Birthday Party

The morning sun cast a gentle light through the windows of the Granger-Snape household, but the tension muted the usual warmth. Hermione was in the bedroom, packing her suitcase for the week-long team-building retreat. Despite his disapproval, Severus stood nearby, silently assisting her by folding clothes and handing her the items she needed. The atmosphere was heavy with unspoken words and lingering frustration.

In the living room, Septimus played quietly with his toys, his usual exuberance dampened by the impending departure of his mother. He had heard the conversations, the disagreements, and the hurt in his parents' voices. Even at nearly four years old, he understood that something important was happening.

Hermione put the last of her clothes in the suitcase and shut it down. She turned to Severus, who was holding one of her scarves; his expression conflicted. "Thank you for helping me," she said softly, her voice laced with gratitude and sadness.

Severus nodded, handing her the scarf. "I disagree with this, Hermione. But I understand why you feel you must go."

Hermione took the scarf, her fingers brushing against his. "I hate that I'm missing Septimus's birthday. I really do."

Severus sighed, his shoulders sagging slightly. "Just... come back as soon as you can. He needs you. We both do."

Before Hermione could respond, Septimus appeared in the doorway, clutching his favorite stuffed dragon. His eyes were wide and shiny, betraying the emotions he was trying so hard to hide. "Mummy, are you leaving now?"

Hermione's heart ached at the sight of her son. She knelt down, opening her arms to him. "Yes, sweetheart. I have to go for a little while. But I'll be back before you know it."

Septimus ran into her embrace, burying his face in her shoulder. "I'll miss you, Mummy."

"I'll miss you too, Septimus," Hermione whispered, holding him tightly. "But Daddy will be here with you, and you'll have so much fun together."

Severus watched the scene, his heart heavy with sadness and frustration. He stepped forward, placing a hand on Septimus's back. "We'll celebrate your birthday properly when your mother returns. And we'll find ways to have fun while she's away, won't we, Septimus?"

Septimus nodded, his small body trembling slightly. "Okay, Daddy. But I still wish Mummy could be here."

Hermione pulled back slightly, cupping her son's face in her hands. "I wish I could be here too, love. But I promise we'll have a special celebration when I return. I'll bring you a present, and we'll do everything you love."

Septimus tried to smile, but it wavered, revealing the depth of his sadness. "Will you really come back soon, Mummy?"

"Yes, I will," Hermione said firmly, kissing his forehead. "And I'll think about you every single day."

Severus cleared his throat, feeling the need to shift the mood before it became too heavy. "Why don't we help Mummy carry her things to the door, Septimus?"

Septimus nodded, sniffling a little as he wiped his eyes. He grabbed one of Hermione's bags, struggling slightly with its weight. Severus quickly intervened, lifting it with ease. "I've got it, my boy. You can help by holding the door open."

Together, they made their way to the front door, the atmosphere thick with the impending goodbye. Hermione took a deep breath, trying to hold back her own tears. She knelt down one last time, hugging Septimus tightly. "Be good for Daddy, okay? And remember, I love you so much."

"I love you too, Mummy," Septimus whispered, clinging to her.

Finally, Hermione stood up, her eyes meeting Severus's. There was a silent understanding, a truce of sorts, even if it was temporary. "Take care of him," she said softly.

Severus nodded, his expression serious. "Always."

With one last lingering look at her family, Hermione stepped outside, the cool morning air hitting her face. She turned back, waving to Septimus. "I'll see you soon, my little professor."

Septimus waved back, his small hand trembling slightly. "Bye, Mummy. Come back soon!"

Severus placed a comforting hand on Septimus's shoulder as they watched Hermione walk down the path, her figure growing smaller with each step. "She'll be back before you know it, Septimus. And we'll have a grand celebration when she does."

Septimus nodded, trying to be brave. "Okay, Daddy. I'll be good."

Severus crouched down, looking his son in the eye. "I know you will. And we'll have some fun together, just you and me."

A small smile broke through Septimus's sadness. "Can we make potions like you do at Hogwarts?"

Severus chuckled softly, ruffling his son's hair. "Absolutely. We'll make the best potions and maybe even a few special ones for your birthday."

