The morning sun cast a soft glow over Spinner's End as Severus Snape prepared his son, Septimus, for his first day at daycare. The excitement in the house was palpable, though it was tinged with a hint of nervousness. Severus, dressed in his usual dark robes, knelt beside Septimus, carefully buttoning the small boy's coat.
"Are you ready for your big day, Septimus?" Severus asked, his voice gentle.
Septimus nodded, clutching his small backpack. "Yes, Daddy. Will Mummy be there too?"
"Not today, love," Severus replied, his tone reassuring. "Mummy is at work, but I'll be with you until you get settled in."
They made their way to the front door, Septimus holding tightly to Severus's hand. The walk to the daycare was short, but it felt monumental for both father and son. As they approached the bright, cheerful building, Severus could feel Septimus's grip tightening.
"Look, Septimus," Severus said, pointing to the colorful sign that read "Happy Sunshine Daycare." "This is where you'll make new friends and learn new things."
Septimus's eyes widened with a mix of curiosity and trepidation. "Will you stay with me, Daddy?"
"I'll stay with you until you're comfortable," Severus promised, leading him inside.
The daycare was bustling with activity. Children played with toys, colored pictures, and engaged in various activities. Severus spotted a friendly-looking woman approaching them with a welcoming smile.
"Good morning! You must be Septimus," she greeted warmly. "I'm Miss Penelope, your teacher."
Septimus hid behind Severus, peeking out cautiously. Severus gave him a gentle nudge. "Go on, Septimus. Say hello."
"H-hello," Septimus mumbled, his voice barely audible.
Miss Penelope knelt down to his level. "It's so nice to meet you, Septimus. We're going to have so much fun today!"
Severus watched as Septimus relaxed slightly, the initial fear arousing curiosity. He glanced around the room, noticing the various stations for different activities. It seemed like a safe, inviting place for his son.
"Septimus," Severus said, crouching to his son's eye level, "I'm going to leave you here for a while, but I'll be back to pick you up soon. Okay?"
Septimus's eyes filled with uncertainty. "Promise?"
"I promise," Severus replied, squeezing his hand gently. "But, if you don't behave, they might just adopt you out to someone else."
He meant it as a light-hearted joke, but the words had barely left his mouth when he realized his mistake. Septimus's eyes widened with horror, his lower lip trembling.
"No! No, Daddy! Don't leave me! I don't want to be adopted!" Septimus wailed, tears streaming down his face.
Severus's heart sank as he reached out to comfort his son. "Septimus, it was just a joke. I'm not leaving you forever, and no one is going to adopt you. I'm sorry, love."
But Septimus was inconsolable, his cries echoing through the daycare. The other children and teachers glanced over, sympathy and concern in their eyes. Miss Penelope stepped in, her voice soothing.
"Severus, why don't we sit in the quiet corner? Septimus, would you like to sit with your Daddy and read a book?"
Severus nodded gratefully, lifting the sobbing boy into his arms and following Miss Penelope to a cozy nook filled with soft cushions and a small bookshelf. He settled Septimus onto his lap, rubbing his back gently.
"Septimus, listen to me," Severus said softly, his voice filled with regret. "I am so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. You are my son, and I love you more than anything. No one is ever going to take you away from me. Do you understand?"
Septimus hiccupped, his tiny hands clutching Severus's robes. "Promise?"
"I promise," Severus repeated, kissing his head. "I'm going to be right outside and return for you very soon. You'll have a wonderful time here; I know it."
Miss Penelope handed them a book, and Severus began to read, his deep, soothing voice slowly calming Septimus down. The boy's tears dried up, replaced by a hesitant smile as he became engrossed in the story.
After a while, Severus glanced at Miss Penelope, who nodded encouragingly. "Why don't we try joining the other children now?" she suggested.
Septimus looked up at his father, seeking reassurance. Severus smiled, brushing a stray curl from his forehead. "You'll be fine, Septimus. Remember, I'll be back very soon."
With a deep breath, Septimus nodded, sliding off Severus's lap and taking Miss Penelope's hand. Severus watched as they joined a group of children playing with building blocks, the initial apprehension slowly melting.
Severus stood up, feeling a mixture of pride and relief. He knew this was just the beginning of many milestones for Septimus, and though the road might be rocky, they would navigate it together.

The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the grounds of Hogsmeade Daycare. Inside, children were wrapping up their activities, gathering their belongings, and eagerly waiting for their parents to arrive. Among them was Septimus, who sat by the window, his small backpack on his lap, filled with drawings and crafts from his first day.
