Mary was awoken much too early in the morning by what seemed to be shouting coming from the bathroom. She quickly sprung out of bed and walked to the bathroom door. As Mary approached the door she heard the shouting more clearly and was able to make out that it was Lily who was yelling. Mary gently knocked on the door and called out to Lily, “Lils, is everything alright?” She asked sheepishly wondering what was going on. Lily flung the door open quickly and composed herself. “No. Everything is most definitely not alright.” Lily said, slowly trying to calm herself down. “Do… Do you want my help?” Mary asked with a mix of confusion and concern painted across her face. Now Lily looked close to tears. “Yes.” She said, opening the bathroom door wider.

Lily stood in the corner with her hand covering her mouth and a look of shock and fear on her face. Mary entered the bathroom further and spotted a small piece of plastic sitting on the counter. She walked closer to the counter and saw infront of her a positive pregnancy test.

“Are you pregnant?!” Mary asked in shock. Lily simply nodded her head in response as her eyes began to water. “Well… Is it James’?” She asked even though she already knew the answer. Lily nodded again now unable to contain her tears. Mary hugged Lily tightly as she began to cry softly.

The pair stood in the bathroom feeling the warm April air brush in through the cracked window for a while. Eventually they made their way back into the dorm room and sat at a small table. “So… When do you think you’ll tell him about it?” Mary asked. “Never.” Lily said firmly. “Lils, you can’t hide his child from him forever.” Mary said softly yet firmly. “Like hell I can’t! Mary, you’ve seen him, he is nowhere near responsible enough to raise a child.” Lily said as if she was stating the obvious. “You can’t possibly be serious. Sure, he’s a little immature but we both know that if you told him he would drop everything in a heartbeat to raise this child with you, and I think we both know that he would make a pretty great dad.” Mary said earnestly.

“That’s exactly why I don’t want to tell him. This child is already going to affect my life, I don’t want to burden anyone else with it.” Lily said solemnly. “Are you saying you want to raise it alone?!” Mary said in shock. “Yes.” Lily replied simply. “Lily, you’re insane if you think that you’re doing that. Look, even if James doesn’t want to raise it with you, you’re crazy if you think I won’t.” Mary placed her hand on Lily’s shoulder gently before continuing, “We’re in this together, Lils. Besides I’m sure once you tell James he’ll agree to raise it with you and then so will Regulus, this kid will have so many parents it won’t know what to do with us.” Lily took comfort in that thought for a moment, even if it was just for a moment.

Once Marlene woke up Mary and Lily told her before they headed down to breakfast. Marlene took the news about as well as Lily did. Lily couldn’t stop herself from looking over at James a few seats away. She couldn’t stop thinking about how he would react or what he would want to do. Though she was starving Lily couldn’t bring herself to eat any of her breakfast which Mary noticed so she hid a few bagels in a ziplock bag she had in her pocket so that Lily would have something to eat later.

After breakfast Lily spotted the marauders in the common room and walked over so she could pull James aside to talk to him. “Hey, Lils!” Sirius said gleefully as she walked over. She had hoped that she would be able to pull James away without being noticed by his friends but unfortunately she didn’t have that luxury today. “Hi, Sirius.” She said, trying to force a genuine smile. She was too overwhelmed with talking to James to be friendly to his friends too.

“What’s wrong Evans? You seem shaken up.” Remus asked looking up from his book. “Nothing,” she said quickly in an attempt to divert their attention away from her, “I’m fine, nothing’s wrong.” Her voice almost sounded believable. “James, I need to talk to you for a minute.” She blurted out trying to keep her voice low. “Sure, Lils, what’s up?” James asked cluelessly. “Um… I need to talk to you… alone.” She said, now the panic in her voice was beginning to seep through. “Oh,” James’ expression looked slightly shocked, “Ok.” He said with a smile.

The pair walked to the marauder’s dorm room in an awkward silence. Once inside Lily closed the door and began to pace slightly before stopping to look at James. “Ok, I need to tell you something… I think you might want to sit down for this.” She said, the feeling of panic setting in further. “Ok, What is it, Lils?” He asked, sitting down on his bed. “Well, I guess there’s no easy way to say this but… I’m pregnant, James, And it’s yours.” Lily said quickly. “Oh… ok,” James said, standing up and putting his hand on Lily’s shoulder, “We’re in this together, Lils.”

After a long conversation Lily and James decided that he needed to tell Regulus about this. He wasn’t sure what Regulus would do, they had only just gotten back together and James knew that this would complicate things especially since Regulus was still in his 6th year, so he wouldn’t graduate before the baby would be born like the rest of them. He also knew that Regulus was scared of putting James in danger which definitely would be complicated by a child. Nevertheless James set out to tell Regulus for worse or for better.

After dinner James made his way down to the slytherin common rooms. Ever since James and Regulus got back together they would go on a walk together after dinner, James told Sirius that he needed help with potions and was getting Slughorn to give him some extra credit in order to sneak out without Sirius catching on. After a few minutes Regulus exited the common room and began to walk at James’ side. James tried to act natural but Regulus could instantly tell that something was wrong.

“What is it?” Regulus asked after a few minutes of walking, they still had a few hours before curfew and were wandering outside of the castle enjoying the warm spring air. “What is what?” James asked nervously. Now the pair had wandered far enough away that there was no one around to hear what they were talking about. “Jaime, I know you and I can tell when there is something you’re not telling me. Now, fess up.” Regulus said with a serious look on his face. Regulus couldn’t stand being lied to or having information withheld from him. James sighed deeply before beginning to explain. “Ok… There’s no easy way to say this, but… Lily’s pregnant… and it’s my baby. Now I know that this might make you want to break up with me because it’s a lot to ask of you especially since you still have a year left of school and your parents are absolute twats but if you’d like to, you could raise it with all of us.” James said, it felt good to finally tell him. “Well… this is pretty big, but… I guess I’d say… yes. Obviously I still want to finish school and I’ll have to suck up to my parents til I can get out of there but once I’m out of hogwarts I want to spend my life with you and this child, and I suppose Mary and Lily as well since they’re obviously coparenting with us, so, what’s the plan from here?” Regulus asked. “Well, we thought that it would be easiest if we all lived in one house together to raise it and you could finish school and then join us.” James suggested “That sounds nice.” Regulus said.

Regulus and James finished out the year feeling hopeful for the future knowing that no matter what would happen they would get through it together.
