Chapter 15
Toni is in her lab, the Expo model is reassembled. Toni blows some dust off of it. She asks JARVIS if he could form a digital wire frame because she needs a projection she can manipulate.
A blue outline slowly covers the top of the model, Toni snaps her fingers as she waits. JARVIS says the scans complete.
Toni asks how many buildings there are and then lifts the hologram.
JARVIS asks if he should include the Belgian waffle stands.
"Again with the sarcasm." James says
Toni moves the model and says the question was rhetorical and asks JARVIS to show her then she sets the model down.
She snaps her fingers and points, the model starts spinning in the direction she pointed in and turns so its right side up, facing the back wall. Toni grabs a chair and sits in front of the model and asks JARVIS what it looks like, then compares it to an atom and points to where the nucleus would be.
Toni tells JARVIS to highlight the unisphere. The globe turns yellow, Toni takes it in her hand and tells JARVIS to lose the footpaths.
JARVIS asks what she's trying to do.
Toni says she's rediscovering a new element.
Lily looks up in excitement at the screen.
Toni tells JARVIS to lose the landscaping, shrubbery, trees, parking lots, exits and entrances and says to structure the protons and neutrons using the pavilions as a framework. Things start moving toward the unisphere, it starts to look more like an element atom. Toni claps her hands and the element expands. Toni looks around it and makes a comment about Howard still taking her to school even though he's been dead for 20 years. She claps her hands again and the element shrinks, she holds it between her fingers. JARVIS says that the element should serve as a replacement for palladium. Toni thanks Howard. JARVIS says the element is impossible to synthesize.
Dumbledore looks at the oldest Potter daughter, thinking she could have been a Ravenclaw if she didn't get kidnapped all those years ago
Toni says to get ready for a major remodel because they're back in hardware mode.
Toni smashes a wall with a sledge hammer a few times, she drops it.
"That looks like fun honestly."
She uses a jackhammer to uncover a panel of electric switches, she takes the door off and attaches some wires. She uses the jackhammer again to make a hole in the ceiling, she throws the wires through the hole. She wheels some crates and opens them, she lifts a metal tube and attaches it to the wall. Some time later all of the tubes are connected, resting on piles of random objects.
Coulson puts in a code and enters the lab and says he heard Toni broke perimeter.
Toni jokes that it was 3 years ago and asks where Coulson's been.
Coulson says he was doing stuff.
"What stuff?"
Toni says that she has too and that she's playing for the home team and calls them 'fabulous furry freak brothers.'
"What's furry?" Alexander asks
"You don't want to know trust me." Henry say
Toni asks if Coulson's going to let her work or if he's there to break her balls.
Coulson walks toward a box and pulls out something that looks like Captain America's shield and asks why its there.
"Fanboy." Nikolai coughs into his hand
Toni looks at him to see what he's talking about and sets down the thing she's holding and asks Coulson to bring it to her.
Coulson asks if she knows what it is.
"Who doesn't know what that is."
Toni says that its what she needs to make her system work. She takes the shield and tells Coulson to lift the coil so he can slide it underneath. Toni grabs a level and sets it on the coil and says its perfectly level before asking Coulson what he wants.
Coulson says that Fury's sending him to New Mexico.
Clint looks at Thor out of the corner of his eye
Toni says its fantastic and calls it the 'land of enchantment.' Then she asks Coulson if he's doing secret stuff there.
Coulson confirms and wishes Toni luck.
Toni thanks him.
Coulson says they need him.
Toni says they need him more than they know.
Coulson tells him they don't need him that much.
"Debatable."
The lights in the lab are turned off. Toni is wearing glasses and has a wrench. She puts a prism in the particle accelerator and rotates it. She sticks a key into it something and turns it on, the lights start dimming more. JARVIS says that he's initializing the prismatic accelerator. Toni tries to turn the wheel with her hands. JARVIS says they're approaching maximum power. The wheel won't move, it starts shaking. She grabs the wrench and uses it to turn the wheel.
The laser starts burning things in its path, cutting a large metal container in half before it reaches the small triangle, the triangle starts to glow blue, Toni turns off the machine and says that that was easy. She ducks under the coils and walks toward the glowing object, she tosses her glasses on the table and sits down. She uses a pair of pliers to lift the triangle. JARVIS congratulates her on creating the new element.
"That's our mother!" Harley says proudly.
Toni puts the new element into an arc reactor. JARVIS says that the reactor has accepted the core and he'll begin running diagnostics. Ivan is building his own arc reactor. He's talking on the phone with Hammer, who's golfing Hammer says he's with senator Stern and that they were going to take a look at the drone designs.
Ivan says they aren't ready.
Hammer asks what he means.
Ivan says he can present them but he can't demonstrate them.
