How Evergreen Our Group of Friends (Don’t Think We’ll Say That Word Again)
Summary
The day Remus got expelled from St.Marks School for Troubled Youth was the happiest day of his life, the day he attended Howell John’s Public high school could be his second. The Mauraders if they went to an American public school
Note
Hey y’all I thought it’d be fun to write the mauraders in an American public school setting bc why not. I’d like to keep some integrity from most canon and fanon events and characteristics but tbh idk how to go about them yet. It’s all a work in progress! In this AU there’s no magic (I know it’s tragic) but it’s still set at the same time as most other stories. I’m not really sure how school and life was like in the 70s but I think I can make an educated guess.Hope you enjoy :)

Prologue

Remus lupin was the only kid who was juvenile enough to be kicked out of St.Marks School of Troubled Youth. What a terrible name, he always thought. Might as well write “criminal” on his forehead in bold black marker. He wasn’t a criminal. He didn’t think he was, at least most days he didn’t. Some nights he did. More nights often than not.

It wasn’t his fault, most people said it was in his blood, passed down from his father, pass down from the fosters homes, from the old teachers who hadn’t quit yet because they needed they’re last paycheck. Still there was one persons thoughts that could out rule all the others.

The day he was expelled was the happiest day of his life, it was hard to tell though behind the black eye and bloody snarky smile.

Markus Macalister, one year older, 2 times bigger than Remus. No one knew the real reason why he was put in St.Marks. Of course, he was a thug, a dealer, and would pick fights unprompted no matter who the victim was. But no one knew the event that locked him up and sent him to the only school suitable. Rumors spread like rapid fire when he first arrived and continued to burn even when Remus was first sent. “He was in an armed robbery and killed 2 people” “he murdered his parents” “he set a school on fire” Markus never confirmed which, if any were true but he did let them get into people’s heads. Being the scariest guy in a school of scary guys just meant you’d never be the target. One day though he decided to test his luck.

“Remus,” the cold, monotoned voice of his principle Ms. Wurthy brought him back to his head.

“Let’s go.”

He stood up and brushed his sweaty hands against the suit Ms. Wurthy made him wear, one she found the schools abandoned theater costumes department.

If her goal was to make him look presentable he thought it did the opposite, who wants to see a kid drowning in an old wrinkled suit that obviously isn’t his. It was a bad look from the beginning.

The room he walked in was a small, dimly lit office with junk thrown all over the desks, the walls and shelves. The only notable thing he took in was the plaque that read “Dr. Dumbledore.” “

What kind of name is Dumbledore, he thought. Then again, he wasn’t one to talk.

“Good morning! nice to see you Ms. Wurthy,” an old man with long white hair and a long white beard said while shaking her hand.

He looks as weird as his name sounds

“And you just be Remus Lupin,” the man said turning to Remus with a smile. One that reached his eyes with light. It made Rejus uncomfortable.

“Please, sit”

They sat in their seats, Ms. Wurthy with her posed, perfect posture, Dumbledore hunched over his desk with his hands clasped together and Remus, slithering around in the leather chair trying to feel at ease. He couldn’t.

“So, you’ve come to talk about remus’s enrollment?”

This time Remus went still. He hasn’t been paying attention much but from the looks of the building this wasn’t the type of place for him.

“Yes, i know it’s short notice, but his father said if anything happens to come to you, and frankly i just don’t know what to do with him anymore”

She talked about him like he really was a convicted criminal.

“Well, his father was a great friend of mine, and given Remus’s unique…situation, i’d be more than happy to transfer him over, however there are some precautions.”

Remus gritted his teeth

“For Remus’s sake, i think it’d be best not to tell mention St.Marks to any of the students, rumors spread quickly here and it’s easy for it to escalate.”

Remus could’ve rolled his eyes hard enough he would’ve had to pop them back in, but he had just a shred of respect enough to not.

“And, we would have to find a housing solution, since our school doesn’t offer it and Remus is still a minor, but i won’t bore you with that all today,” he said rising out from his chair.

“Ms. Wurthy, we’ll talk again to confirm our details on where Remus will stay but until then it was a pleasure meeting you, and Remus,”

he turned to him

“i’m looking forward for our school year together, your first day starts in three days.”
