boys, we'll see you tomorrow morning. Goodnight!" Said pansy as she pulled her towards the dorms. She managed to throw a 'good night' over her shoulder at the other three. The archway opens up to a staircase which led to a long corridor at the end of which was a long floor length window opening to the view of the lake. There were candle between each door that lit up when we walked passed them.
Pansy and I walked until the end of the corridor, towards the last room on the right.
The door opened to a spacious room that had two poster beds, desks and chair, a book case above it and it's own fireplace with two wingback chairs on a plush emerald green rug opposite the beds. The beds' frame was of some dark wood pinned with plush pillows and the sheets were silk. All In all the room was pretty comfortable.
Pansy and she, quietly took their toiletries and got ready for bed, and were off like a light with a muttered 'goodnight' to each other. Too tired to stay up and talk about tomorrow's classes.
