you’re nothing more than his wife

“You ready, Caitlyn?” Mel asked as she opened the door of the bridal suite. “Oh, my love, you look stunning.”

I sighed and smiled at her. “Yeah, I’m ready.”

She gazed at me with a knowing look, “I know this is probably not what you wanted… but it’s the right choice, yeah?”

“No… no.” I faintly smiled, “I—I wanted this. I want this. I need this.”

“How about him? Is he the one you need? You want?” She said with a concerned look on her face.

“Don’t say that, Mel,” I said firmly. I looked back at the mirror and stared at my reflection, still seeing Mel at the corner of the mirror. “I made this decision. I want it, him. I’ve wanted this life. I chose it.”

I see her sigh then nodded. “Okay, love. I’m sorry,” She says as she walks towards me, she gazed at me once again and smiled, genuinely, and said, “You’re so beautiful.”

“Thank you.” I said, holding back my tears as much as she does. She held my hand and squeezed it.

As she was about to say something, the door opened once again as my mother enters.

“Could you give us some time alone, Mel, please?”

“Of course,” Mel smiled to my mother and then looked back at me, “I love you, I’ll see you later.” I waved my hand and glanced at her as she closed the door.

I gave my mother a look as she’s looking at me, smiling. “You’re gorgeous, darling.”

“Thank you, Mother.” I answered and walked towards her. She then run her hand through my dress and my hair, as if she’s trying to fix it.

“You look perfect,” She said again. I giggled at the fact that for the first time ever in her life she’s speechless. “I don’t know what to say.”

I chuckled. “I’m happy you’re happy, Mother.”

Her smile fades a little, as if her defenses were broken for a little while, she cupped my cheek as she gathers herself and asked, “Are you?”

“Am I what?” I asked confusingly.

“Happy. Are you happy, Caity?”

“Of course I am.”

She smiled again and gestured at the vanity, I sat back down as she remained standing while she touches up my hair. She took a hairpin from her pocket and showed it to me.

“This could be your something old. It’s from your great-grandmother. She wore it at her wedding.”

She put the hairpin on the side of my hair, it sits there decoratively and shining beautifully. “It looks wonderful on you.”

She continued on touching up my hair and kept on saying how beautiful and perfect I look right now.

“Have your Father gave you your something new yet?” She asked as she finally finishes my hair.

“Yes. It’s this bracelet. Have you shown him the hairpin? They perfectly match each other.” They do. They both have gold detailing and pearl features with hints of blue stones.

“Ah, no. Maybe we just both know what our daughter likes,” She smiled and rested a hand on my shoulder. “I’m so proud of you. And happy for you. Your father and I both are.”

I hold back my tears once again, and said, “I know, Mother. Thank you… for everything.”

“I know the last couple of years have been hard for you, but I’m so proud of you. For doing the right choice. For doing this.

My lips tightened as I try to smile to that. “Thank you, Mother,” I just looked at her and smiled again. Completely defenseless to this type of situation. I could see she’s happy with this and relieved that we got out of that situation we were in. That I got out of the situation I was in. I cleared my throat and said, “Could you fetch me Jayce, Mother? He still has my something blue. I’ll see you later in the ceremony.”

“Okay, darling. I’ll see you later.”

I watched her go out of the room, and the moment she did, I let out an exasperated sigh. I turned my head back to the mirror and gazed upon my reflection.

I see my something new, my something old. For some reason, I see her. No. Nope.

I shrugged it off. I processed everything in my brain. I’m getting married today. To the man that I… love? Yeah. To the man that I love. Definitely.

It was the right choice. I’m doing this because he’s the right choice. A Piltovian prince whatnot.

He’s amazing, he’s kind, my family and friends love him, why wouldn’t I? And I’ve wanted him for years! Even before she came. Before her, we were fine and happy and everything. It’s something that she couldn’t understand. That this is just the way I am. This is not an excuse or a stupid reason. I love him. I want to marry him.

I cannot wait to be his wife.

After this day, I will quit my job and run our home. It’s nice. I’ll just be his wife. From this day forward, I’m nothing more than his wife.

Before I completely spiral, I heard a faint knock on my door. Jayce.

“Hey, Sprout.,” He said as he enters the room with a big smile on his face, “You excited? It’s your big day! Well, your second one. The first one being your debutante ball with your big blue gown.”

“You know, shut up,” I said and we both laughed. “You have got to forget that debutante ball.”

“Never,” he said and laughed again. “Seriously, are you excited?”

I let out a sigh again. God, how many sighs can you let out on your wedding day? I seem to be letting out a lot.

“Yeah… yeah, I’m excited. Just a little nervous, I guess.” I said as I fidgeted with the bracelet my father gave me. Jayce seems to get the hint that I want to talk about something else than my excitement on my wedding day.

“I heard Mel gave you your something borrowed yesterday. What did you borrow?”

I smiled and gathered the ends of my dress to one side and stick out one of my foot, “Her shoes! The shoes I’ve always wanted to borrow from her but she won’t let me because it’s ‘limited edition’ and it’s special and whatever. She finally let me borrow it! She did say I better take care of it or my wedding would not only be the happiest day of my life but also the last,” I said while laughing through my last sentences. Jayce let out some laughs too.

“Well, you better take care of it. You know she meant that.” He answered and laughed more. Jayce is my best friend and I’m just so glad he’s here.

“Yeah, I know. I remember the first time I wanted to borrow it, she screamed at me for 30 minutes straight and I barely touched it! Imagine the anger and horror in her face when she caught me sneaking it out for my date with—“

Oh, fuck.

Jayce stopped giggling and so do I. I cleared my throat and gathered myself, “Well, you remember the story.” I said and forced a smile.

“Yeah. I remember the story, Cait,” he said and let out a sigh. How many times can people let out an exasperated sigh on a wedding? “Anyway, I’m here for your something blue.”

He stood up from the chair and then started fumbling with his pockets, looking for my something blue. “I genuinely didn’t know you needed one because your hair is already blue and I know your mom and dad are going to give you something with blue, and I don’t know the criteria, do I buy you one? Do I just get something or whatever? I was genuinely considering just giving you a hextech gem,” we laughed at that last sentence.

“And Mel was no help. She said, ‘How should I know? All I know is she’s probably going to borrow my goddamn shoes,’ and well, she was right,” I just kept on looking at him as he holds the box in his hands, as if he’s nervous to give it to me. Which I don’t understand why. “Maybe you don’t need a something blue?”

I rolled my eyes and irritably answered, “Jayce, just give it to me.”

He sighed and said, “Its blue is a little faint, but I believe it is blue. I asked for help.”

I took the box from his hands and smiled at him, “Thank you.” He scratched his head, still quite nervous. And I’m still not understanding why.

I shrugged my confusion out of my mind, smiled at him, and opened the box.

It’s a choker. It has two bands, the band is made with a brown leather-like material, the upper band has two gold strips, one on each side, and the middle is a gold charm with a faint blue gem in the middle.

I stared at it.

With shock, awe, pain, happiness?

I stared at it. I didn’t even notice the tears uncontrollably running down my cheeks.

I stared at it.

It’s either Jayce is really dumb or he did this on purpose. His nervousness earlier suggests that he did this on purpose, though.

I picked it up and turned it around.

Suddenly Jayce’s voice echoed in my head, I asked for help.

On the back, it shows engraved letters. Tears continued to run down on her face and she thought, Jayce did this on purpose and he is also really dumb.

I ran my fingers through the engraved letters,

Violet.