Severus walked briskly towards the daycare, his heart filled with anticipation and slight apprehension. He had spent the day thinking about his ill-timed joke and hoping Septimus had enjoyed his time despite the rocky start.
As he entered the building, Severus immediately spotted his son. When seeing his father, Septimus's face lit up, and he ran to him, arms wide open.
"Daddy!" he exclaimed, his previous fear seemingly forgotten in the excitement of seeing Severus again.
Severus knelt down, enveloping Septimus in a warm hug. "Hello, my little wizard. How was your day?"
"It was fun!" Septimus chirped, his eyes sparkling with joy. "We played games, and I made new friends. Look at my drawings!" He pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from his backpack, proudly displaying a colorful scribble that vaguely resembled a dragon.
Severus smiled, his heart swelling with pride. "That's wonderful, Septimus. I'm glad you had a good time."
As they left the daycare, Severus couldn't help but notice the lingering apprehension in Septimus's eyes. He held his son's hand tightly, hoping to ease whatever worries still plagued him. The walk home was filled with Septimus's excited chatter about his day, but Severus knew they still needed to address the joke from that morning.
When they arrived at Spinner's End, Hermione was waiting for them in the living room with a warm smile; she had just gotten home from work. She stood up as they entered, opening her arms for a hug.
"Welcome home, my loves," she greeted, bending down to embrace Septimus. "How was your first day at daycare, sweetheart?"
"It was so much fun, Mummy!" Septimus exclaimed, showing her the same drawing he had shown Severus. "I made this!"
Hermione beamed, admiring the artwork. "That's fantastic, Septimus! I'm so proud of you."
As they settled into the living room, Severus exchanged a knowing look with Hermione, bracing himself for the conversation that was about to unfold. Septimus climbed onto the sofa, his earlier excitement giving way to a more serious expression.
"Mummy," he began, his voice small, "Daddy said something this morning that scared me."
Hermione's smile faltered, and she glanced at Severus with a raised eyebrow. "Oh? What did he say, love?"
Severus sighed, feeling the weight of his mistake. "I made a joke, Hermione, and it was bad. I told Septimus that they might adopt him out to someone else if he didn't behave."
Hermione's eyes widened, and she fixed Severus with a stern look. "Severus, how could you say something like that?"
"It was meant to be a light-hearted joke," Severus replied, his voice filled with regret. "I didn't realize how much it would frighten him."
Septimus looked between his parents, his eyes wide with concern. "Mummy, will they really adopt me to someone else?"
Hermione immediately pulled him into her arms, her voice soft and reassuring. "No, sweetheart. That will never happen. You are our son, and we love you more than anything. You are always going to be with us."
Severus knelt beside them, taking Septimus's hand. "I am so sorry, Septimus. I promise I will never joke about something like that again. You are our precious boy, and we would never let anyone take you away from us."
Septimus sniffled, nodding slowly. "Okay, Daddy. I was just really scared."
"I know, and I am truly sorry for that," Severus said, his voice filled with sincerity. "How about we make a deal? I'll make sure my jokes are better in the future, and you tell us whenever something scares you so we can talk about it. Deal?"
Septimus gave a small smile, nodding. "Deal."
Hermione hugged Septimus tightly, then looked at Severus with affection and mild exasperation. "We have to be careful with our words, Severus. He's at an age where he takes things very seriously."
"I understand," Severus agreed, his expression contrite. "I'll be more mindful in the future."
"Good," Hermione said, her tone softening. "Now, how about we celebrate Septimus's successful first day with his favorite dinner?"
Septimus's eyes lit up. "Macaroni and cheese!"
Severus chuckled, relieved to see his son happy again. "Macaroni and cheese it is."
As they moved to the kitchen, the warmth and love within their home seemed to dispel the lingering shadows of the day's earlier mishap. They worked together to prepare dinner, sharing stories and laughter, each moment reinforcing the bond they shared.
That evening, as they sat down to eat, Severus watched his family with a heart full of gratitude. Despite the challenges and occasional missteps, they were united by love, and he knew they could face anything together.
After dinner, Hermione leaned down to kiss him goodnight as they tucked Septimus into bed. "Sweet dreams, my little star."
Severus followed, placing a gentle kiss on his son's forehead. "Goodnight, Septimus. Remember, we love you very much."
"Love you too, Mummy and Daddy," Septimus murmured, his eyes drifting closed.
