Ron had always thought of one thing when he thought of love. Someone who was wholly focused on him. So when his best friend's dad started showing him more attention he wanted all he could. First he purposefully would forget things just to come back to talk to him, even if it meant his friends thought he was forgetful. Soon it became any chance he got he was over to talk to James whether Harry was there or not. James not knowing how to handle Ron let him be and after years of Ron following him around James talked to Ron.
