Chapter 2

Days turned into nights, and nights bled into days as Severus Snape found himself immersed in the world of the small, fragile child who lay before him in the ICU. Her name remained a mystery, lost amidst the chaos of her arrival, and with each passing moment, Severus grew increasingly frustrated by the apathy of those who should have been searching for her family.

The child remained silent, her eyes wide with fear as she clung to the edges of consciousness. Severus watched her with a mixture of concern and determination, his heart heavy with the weight of her suffering. He had seen many patients in his time, but there was something about this child that stirred a deep-seated ache within him.

"Can you hear me, little one?" Severus murmured softly, his voice a gentle whisper in the stillness of the room. "You're safe here, I promise."

But the child remained silent, her gaze fixed on some distant point beyond the confines of the hospital room. Severus sighed, his frustration mounting as he continued to tend to her wounds with painstaking care. She was small and fragile, a mere wisp of a girl lost in a world that had failed to protect her.

As the days stretched into weeks, Severus found himself growing increasingly disillusioned with the system that had allowed this child to slip through the cracks. The police showed little interest in finding her family, their efforts half-hearted at best. And the child herself seemed to retreat further into herself with each passing day, her trauma manifesting in the haunted shadows that flickered behind her eyes.

Severus tried to reach her, to bridge the chasm of silence that lay between them, but his words fell on deaf ears. He spoke to her of hope and resilience, of a future filled with possibility, but still, she remained unmoved.

"You don't have to be afraid," Severus whispered, his voice laced with desperation. "I'm here to help you, but you need to let me in."

But the child said nothing, her silence a barrier that Severus could not breach. He felt a pang of guilt gnawing at his conscience, a sense of helplessness in the face of a pain that he could not begin to comprehend.

And so, Severus continued to care for the child, his actions fueled by a sense of duty and determination. He tended to her wounds with painstaking precision, his hands gentle yet sure as he worked to heal the physical scars that marred her fragile frame.

But as the days turned into weeks, Severus couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more, something hidden beneath the surface of her silence. And try as he might, he feared that he would never uncover the truth behind the haunted eyes of the child who lay before him.