Hammer asks for the difference.
"He really was an idiot." Henry says
Ivan says that they wont fly or shoot.
"They did both of those." Pepper snorts
Hammer asks what they can do because its a weapons demonstration.
Ivan says he can make them salute.
Hammer asks what he means.
"My IQ is dropping every time he speaks." Henry pouts as Wanda shakes her head fondly at him
Hammer says that thats not what they agreed to and that Ivan promised him suits and then he promised him drones.
Ivan has remade his lightning whips.
"Oh shit."
"Language!"
Justin and two men in suits are walking through a lab, they walk into the room where Ivan is. He is sitting with a bird. Hammer says he's confused because Ivan said it wasn't his bird but he likes it now. Then he tells one of his men to take the bird. A man grabs the bird and puts it in a sack.
"Asshole."
Hammer says to also take his pillows and his shoes. The men take them. Hammer asks if Ivan feels bad and says that that's good because its how he feels. He reminds Ivan that they had a contract and that he saved his life and Ivan gives him suits. And says that he doesn't know if Ivan is a genius of a fraud
"He's a genius. An asshole but no doubt a genius."
Hammer says that something good fell into his lap and if it didn't he'd be at Ivan's mercy. He says that he has a piece of Stark tech that he 'pimped out.' and says that Ivan's drones are going to be a backdrop to the demonstration.
Ivan says something in Russian.
Hammer says he doesn't speak Russian.
"That's why he's speaking it."
Hammer says he's going to go to the Expo and he might even get laid.
"Who'd want to sleep with him?" Harley snorts
Hammer points to the other in the room and says that they're Ivan's babysitters and that when he returns they're going to rehash the terms of their agreement and Ivan's going to make good on their arrangement and if he doesn't he's going to be a dead man.
"Empty threat."
Toni is sitting on a chair in her lab and tells Dummy to clean up the mess. JARVIS says its from a blocked number.
Toni says her phone privileges are reinstated and answers the phone and asks Coulson how the land of enchantment.
Ivan asks Toni how she's doing and says he is doubling the cycle.
Toni questions him.
Ivan reminds her that he says double cycle is more power then he says it was good advice.
"And this is why you don't give people who try to kill you advice."
Toni says Ivan sounds good for a dead man. Ivan says she does too.
Toni mutes her microphone and tells JARVIS to trace the call.
Ivan says that the true history of the Stark name would be written.
Toni asks JARVIS where he is.
JARVIS says he's accessing the Oracle grid and traces the call to the eastern seaboard and a map appears on a computer screen.
Ivan says he would do to Toni what Howard did to Anton.
"Good thing he didn't get to."
Toni says it sounds good and they should hash it out.
JARVIS traces the call to the tri-state area then to boroughs outside Manhattan.
Ivan says he hopes Toni's ready, then hangs up.
JARVIS says the call trace is not complete.
"Damn it."
Toni looks around and sees an advertisement for Justin's demonstration at the Expo, she then looks over at the arc reactor, and aggressively slams it into her chest. JARVIS protests.
Toni tells JARVIS to run his tests and assemble the suit.
JARVIS says the effects of the reactor aren't clear.
Toni says she doesn't want to hear it. The reactor gains power and Toni says that it tastes like coconut and metal.
"You can taste that?"
The scene switches to the Expo. Happy, Natasha, Nikolai, Anastasia and Pepper get out of a car. Happy tells them that he'll keep the car down there. Pepper thanks him and walks into the building with Natasha.
An announcer says Hammer's presentation will begin soon in the main pavilion.
Justin does a little dance as he gets on stage.
Several people laugh at him
Hammer thanks them for coming. And begins his speech he says that the men and women of the country have been put in harms way for too long and then Iron Maiden arrived and they all thought that those days were behind them. Hammer says that the technology was kept out of their reach and that it wasn't fair.
"He sounds like a whiny little bitch." Peter says and Henry chokes on the air, not expecting that from Peter.
He says that it was an impressive innovation and the press garbled over it. He says that the press is faced with the problem that they're running out of ink. He presents the new face of the United States military and calls it the Hammer Drone. Groups of drones appear on stage. Hammer comments about his presentation being better than Toni's cheerleaders.
"I prefer the cheerleaders." Henry mutters and Wanda looks at him "What was that?"
"Nothing."
Hammer says that no matter how revolutionary the technology is there will always a need for man in war. He introduces Rhodey and says that he is piloting the first variable Threat Response suit prototype.
Rhodey salutes, the drones on stage copy him. Hammer tries to finish his speech but Toni flies in and lands in front of Rhodey and tells him that they have trouble.
Rhodey tells her that there are civilians present and he's there on orders and they shouldn't do this now.
