The first night

“Alright kiddies,” started the fifth-year male prefect, a boy named Terrence Higgs. “What our dear Head of House didn’t say is, contrary to the rest of the school, we have individual dorms. Your names will be on the door of yours, so you do not get to choose. But they are the same. A bed, a desk, a wardrobe, and a window looking in the lake. If you see some merpeople, don’t be afraid. They are ugly, yes, but they are harmless to you. Don’t go gallivanting in the lake when you are outside, and everything will be fine. Now, it’s time to unpack, and then It’s time to bed for you, kiddies. Chop, chop!”

Rolling her eyes, Titania started walking toward the stairs. She ignored the looks from the blond prat and didn’t see the brunette girl -hanging at his arm- expressions of pure distaste. She descended into the heart of the dungeons, noticing the golden plate indicating which years had their dorms there.

Despite behind so deep in the dungeons, the temperature stayed pleasantly cool. Not to cold, not too hot. She guessed it must have been the works of some charms embedded in the construction of the castle. It was pretty cool. She would not freeze in winter, and she would not suffocate in summer. It seemed that there was no humidity either and she found herself glad about it. Her hair was unmanageable on a good day, she dreaded to know how bad it would be with humidity seeping in the atmosphere.

Finally reaching the first-year landing, the muggleborn girl was searching for the door with her name. She found it between Tracy Davis and Daphnée Greengrass. The gold letters on the dark wood were scintillating in the candlelight.

Inside, as the prefect said, there was a bed, a desk, a wardrobe and a window. But there was another door too, leading to an ensuite bathroom. She was giddy. She would not have to transport her toiletries every time. Coming back in the room, she saw her trunk at the base of the four-poster bed. The heavy drapes were open, and in a shade of deep forest green with silver borders. Focusing on her trunk, she opened it and started to unpack.

Books were going in the shelves near the desks, parchments and quills on the desk, her muggle notebooks were going on the drawers of the desk, and her muggle office supplies were proudly displayed on the desk.

Clothes were going on the wardrobe, with the muggle jeans, skirts, jerseys and jumpers neatly folded, and the robes hanging. Her shoes were at the bottom of the wardrobe, shining nicely. Finally, her toiletries were going in the bathroom. And she was all set. She even contemplated taking a bath tonight when the door to her room opened suddenly.

“Mudblood,” sneered the brunette whose name was probably Parkinson.
“Pug-face,” she replied evenly, arching an eyebrow.
“You are not welcome in Slytherin. Professor Snape is just forced to enforce the school regulations, so do not think he is on your side.”
“And you are not welcome in my room, so get the hell out of here before I give you a black eye.”

The two girls stared at each other with clear enmity, before a blond one cleared her throat.

“Time to go, Pansy. It is near nine already. You do not want our Head of House berating you already, right?”

The pug-faced girl sneered at Titania, before getting out of the room.

“You’re right, Daphne. Come, we do not need such a hideous show before bed.”

Sighing, Titania closed her door shut behind them. No bath tonight. She has some research to do on how to protect her room.
