A troublesome headmaster

September 2nd, 1975. (Tuesday)

At breakfast, the next morning, Lily was busy explaining some of the history of the castle to the new students. She talked about the ceiling, the enchantments going into reflecting the sky outside on the stonework and even referencing the book “Hogwarts, a history”, about the moving staircases and their trick-steps, about certain doors that opened only on certain days or hours, about some shortcuts to go from the Great Hall to the Gryffindor common room, and she was explaining why the castle was sentient-like when the Headmaster arrived, stopping behind her.

“Miss Evans, a word, please?”
“Yes, Headmaster?”
“I have received Professor McGonagall notes about you leaving the castle on certain dates. I’m afraid I can’t allow it, my dear girl.”
“It’s miss Evans, Headmaster. And you should also have received the information that it was not a request. I was merely informing my Head of House of these dates when I would not be here.”
“Indeed. But I can’t allow it. You are a minor in my care, and you do not have you guardians permission to leave the school. It would be irresponsible of me to let you do as you please, I’m sure you understand.”
“Perfectly, Headmaster. Here are my parents’ letter of permission,” smiled the redheaded Gryffindor prefect, handing a sealed letter to the man.
“Ah, but I’m afraid that, as muggle, your parents do not have the authority to grant you this permission, my- miss Evans.”
“That’s why I also have a letter from my eldest sister. As she is seventeen, and thus an adult, she was granted authority over me in the magical world.”
“Your sister can’t be recognized a magical guardian, miss Evans. She is a muggle too!”
“That’s where you’re wrong, Headmaster. And you know it perfectly. Both my sisters are magical.”
“They can’t. They are not studying in Hogwarts, are they?”
“Hogwarts is not the only magical school, Headmaster. It’s not even one of the top magical schools anymore.”
“Preposterous! But I’m not here to debate the merits of Hogwarts. I’m just here to tell you that you do not have the authorization to leave the castle on the dates you submitted.”
“And that’s where I disagree. My parents, as Squibs may not have the authority over me in the magical world. My eldest sister, on the other hand, is my magical guardian. She is, after all, the Head of my House. You should remember, we told you about  it, this summer, when we saw you in Diagon Alley.”
“It’s not possible, miss Evans”, he emphasized the name. “You are a muggleborn, you do not have a House.”
“Oh, but I do. I am the heiress to the House of Sayre”, she spoke clearly, almost loudly. “My eldest sister, Petunia, is the Head of House Sayre. And if she says I can go home on certain dates, you certainly have no right to refuse. It’s a matter of Family Affairs, after all. The charter is truly clear on this subject.”
“I’m afraid that, in the absence of any documentation, all of this is mere speculation.”
“Then the documentation will be on your desk by the next morning. We have already submitted it to the Ministry. If that is all, Headmaster, I would like to go back to my breakfast.”

Smiling slightly, Lily turned back to the table, ignoring the looks all around her. She heard the little huff from the Headmaster before hearing him leaving. Rolling her eyes, she started back on her explanations for her little firsties.
