Back to Hogwarts

Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia hated a lot of things. Harry believed they hated more things than they loved. Being one of the things his aunt and uncle hated had never bothered Harry. Eventually he became curious about the other issues they hated.

Harry knew he was different that his family because of magic but began to realize it was more than that. He had a crush on Cho Chang his fourth year and now was still infatuated with her going into his fifth year. He felt remorse though for Cedrics death and felt as if he was not honoring him by having feelings for his paramour. Seeing Draco getting off the train on September 1st made Harry confused. He recognized, while on the cart up to the castle, that the stirring in him about Draco felt very similar to how he felt about Cho.

Harry wasn’t afraid of the thought of finding he understood his emotions about Draco because this was another one of the concepts his aunt and uncle hated. Infatuation or love between homosexuals. What truly threw Harry was the fact that he had feelings for both Cho and Draco. He needed to talk to Ron and Hermoine alone as soon as possible. Harry knew Charlie Weasley was gay and that it was never an issue with the Weasley family. It was just a part of Charlie in the same way he worked with Dragons.

While they were seated in the cart after meeting Luna Lovegood Harry stayed silent and sifted through his thoughts. What did it mean that he found Draco attractive? Shouldn’t he hate Draco? In some ways he does hate Draco. He’s been his nemesis since first year. His father was a death eater. His father was there in the graveyard after Voldemort came back into his body. Was Draco just as bad as his father? Would he one day take the mark the same way? Whereas Cho was a sweet girl, unproblematic, soft spoken, a great athlete and a caring person. Draco was abrasive, a bully, outspoken, he had called Harrys friends rude names. Harry felt a little angry with himself for enamorous attitude toward Draco.

“I have to talk to you both after dinner, it’s important, I think.” Harry had whispered to his best friends at the Gryffindor table. Immediately Hermoine was on edge, they had only just gotten to the castle, and she was with him on the train and in the carriage. Ron was continuing to eat his fill of food, this was just another day with Harry. Being Harry’s friend meant there was never a dull moment.

After an extremely inaccurate statement from a very puffy woman with a pig face claiming she was from the ministry and watching the first years get picked for their houses, the trio finally headed to the common room with the rest of the Gryffindors. Hermoine spoke up once they were in a mostly secluded spot and cast a muffliato “Ok Harry, what's going on?”

“I'm not too sure myself to be honest” Harry turned his head a bit and looked away from the two people he trusted the most in his life. “I know Charlie is gay and all but is it possible to be gay and straight at the same time? I'm just so confused I know I like Cho still, but I think I might like a guy too, but that’s not possible, is it?”

Ron put his hand on Harry's shoulder and had a small laugh to himself. “Mate, of course you can like both at the same time. It's perfectly normal. Of course when it comes to normal you’re always an outlier” Harry shoved Ron away a bit but breathed a sigh of relief. “Look, liking a guy isn’t the end of the world.”

“It’s called being bisexual Harry,” Hermoine interjected. “it’s actually quite common.”

“Well that’s a relief,” Harry looked his friends in the eyes with admiration and a feeling of belonging.

“So,” began Ron, “speaking of Cho, are you going to try to reignite that spark this year or do you think it’s too soon after what happened?”

“I think it might be too soon. I mean half the people in this room don’t believe what happened to me in that graveyard and still blame me for Cedrics death. How can I even begin to try to pursue Cho without bringing her into this mess.” Harry blew out a breath. Feeling more confident than he did at the start of their conversation. “I just want to be like every other teenager for once.”

“Oh, Harry, I’m sure it won’t always be this way. People will see Voldemort has returned and you will be able to lead a normal life, eventually.” Hermoine reassured Harry.

“Yeah, fat chance with that pig woman from the ministry being here” Harry retorted reminding them of the choice words the woman had said at the welcoming feast.

“Let’s go to bed and figure all of that out tomorrow. Harry, mate, you know we are here for you. We’re your best friends and we won’t let anyone badger you.” Ron stated trying to settle what was sure to become more than he could handle on a full stomach and after an already emotional conversation.

“Yeah let’s leave it for the morning, good idea Ron.” Harry agreed.

“Wait Harry,” Hermoine began after the boys started toward their dormitory, “did you want to tell us who this boy is you fancy?”

“Sure, I mean if you really want to know”

“Yeah mate, who is it?” Ron was eager to know.

“Um, so, I'm not sure why but when we got off the train I noticed how fit, um, Draco Malfoy was and I-”

“Malfoy?!” Ron exclaimed! He face becoming close to the color of his hair.

“Ronald! You stop that right now!” Hermoine batted Ron’s arm before he could begin a tangent. Turning to Harry she said “Harry, you and Malfoy have a very volatile relationship and I can absolutely see how those emotions could confuse you.”

“Thanks Hermoine, this is extremely confusing. Let’s leave it for breakfast. Thanks for supporting me,” Harry turned to Ron, “both of you.” Ron nodded his head and turned, walking upstairs without another word to both of them.

“I’ll see you in the morning Harry.” Hermoine gave her friend a hug and walked towards her own dormitory. Leaving Harry to scratch the back of his head and follow after Ron to try to get some semblance of sleep after all the confusing emotions of the day.
