It’s an engine
Greaseball had been watching his dining car like a hawk. As Dinah’s belly grew so did Greaseball’s anxiety. The moment he found out she was pregnant he started waiting on her hand and foot. Though he had to ask Buffy and Ashley to help with cooking as that was far from his strong suit.
“Oh honestly Greasey you act like I’ll shatter at a slight summer breeze.” Dinah rolled her eyes as Greaseball gently held her.
”Sorry doll it’s just… I mean… YOU’VE A BABY INSIDE YA.” He said sounding star struck as he carefully rested his hand on Dinah’s eight month old baby bump. “You’re so amazing.” Dinah giggled.
“Can you feel em movin?” Dinah asked resting her hand on top of Greaseball’s.
”Yeah I can, he’s really squirming in there. A real wriggle worm.” His voice trembled with joy.
”And how do you know they’re a he?” She chirped.
”Just a guess” Greaseball said with a small shrug. Dinah rolled her eyes and laughed.
”Well I’m almost certain it’s a girl.” She smiled. “Though I’ll love em either way.”
”Yeah me too doll, boy, girl, engine, or coach. They’ll be beautiful Dinah.” He said leaning in and pulling his wife closer. “Just a couple more weeks.” The couple smiled and cuddled, enjoying the peace and quiet while they could. Both of them painfully aware of what’s in store for them if that baby is anything like their father. After a while Dinah tapped Greaseball’s shoulder.
”Alright honey I gotta go powder my nose.” She said standing up.
”Babe, we’re married, if you need to take a dump just say that.” Greaseball said with a laugh.
”looks like it’ll be my job to tech our baby some manners.” Dinah said with an eye roll. She wheeled away laughing. Greaseball sat for awhile waiting for his wife to return, he started to get a sinking feeling in his gut that something was off. He got up and rolled over to their bathroom and knocked on the door.
”Hey doll? You alright in there?” Greaseball called out.
”Greaseball? I think my water broke!” Dinah shouted frantically.
”Aww that’s no big deal honey, I can fix it.” Greaseball said opening the door, only for his smile to falter when he found the love of his life laying on the floor.
“Oh for starlight’s sake. I mean I think the baby’s coming!” Dinah could swear she saw the light bulb in Greaseball’s head turn on.
”Oh okay… wait WHAT!!!” Greaseball suddenly panicked, rushing over to his love and gently scooping her up in his arms. “I gotta-I gotta get to the mechanics!” He said frantically racing out the door.
It has been a very long and excruciating eight hours for the young couple. At one point Greaseball was certain Dinah was going to break his hand. He didn’t care about that much though, the only things on his mind were making sure both his wife and baby were okay. He was so relieved when they finally came out he didn’t hear them call out the gender.
Now he was still sitting right next to his precious dining car, stroking her forehead and whispering sweet nothings in her ear. After she got the chance to hold her baby for a little while the mechanics took them away to clean them up and check them out. Greaseball had been is so awestruck seeing the two of them, that moment was permanently etched inside Greaseballs brain. Their peace was broken when Gunk, the mechanic who helped deliver their child, came inside their small room, holding a little baby swaddled in a light pink blanket.
”Awww there’s my little girl!” Dinah exclaimed, her arms reaching out to take their sleeping bundle of joy.
”Wait.. it’s a girl!?” Greaseball gasped. Dinah giggled as Greaseball peeked over at the newborn’s bright red face. “Aww what a cute little coach, just like her mama!”
”Actually you’ll wanna take another guess Greaseball.” The Gunk piped up. As he said that the baby yawned, as she did they heard the rev of an engine and Dinah felt it vibrating in her arms. “A strong, heathy diesel. Just like her dad.”
”ooohh boy.” Dinah huffed, “I can tell already she’s gonna be a handful.”
“Don’t worry doll, there’s nothing Greaseball junior can throw a me that I can’t handle.” Greaseball said with a smirk.
”So whatcha gonna name her?” Gunk asked “Greaseball junior would probably get a little confusing.”
”Well actually Greaseball is her last name.” Dinah chirped.
”Wait really? You mean to tell me I’ve known you for years and never knew your first name!” Gunk said surprised, eyeing up Greaseball senior.
”Uuuhh yeah… my first name is… Turbo.” Greaseball said smiled bashfully, it’s been awhile since anyone’s called him that.
”We did discuss it before she was born, we agreed that if our baby was an engine we’d name them Tank.” Dinah answered Gunks question.
”Awww ain’t that cute. I’ll leave you three alone for awhile, I got some paperwork to fill out.” Gunk said, waving goodbye to the new family and backing away. “Today marks the day Greaseball became plural… and my life became so much harder.” He muttered quietly to himself, knowing he was probably gonna see a lot of the little engine when she got older.
“You wanna hold her?” Dinah looked up at Greaseball with a mile wide grin.
“I… uh… yes.” Greaseball was taken aback and a little nervous, though you’d never catch him admitting it.
”Alright, come here.” Dinah called out “Take her in your arms and make sure you’re supporting her head.” She instructed as she carefully placed the newborn in Greaseball’s big strong arms. The moment Greaseball felt the weight of his new daughter in his arms he felt his engine heat up. He felt his mechanical heart leap in his chest when her big, bright yellow eyes opened and met his. He’d never be able to explain the overwhelming joy and fear he felt gazing down at her.
”H-Hi” was all he was able to muster. The baby gave him a big toothless grin, she made a cute little noise. The overwhelming emotions were enough to make Greaseball cry.
