James Potter was 6 years old when he met Bartemius Crouch Jr. for the first time, or as the younger boy preferred, Barty.
They had met because James's father, Fleamont Potter, a very well respected pureblood wizard, married to a very respected pureblood witch (James's mother, Euphemia), was doing work with the Ministry of Magic at the time. Fleamont had taken James to work with him that day as his mother wanted a day to go out with her friends.
James met Barty when the other boys paper airplane crashed right into James's head.
"Whoops! Sorry! I was trying to fly it with wandless magic but it went out of control." He bent down to pick up the airplane than shook James's hand. "Bartemius Crouch Jr. son of Bartemius Crouch Sr." He shook James's hand ecstatically, "my father works for the ministry." James nodded at the boy.
He was slightly taller than James, had white skin, seemingly tanned from days out in the sun, light grey eyes that could be caught as green when the light shifted, and had scruffy sandy brown hair. The boy had the most wild smile James had ever seen on a person.
"Pleased to meet you. I'm James Potter. That man there, is my father Fleamont Potter." he pointed proudly at the man, very pleased with his family. James gazed down at Barty's shoes for a second, marveling at the look of them. "Your shoes are amazing!"
"Thank you, my mother got me them for my birthday!" Barty said with a smile. The two boys talked about their shoes for the next moment until Fleamont walked up with a new man.
"Hello James! I see you've made a friend." Fleamont said in his deep jolly voice. James smiled brightly at his father then turned back to Barty, about to say something when the man spoke up.
"This is my son, Fleamont. Bartemius Jr. Say hello Bartemius." James noticed Barty's cheshire grin had been wiped from his face as his father placed a hand on his shoulder. Barty held out his hand politely to Fleamont.
"What a nice young man. This is my son James. James say hi to Bart here."
"Hello." James said, slightly put off by the man.
Barty was the spitting image of Bart Sr. the same light brown hair, the same eyes, the same skin, and now that Barty wasn't smiling, they wore the same expression. No smiles coming from the pair, lips pressed thin, heads tilted up, eyelids low as if they were predators examining prey, James had a feeling he didn't want to be the prey.
"It seems our boys get along well. How about Bartemius comes over on Monday to play with James? It would give you and the Mrs. a break and me and Effie wouldn't mind another kid being around for a couple hours, James has friends over quite often." James smiled wildly at Barty who managed to smile back despite the lingering of his father's hand on his shoulder.
"Monday would work nicely, you live around Windsor, correct?" Bart asked, haughty in his voice as if he didn't approve where the Potters lived.
"Yes, it's a Windsor address but quite out of the way of any muggles and Effie put a charm on the house to only be visible to magical folk. A pro of having a genius wife." Fleamont reassured Bart about the muggles thing, James assumed that Mr. Crouch was one of the wizards who disliked common muggles and preferred to stay away from them, likely lived in a wizards town like Godric's Hollow. James stepped away from the adults with Barty as Fleamont handed a note with the Potters address over to Mr. Crouch and the two adults continued talking.

The two boys play date that Monday worked out so well that Barty came over nearly every Monday, or every day that matter, for almost 5 years.
In those 5 years James had learned that Barty was a person of recklessness, but also was incredibly smart. The boy could be scheming one minute and solving a complex muggle equation the next, or doing wandless magic, which he either used for his schemes or to preform a complicated potion. Barty was also a couple younger than James, making him 5 when they met and a grade below him. The boy also hated to be called Bartemius or Bart, it made him sound to much like his father for his (or James's) liking. The boy dreamed to be in Ravenclaw or Slytherin, while James himself dreamed to be in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, but he was leaning more towards Gryffindor as that was his father's house, although his mother was a Slytherin.
James saw Barty constantly for 5 years and then suddenly it stopped. James had gone off to Hogwarts. Barty had come to visit him on Platform 9 3/4. The two hugged goodbye intensely. Barty had actually been allowed to hug him today and not seen as week which James was very thankful for, as Barty's mom had taken him to the platform and she was always a much nicer person than Barty's father.
"You have to send me letters, it's ok if you're busy but at least once a month, I need to hear about Hogwarts!" Barty reminded James with tears in his eyes as if Barty hadn't been saying that all Summer.
"I will Bar." James said into the hug before letting go and hopping onto the train. He waved his parents and Barty goodbye, all three of them were crying, he even waved Mrs. Crouch goodbye as she stood behind Barty. He then left the window and caught up to his two other friends he'd known since he was practically born, Marlene McKinnon and Peter Pettigrew and they were off. They found a compartment with another boy inside of it. The boy had long black hair and a grin. James could tell he was going to like him.
James had a feeling this was going to be an amazing year.

That night he was sorted into Gryffindor along with the boy from the train, Sirius Black, Marlene, and Peter, and a few other people he'd met that day.
When he got to his dorm later on the first thing he did was pull out a quill and paper and send a letter off to Barty, telling the younger about how he had a feeling Hogwarts was going to be wonderful and how he couldn't wait for Barty to get their too.

The next year Barty came to Hogwarts. Ending up in Slytherin, which James didn't have a problem with, like he said, his mother was a Slytherin, but his best friend Sirius had a problem with Slytherins, especially with the fact that his younger brother, Regulus, was a Slytherin. Sirius was a Black, the most pureblooded family of them all, and they had all been in Slytherin, except for Sirius. Sirius firmly believed that his brother would be in Gryffindor too but was completely shocked and betrayed when he wasn't. This caused Sirius to tell James that from that point forward they weren't going to be friends with any Slytherins, especially ones that hung out with his brother.
Unluckily for James, and because he would do anything for Sirius, and there was nothing he could do to talk Sirius out of this, and because Barty had become friends with Regulus, James had to stop talking to Barty. Completely, all James did was send a Christmas card once a year and they didn't talk past that. That is how he left things with Barty, and why he thought he would never talk to Barty again. Until potions class in 5th year.