Severus felt a mixture of pride and sorrow as they walked back inside. He knew the week ahead would be challenging, but he was determined to make it as smooth as possible for Septimus. They would get through it together, and their family would be whole again when Hermione returned.

The rhythmic clattering of the train on the tracks filled the compartment with a steady, almost hypnotic sound. Hermione sat by the window, staring at the passing countryside but seeing little of it. Her mind was far away, back at home with Severus and Septimus. The guilt of missing her son's fourth birthday weighed heavily on her, and she couldn't shake the image of his sad eyes as she said goodbye that morning.

Across from her, Harry sat slumped in his seat, a similar weight pressing down on him. His hands were clasped together, fingers interlaced, staring intently at them. The news of Ginny's first maternity checkup was a joyous occasion, but the fact that he would miss it to attend this mandatory team-building retreat left him with a gnawing sense of regret.

"How are you holding up?" Harry finally asked, breaking the silence that had enveloped them since they boarded the train.

Hermione turned away from the window, her eyes reflecting the turmoil within. "I'm trying to stay positive, but it's hard. Septimus was so upset this morning, and I hate that I will miss his birthday."

Harry nodded, understanding all too well. "I know what you mean. Ginny was really looking forward to me being there for her first checkup. It's our first child, and I should be there for her."

The shared burden of their sacrifices created a bond of empathy between them. They understood the demands and expectations of their roles as Aurors, but that didn't make the personal sacrifices any easier to bear.

"I can't stop thinking about how Severus and Septimus will manage without me," Hermione admitted, her voice tinged with anxiety. "Severus is trying to be supportive, but I know he's struggling with me being away."

Harry sighed, leaning back in his seat. "It's the same with Ginny. She's so strong, but I can tell she's disappointed. This retreat is supposed to build team cohesion, but it feels like pulling us away from our families when they need us the most."

Hermione nodded, feeling the weight of his words. "Sometimes I wonder if we're making the right choices. The work we do is important, but at what cost?"

Harry looked at her with a sad smile. "We're doing the best we can, Hermione. It's a tough balance, but we're trying to protect our loved ones by doing this job. I just wish the Ministry understood the sacrifices we make."

Hermione reached out, placing a hand on Harry's arm. "We're in this together, Harry. We'll get through this week, and then we'll make it up to our families. We always do."

Harry gave her a grateful nod. "Thanks, Hermione. It helps to know I'm not alone in feeling this way."

They sat in companionable silence, each lost in their thoughts. The train chugged along, carrying them further away from their families and into the unknown demands of the retreat. The familiar scenery of the countryside gave way to denser forests, the trees casting fleeting shadows across the compartment.

Hermione reached into her bag and pulled a photograph of Severus and Septimus. In the picture, Severus was smiling—a rare, genuine smile—while Septimus sat on his lap, beaming with joy. The sight brought a lump to her throat, and she had to blink back tears.

Harry noticed the photograph and leaned in to take a look. "That's a great picture," he said softly. "You can see how much they both love you."

Hermione nodded, tracing the outline of her son's face with her finger. "They mean everything to me. I just hope Septimus understands why I have to be away."

"He will," Harry assured her. "He's a smart kid. And Severus will ensure he knows how much you love him, even when you're not there."

Hermione managed a small smile. "Thanks, Harry. I know you're right. I just wish this didn't feel so wrong."

Harry gave her a sympathetic look. "We all make sacrifices for the greater good, but it doesn't mean we must like it. We'll be back with our families soon, and then we can focus on making it up to them."

The train lurched slightly as it rounded a bend, and Hermione put the photograph back in her bag. "I guess we should try to make the best of this retreat," she said, trying to muster some enthusiasm. "Maybe we can actually learn something useful."

Harry chuckled softly. "Maybe. Or maybe we'll just end up more frustrated by the end."

They both laughed, the moment of levity easing some of the tension. The conversation turned to lighter topics, memories of their time at Hogwarts and the antics they got up to with Ron. It was a welcome distraction from the heavy thoughts plaguing them.