Toni walks over to him and tells him that the civilians are in danger and they need to get them out and she tells Rhodey to trust her for the next few minutes.
Rhodey says he tried trusting her but he got thrown around her house.
Toni and Rhodey wince at the reminder of the fight
Toni says she thinks Hammer is working with Ivan.
Rhodey asks if Ivan's alive.
Toni walks up to Hammer and asks where Ivan is.
Hammer tries to play dumb.
Hammer asks Toni what she's doing there.
Rhodey's gun gets aimed at Toni. Toni asks if its him that's doing that.
Rhodey says it isn't and that he has target lock and can't move and tells her to leave because the system's been compromised.
Toni flies away and says to take it outside. She flies through the roof, the drones and Rhodey start shooting, the glass from the roof starts breaking and falling.
"Holy shit/Jesus!" Lily and James yell
Rhodey starts to fly the drones follow. Toni tells JARVIS that he needs control on Rhodey's suit back.
Rhodey says he has target lock and he follows Toni and the drones are follow him.
Toni asks what he has target lock on.
Rhodey says he has target lock on her and tells Toni he's on her six. They fly by a building, Rhodey shoots out all the glass as he flies by.
The drones that are still on stage start to walk off and out of the building. Hammer walks backstage and asks what's happening. One of the techs says that the software's been overridden. Hammer asks what he means.
"What an idiot."
The tech says that Ivan slaved the drones.
Hammer says its impossible.
"No you're shit sucks."
Hemmer says to call the guards.
Jack tells him that the phones are done.
Hammer says to call their cells.
"God he really is an idiot."
Jack says that those aren't working either.
The tech says that that Ivan locked them out of the mainframe.
Pepper walks in with Natasha and her kids and asks who locked them out of the mainframe. Hammer asks her to go away and he has the situation handled.
"Bullshit." Toni says
Pepper questions him.
Hammer says he has it handled and if Toni never showed up none of this would've happened and tells Pepper to go away.
"Don't blame me, asshole." Toni mutters
He turns to the tech and says they need to get Pepper and Natasha out of there and calls them bitches.
Natasha grabs him and slams him onto the table and tells him to tell her who's behind this.
Hammer says Ivan is.
Natasha asks where he is.
Hammer says he's at the facility.Natasha lets him go and walks away with Nikolai and Anastasia.
Pepper calls the police. Justin walks over to her and tells her not to.
Pepper ignores him and tells the tech to tell her everything he knows.
"Scary."
"Natasha or Pepper?"
"Both."
Toni is still being chased by Rhodey and the drones, Rhodey continues shooting at her. Toni asks JARVIS how they're doing with the suit.
JARVIS says the reboot was unsuccessful.
The drones that were onstage make their way out of the building, they start firing. Ivan watches this from his room, a small smile on his face.
"Maniac." Henry mutters
Natasha and her kids walks out of the building. Happy asks her what's happening.
Natasha tells him to get in the car and take her to Hammer Industries, when he doesn't she asks if he wants her to drive.
Happy says he's driving and tells her to get in the car.
They get in the car and drive away. The drones are still shooting and people are screaming and running. They lock themselves onto the stairs and aim at Toni and start shooting, she dodges and they end up shooting the drones following her. Other drones start shooting at the building. The kid from earlier, with the Iron Maiden helmet is targeted.
"Oh god not the child."
The kid raises his hand, Toni lands beside him and shoots the drone and says the kid did nice work then flies away.
Rhodey says Toni has more drones following her.
Toni says they should take it away from the Expo.
Happy is driving with Natasha in the backseat, she takes her hair down. Natasha says that when they get there he'll have to watch the perimeter and she's going to go in and take down Ivan. She starts getting undressed, Happy looks in the mirror at her she tells him to watch the road.
Toni flies over a road, then under a bridge, the drones are still following her. She flies over some parked cars, a few alarms go off, the drones fly over the cars and more alarms go off. The drones start shooting. Rhodey says that a group is headed back to the Expo.
Rhodey says that he's closing in on Toni and tells him to watch out he starts shooting, destroying a bunch of cars.
Happy pulls up outside Hammer industries, him and Natasha gets out and tells him to stay in the car.
Happy says he wont, asks Natasha what she's wearing and says he won't let them go in alone.
"Don't think you can stop them."
Natasha says that if he wants to help he should keep the car running. Happy opens the door and they walk in.
The security guard tells them that they can't be there. Happy punches him in the face.
Natasha walks past, she throws something and a guard gets electrocuted. Happy is now getting beat up by a security guard. Nikolai and Anastasia say they have the left and right sides of the room and split off from Natasha.
Natasha jumps and knocks another guard out, she slides underneath another and kicks him in his area, another guard comes in Natasha swings her legs around his neck and knocks him out.
