Victor Yuder and Sponsor Duke Peletta
It was extremely rare when Yuder got up before Duke Peletta, but his bones ached and he couldn't remain asleep.
Although everything had healed - from his broken ribs to his crushed limbs and somehow even the eye he had lost in his victory over the giant mutant they now called Pethuamet in his Game - no matter how warm Duke Peletta's always burning magic stove was, they would always ache when the rain came, reminding him of that day, of that battle against that monster that had stolen the lives of all his competitors.
His body had been modified when he was unconscious to erase all the scars - even the scars from his childhood of cutting wood and digging up herbs for money - but some part of him was forever marred by the Games.
...Yuder preferred it that way.
Just as Yuder found the way he received the other Victors' scorn for winning because of the Emperor's brother's sponsorship (even if Yuder had never used a single one of the gifts, having stubbornly ignored them the whole time in remembrance of that flirtatious smile of the Duke when the Duke had visited before the game, and won the entire game with his own ability) fine after considering how all the other tributes had died helplessly against the mutant monster (Yuder didn't actually have to defeat Pethuamet to win. He was the last survivor, but something was just so boiling within him at the time and all he could think of was killing it.)
Just as Yuder now found the way people gossiped and spread rumors that he was part mutant and his blood was as poisonous as Quelochet after having been soaked in Pethuamet's blood fine.
...Just as Yuder also found the way Duke Peletta booked all his nights and used him in bed fine.
Yuder was the last survivor. He won the Game because of his own strength.
He sometimes wondered if he had just stopped being stubborn about refusing the Duke's gifts in the Game, if he could have stopped Pethuamet sooner and saved the others from its wrath.
Then he would remember that it was the Hunger Games. If he had done that, then he would have had to kill them with his own hands to survive anyways.