Eventually, the landscape outside began to change, signaling they were nearing their destination. Hermione looked out the window, feeling a mix of resignation and resolve. "Here we go," she said, more to herself than to Harry.

Harry nodded, his expression determined. "Let's get this over with and get back home."

They stood up, gathering their belongings and preparing to disembark. As the train pulled into the station, Hermione took one last deep breath, steeling herself for the week ahead. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she also knew she had the strength to get through it—for Severus, Septimus, and herself.

-----

The day of Septimus's fourth birthday dawned bright and clear, the morning sun casting a warm, golden glow over the Granger-Snape household. Severus was up early, ensuring every detail of the party was perfect. Despite the lingering sadness from Hermione's absence, he was determined to make this day special for Septimus.

The living room was transformed with colorful balloons and streamers, and a large banner that read "Happy 4th Birthday, Septimus!" hung prominently on the wall. A small table was set with various snacks and a beautifully decorated cake featuring a miniature Hogwarts castle.

Septimus woke up with excitement bubbling over. His eyes widened in delight as he saw the decorations. "Daddy, it looks amazing!" he exclaimed, bouncing on his toes.

Severus smiled, ruffling his son's hair. "I'm glad you like it. We have some special guests coming today."

As the morning progressed, the first guests began to arrive. Luna Lovegood, with her dreamy expression and a gift wrapped in sparkling paper, was among the first. "Happy birthday, Septimus," she said, handing him the gift. "I brought you something magical."

Septimus's eyes lit up as he took the present. "Thank you, Auntie Luna!"

Ginny Potter arrived next, carrying a large, colorful box. Beside her was Teddy Lupin, holding his grandmother Andromeda's hand. "Happy birthday, Septimus!" Ginny called, bending down to hug him. "We brought you something special."

Teddy grinned, his hair shifting colors with excitement. "You're going to love it, Septimus!"

Neville Longbottom was close behind, carrying a small potted plant with unusual, glowing flowers. "Happy birthday, Septimus," he said warmly. "This is a magical plant. It's very special."

Septimus's face was a picture of joy as he thanked each guest. "Thank you, Uncle Neville! It's beautiful!"

Draco Malfoy arrived with his usual composed demeanor, a small smile playing on his lips as he handed Septimus a neatly wrapped gift. "Happy birthday, Septimus. This is from Scorpius and me."

Hermione's parents, Daniel and Jean Granger, arrived last. They greeted Septimus with warm hugs and a stack of storybooks. "Happy birthday, sweetheart," Jean said, kissing his cheek. "We've missed you."

With all the guests gathered, the party kicked off in earnest. Luna led a game of "Pin the Tail on the Kneazel," Ginny organized a treasure hunt in the garden, with small prizes hidden in clever spots. The children's laughter filled the air, and Severus felt a sense of peace watching his son enjoy himself for a while.

At lunchtime, everyone gathered around the table for a meal. Severus had prepared Septimus's favorite dishes, and the spread was impressive. The chatter and laughter continued as they sat down to eat, the atmosphere warm and familial.

Seated between Severus and his grandmother Jean, Septimus seemed to radiate happiness despite the absence of his mother. But a momentary shadow crossed his face as the cake was brought out. He looked around the room, clearly missing Hermione.

Severus noticed and leaned in close. "She's thinking about you right now, Septimus. And she'll be back soon. We'll celebrate again when she's home."

Septimus nodded, a brave smile returning to his face. "I know, Daddy. I just miss her."

The air was excited as everyone gathered around the birthday cake, a beautiful creation shaped like a miniature Hogwarts castle, complete with turrets and tiny, glowing candles. Septimus stood at the center of the gathering, his eyes wide with anticipation. Severus was by his side, a proud smile on his face, though there was a hint of sadness in his eyes as he knew how much Septimus missed Hermione.

Ginny, Luna, Neville, Draco, Teddy, Andromeda, and Hermione's parents formed a circle around the table. Ginny held Teddy's hand, her eyes sparkling with joy, while Draco had a rare look of genuine happiness as he watched his godson.

"Alright, everyone, let's start!" called out Ginny.

