James
James and Lily were setting up for Halloween. It had been Harry’s first Halloween and they were excited to spend it with him. They were hoping for a nice peaceful time away from the war and grief. Lily had just gone up to place Harry to bed and James was sitting downstairs setting up a scary movie for him and his wife when he heard a knock on the door. Neither of them were expecting anyone since only two people knew of their location, both of which would never arrive unannounced and would use the floo network instead of the door. He grew suspicious reaching for his wand.
“James?” He heard the voice and his worries melted away. It was Peter, his childhood friend and the secret keeper; he trusted this man with his family’s life. He put his wand down and made his way over to the door unlocking and opening it widely with a smile.
“Peter, I wasn’t expecting you. You gave me quite the fright” He laughed, stepping aside and letting him in “what brings you here at this hour?”
“Oh well I just wanted to check up on you. There’s rumors going around about a mole in the order” Peter laughed nervously looking around “Are Lily and Harry home?”
“Yes I have also heard the rumors but we needn’t worry as no one knows of our location besides you and Dumbledoor” James notices Peter’s wand is in hand and eyes his own getting a bit nervous. He felt something was wrong as if this wasn’t the same Peter he knew as a kid. The same timid, clumsy, shy Peter he had grown so fond of. “Yes Lily and Harry are home. Why do you ask?”
“Oh you know just making sure” Peter eyes the door and James notices he had forgotten to shut and lock it. There’s a figure standing outside before taking a step into the house “You know James” Peter draws out the words and James keeps his eyes fixed on the figure fear growing “your fright was very warranted” Peter chuckles drawing his wand.
James works entirely on adrenaline making a beeline for his wand but is blocked by Peter who is smiling coldly at him. James had never seen such an expression on his face before and for a second time froze. All that existed in this moment was him, Peter, this odd man walking slowly across his house and his wife and son upstairs. In his mind it was clear what his last moments would be. He would not beg or plead for his life. He would not demand an answer for Peter’s betrayal or to who this man is. No, he would spend them fighting harder than he has ever fought in his life. He would protect his family from these monsters and if he were to die in the process he would accept it.
