Escape
Bucky woke up to himself when he was taken out of the Ice Box. He remembered everything he had ever done and knew he would break down soon, but right now, he had to get them out of here. They were overconfident. Only three in the room with him. As one began speaking the Command Words from a little book, Bucky casually picked up two of the knives and threw them at the bodyguards then stepped forward to punch the Speaker in the throat. He broke the man's neck, finished getting dressed in his weapons and retrieved his knives. The whole exercise took two minutes tops, and most of it was putting his weapons away.
He confidently stepped into the hall and locked the door behind him. No one would ever think that the Asset could ever be out of containment without permission, so everybody he passed ignored him as if he didnt exist. After making a detour, he went to Harry's cell and using his Bending, consciously for the first time in almost a century, he broke the lock.
Quickly Harry dressed in the uniform that Bucky held out. Bucky made sure a mask and goggles covered Harry's face and handed him the appropriate hardware. While Harry had trouble with the Automatic weapons, he was fine with handguns and the multitude of knives he carried in training. To anyone looking, it would seem like a Hydra agent was accompanying the Asset on a mission.
They simply walked out. It was rather anticlimactic. No gunfights, no explosions. Not even any shouting of “they've escaped!” They simply walked past the checkpoint as if they had the right too. After all, no one in their right mind would interfere with the Winter Soldier when he is on a mission.
They hiked until they crossed a train track and began to walk alongside until a train carrying an open box car began to go past. The two of them jumped on and after the more obvious of their weapons were put into backpacks, Bucky used his Metal Bending to open the plates on his metal arm to find the trackers and the bombs he knew were within. He ended up just removing the arm. It was too difficult to see all the trackers and inbuilt bombs with it still attached and too many were set to explode if tampered with. After a couple of towns had passed, they left the arm in the box car and leapt from the train.
They were being hunted, they knew that, but they were experts in evasive action. Well Bucky was, Harry had never been on an actual mission before, only training simulations. They hid in various ways, mostly by being in plain sight. They were a one armed Soldier travelling with his little brother, a two armed man travelling with his blind son and many more disguises. They stole clothing and a laptop and just kept zigzagging across the USA.
By the time they got to New York, the Stark Expo had just ended and Harry was semi confident that Bucky wouldn’t react to the trigger words. Bucky was very disappointed by the Expo being over and he happily told Harry all about the Stark Expo that he had seen with Steve Rogers in 1943 as they made their way to Stark Tower.
They weren't dressed like investors or inventors so the receptionist gave them a really weird look when they told her they had a meeting with Pepper Potts, but as the names they gave matched the ones on the list, she buzzed them up. It took quite a lot of lying by email to get this meeting set up, but they had information that Tony Stark deserved to know and he was the only one Bucky could think of who might be able to help them with HYDRA.
Miss Potts clearly wasn't expecting a man in his late twenties to early thirties and a teenager, both in black army boots and pants, while wearing hoodies. She wasn't expecting neither to speak, either. Most who manage to book meetings with her try to charm her the moment they come in the door. Not these two. The kid stood with his back to the wall and seemingly watched the door like a hawk from behind his sunglasses while the man simply handed her a USB drive.
She took it hesitantly. “You are not what I expected,” she said as she plugged it into her computer.
“I lied about pretty much everything, we aren't here for business at all. We are here for personal reasons. While I dont think Tony Stark should watch that file and neither should you, Stark deserves to know how his parents died.”
“Why shouldn't I watch it?” she asked warily. “What do you expect me to do with it?”
“It is a video of the murder of Howard and Maria Stark,” he said simply. “My advice would be to have your Head of Security watch it to confirm it is what I say it is, then send it to someone who can ensure it isn't a fake.”
While Tony was still recovering from the failed Expo, she knew this wasn't her call. She typed a message on her computer for JARVIS, Happy Hogan and Tony Stark.
“Why are you bringing this here? What do you hope to gain?”
“I owed Howard Stark more than you could ever know. He is dead so that debt now goes to his son. What I hope to gain is more complicated,” he said in that infuriatingly calm voice he had been using the whole conversation.
She was about to reply when the kid that she forgot was even there said “Incoming, two men. One small side of average, the other larger. And some kind of buzzing,” he said as he tilted his head slightly.
Pepper was shocked. You couldn't see or hear the elevator from her corner office. It was one of the reasons she liked it, she wasn't constantly being interrupted by the ding of the elevator. She was still staring gobsmacked at the boy when Happy entered the room followed by Tony who took one look at the man and blurted “Bucky Barnes?”
“Wasn't sure you would recognise me,” the newly identified Bucky said with a wry smile.
“How could I not? You look the same as you did in the photos, almost seventy years ago!”
“Super Soldier Serum plus cryogenically frozen equals what you see. It's kind of complicated.”
“Super Soldier Serum plus frozen? So it's possible the Captain is still alive under the ice somewhere?” asked Tony, still in shock.
“Added to the fact that he is a Water Bender? Almost certainly.”
“What's with the mini you holding up the wall?”
“That's Harry. It's possible he is my kid but we don't really know. He is mine now anyway. There is no way I will allow HYDRA to take him back,” Bucky said bluntly.
“But HYDRA is gone! Your buddy Cap saw to that when he decided to sink the plane,” Tony said in shock.