The group began to sing, their voices blending together in a harmonious chorus:

"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday, dear Septimus,
Happy birthday to you!"

Septimus looked at the flickering candles, his small face glowing. He closed his eyes tightly and made a wish. He wished for just one thing in his heart: "I wish Mummy would come home today."

He blew out the candles, and the room erupted in cheers and applause. Severus leaned down and hugged his son. "Good job, Septimus."

But just as the candles flickered out, there was a sound at the front door. It creaked open, and everyone turned to see who it could be. Hermione stood in the doorway, with Harry beside her, carrying their bags from the team-building event. The room fell silent momentarily, the surprise hanging in the air like a palpable force.

"Mummy!" Septimus shouted, his face lighting up with pure joy. He broke free from Severus's grasp and ran towards Hermione, his little arms outstretched.

Hermione dropped her bag and knelt down, touching her son tightly. Tears filled her eyes as she held him close. "Happy birthday, my darling boy," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

Severus watched the scene unfold, his heart swelling with relief and happiness. He walked over to Hermione, his own emotions barely contained. "You made it," he said quietly, his voice filled with gratitude.

Hermione looked up at him, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I couldn't miss his birthday, Severus. I had to be here."

Harry, standing in the doorway, smiled warmly at the reunion. Ginny walked over to him, hugging him tightly. "I'm so glad you're back," she whispered. "You made it just in time."

"Of course," Harry replied, hugging her back. "I wouldn't miss this, and I want to be there for you too."

Still clinging to Hermione, Septimus looked up at her with wide, adoring eyes. "I wished for you, Mummy. And you came!"

Hermione kissed his forehead, her heart overflowing with love. "I heard your wish, sweetheart. And I couldn't wait to see you."

The guests, momentarily stunned by the surprise, began to cheer and clap, celebrating the unexpected but joyous arrival. Ginny led a chorus of cheers, and Teddy, his hair a bright blue with excitement, clapped enthusiastically.

Neville, smiling broadly, said, "Looks like the party just got even better."

Draco, with a rare grin, added, "Indeed. Welcome back, Hermione, Harry."

Hermione's parents, Daniel and Jean, walked over, hugging their daughter tightly. "We're so glad you're here," Jean said, her voice filled with emotion.

Daniel nodded a proud smile on his face. "You made it just in time."

Feeling the moment's warmth, Severus placed a hand on Hermione's shoulder. "Thank you for coming back," he said softly.

Hermione stood up, holding Septimus in her arms, and looked at Severus. "I couldn't stay away. Not today."

Severus nodded, his eyes meeting hers with a deep understanding. "He wished for you," he said simply.

Hermione's eyes filled with tears again as she hugged Septimus closer. "And here I am."

The party resumed with renewed energy and joy. The group gathered around the table again, with Hermione and Harry included. Severus cut the cake, handing pieces to everyone, while Hermione held Septimus, who was practically glowing with happiness.

As they enjoyed the cake, the conversation flowed freely. Harry and Ginny talked excitedly about the upcoming maternity checkup, Luna shared a whimsical story about magical creatures, and Neville discussed his latest discoveries in herbology. Draco and Severus spoke about the current political climate in the Ministry of Magic. The children played together, Teddy showing Septimus some simple spell tricks, much to his delight.

Severus watched his family and friends, feeling a sense of peace he hadn't felt in a long time. Hermione caught his eye from across the room, and they shared a knowing smile. Despite the challenges and the distance, they had come together for this special day.

As the party wound down and the guests began to leave, Hermione and Severus stood together, watching Septimus play with his new toys. Harry and Ginny, with Teddy in tow, were the last to leave, promising to visit soon.

When the house was finally quiet, Hermione sat on the couch, pulling Septimus into her lap. Severus joined them, wrapping his arm around both of them.

"Today was perfect," Septimus said, sleepy but content.

"It was," Hermione agreed, kissing his head. "And we'll have many more perfect days together."

Severus nodded, feeling a deep sense of gratitude and love. "Happy birthday, Septimus. We love you very much."

"I love you too, Daddy. I love you, Mummy," Septimus murmured, his eyes closing as he drifted off to sleep.