“Not gone. Schmidt was only one head of the Hydra. They have infiltrated pretty much everywhere. Before we left, I downloaded quite a lot of information and created backdoors into the rest. They need to be destroyed but I can't do it alone and other than you and the kid, I don't know who to trust with this.”
“What did you mean HYDRA will take him back? Or when you left?” Pepper asked, concerned.
“What I downloaded was primarily my file, his file and a record of all missions they sent me on, while I was their pet brainwashed assassin. I found a file on you too. It held a video of your parents assassination at the hands of the operative known as the Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier Program is why they were experimenting with Super Soldier serum in the first place. There are currently seven trained Winter Soldiers, five of them are insane and uncontrollable. One was never fully Brainwashed and he managed to break the Brainwashing on the seventh.”
“The kid is the unfinished one, you were the brainwashed one that was unbrainwashed,” Tony jumped to the right conclusion. “If there are five uncontrollable, and one not finished being controllable, then it leaves only one Winter Soldier to kill my parents.”
“That's why I'm here. You deserved to know the truth about what happened to them,” Bucky said simply.
“I never cared that Howard was dead. Car crash, murdered. It makes no difference to me. My mother, on the other hand, was innocent in whatever games my father was playing. Intellectually I get that you were a puppet and everything, but it's going to take a lot of time to forgive you for that,” Tony looked like he wanted to both burst into tears and punch Bucky but he settled for pouring himself a glass of alcohol and throwing it back like a shot.
“I'm not here for your forgiveness. I never expected it. To be honest I'm kind of surprised you aren't trying to kill me.”
“Are you a danger to anyone here?” Happy Hogan said when it appeared that his boss wouldn't be able to answer.
“We believe Harry broke my conditioning, but until someone says the trigger words, we won't know if he got it all. HYDRA will be looking for us and may attack because of that. Other than those two instances, the only reason I can see that either of us will be a danger to anyone would be if we were attacked,” Bucky summed up. Harry just nodded.
“Here is what we are going to do. The two of you will stay here in the tower. Not on my floor, I don't think I can handle seeing you everyday yet. The two of you will go to therapy and I will add my parents murder to my own therapy list. We will have a sneaky conversation with the President about you being declared the longest surviving POW. My brain isnt really working right now but if we work on making you both legal citizens then make you public, you will become too visible to touch. HYDRA can't be found out, so no one can touch you. We will need to plan on whether or not you announce HYDRA to the world or let them think they are still hidden. Am I rambling, it seems like I'm rambling?”
Pepper guided Tony back to his seat while Happy poured him another glass.
“Are you sure we should stay here?” It was the first time he had heard the Mini Soldier speak.
“Of course I'm sure! Today has been one for big surprises, is all,” Tony said dismissively.
“Are you really? Your heart is going over one hundred beats a minute. You are definitely not fine,” Harry said, freaking them out. How could he tell Tony's heart beats from across the room?
“That's what the alcohol is for. I have a heart condition, you know,” Tony said a little shakily, still watching the teen warily. Harry still faced the door and didn't look at him.
“Then you should pay more attention to your heart rate. Do you have a pacemaker?” he asked abruptly.
“Why?” Tony asked warily.
“I can hear something humming on your chest. It's odd. I've never heard anything like it before.”
“You can hear that? How? And I don't have a pacemaker, it's an electromagnet keeping shrapnel from my heart.”
“Remove one sense and you learn to use the ones you have remaining. It helps that I'm an Air Bender and can amplify the sound,” the teen said and tilted his head oddly again.
“You're blind!” Tony burst out, shocking Happy and Pepper. “But how can you be trained as a HYDRA assassin, if you're blind?”
“I was eight when my uncle picked up a kitchen knife and slashed it across my face, then threw me out into the streets. I lost my sight and HYDRA found me. They had been watching me since I was conceived apparently. It's why we think I might be Bucky's biological son. They were disappointed that I was blind and they were unable to heal it, but I'm an Air Bender and they decided to see if I could be trained, while they waited for me to grow old enough to start producing little Air Bending assassin babies. They put me in Buckys cell and I saw his Spirit was damaged. I instinctively began to heal it. It took me almost a decade to put him back together. Him remembering both his life before and his skills from HYDRA, is what allowed us to escape,” Harry said matter of factly, not noticing the look of horror on their faces at the idea of him being used as a stud dog.
“Does that mean you have the Super Soldier Serum?” Tony asked curiously.
“Not sure. My training wasn't as rigorous as Buckys for many reasons, the main one is them thinking I'm more helpless then I am. I am not as strong as him but I am faster and he heals quicker. Does that answer your question?”
“Do you mind if I do a DNA test on the both of you?” Tony eagerly asked, his wariness of being in the same room as his mother's killer waning in the face of a new project.
“We've no problem with it. We actually discussed it on the way here. Yes or no, the only thing that will change is that he can legally call me Dad,” Bucky agreed, glad Tony had calmed down a bit.
“Are you like the Great Toph Beifong and see with your Bending? How would that even work for an Air Bender?” Tony asked eagerly.
“Yes and like echolocation. Well echolocation mixed with smells and heat and all sorts of things. I can't read or see colours but I can make a sculpture of you if I need to. And unlike you poor sighted folks, I can see three sixty,” he said with a smirk.
“How did you know Tony and Happy were coming down the hall? The door was closed,” Pepper asked, confused.
“I hadn't let go of the air in the rest of the floor. I could feel them move through it. And the room isnt air tight, I could hear it by the gap under the door.”
