Chapter 3: New Faces
The next day dawned with a sense of anticipation. Regulus awoke to the usual clamor of the Glade, the boys already up and about their tasks. He quickly got dressed and joined the others for breakfast, his mind buzzing with thoughts of what lay ahead.
After the morning meal, Frank approached him with a smile. “Good morning, Regulus. Ready for another day?”
“Definitely,” Regulus replied, his eyes bright with determination.
“Great. Today, I'd like you to meet some of our other key members. They’ve been crucial to our progress in the Maze and have some unique skills that might be of interest to you.”
Regulus nodded, intrigued. He followed Frank across the Glade to a shaded area where a group of boys was gathered. As they approached, the boys turned to face them, their expressions a mix of curiosity and guardedness.
“Regulus, this is the researchers,” Frank said, introducing them with a wave of his hand. “They’re our strategists, thinkers, and some of the best problem-solvers we have.”
The first boy stepped forward, his demeanor confident and self-assured. He had dark, slicked-back hair (with mechanic grease) and a calculating gaze. “I’m Barty,” he said, extending a hand. “It’s good to meet you.”
Regulus shook his hand, feeling a slight unease at Barty's intense stare but appreciating his straightforwardness and grin. “Nice to meet you, Barty.”
Next was a tall, slender boy with sharp features and a cool, composed expression. “Evan,” he introduced himself, his voice smooth and calm. “Welcome to the Glade.”
“Thanks, Evan,” Regulus replied, nodding in greeting.
A wiry boy with a mischievous grin and a twinkle in his eye stepped forward. “I’m Wilkes,” he said, clapping Regulus on the shoulder. “We’re the brains of this operation, if you hadn’t guessed already.”
Regulus chuckled. “I can see that.”
Finally, a quiet boy with midnight black hair and a serious expression stood slightly apart from the others. “I’m Severus,” he said simply, his voice low but clear. “I handle the medical supplies.”
Regulus nodded, feeling a sense of respect for Snape's understated confidence. “Good to meet you, Severus.”
Frank clapped his hands together. “Now that you’ve met the boys, I’ll leave you to get acquainted. They’ll show you the ropes and help you find your footing.”
As Frank walked away, Barty turned to Regulus with a sly smile. “So, Reggie, ready to dive into the deep end?”
Regulus grinned. “Absolutely.”
Over the course of the morning, the boys introduced Regulus to their various tasks and responsibilities. Barty and Evan showed him their detailed maps and notes on the Maze, explaining the patterns they’d observed and the strategies they used to navigate the ever-changing labyrinth.
“We've been studying the Maze for months,” Evan said, his finger tracing a complex diagram. “It's constantly shifting, but there are certain patterns we’ve identified. It’s all about being one step ahead.”
Regulus listened intently, absorbing the information. “Have you found any clues about a way out?”
Barty exchanged a glance with Evan. “A few,” he admitted. “But nothing concrete. Yet.”
Wilkes, meanwhile, demonstrated some traps and obstacles they’d encountered in the Maze, his enthusiasm infectious. “You’ve got to stay sharp out there. One wrong move, and it’s game over.”
Severus, though quieter, proved to be an invaluable resource when it came to medical knowledge. He showed Regulus the makeshift infirmary and the various herbal remedies he’d concocted from the limited supplies they had.
“Knowledge is power,” Severus said simply, his dark eyes piercing. “And it might just save your life.”
As the day wore on, Regulus found himself increasingly impressed by the boys’ ingenuity and resourcefulness. They were a tight-knit group, each bringing their own strengths to the table, and he felt a growing sense of camaraderie with them.
By the time evening fell, Regulus was exhausted but exhilarated. He joined the others around the fire, feeling more connected to the Gladers than ever before. The challenges of the Maze were daunting, but with allies like the Researchers, he felt a renewed sense of hope.
As he lay down to sleep that night, Regulus’s thoughts drifted to the Maze and the mysteries it held. He was determined to find the answers, not just for himself, but for all the boys trapped in this strange, unforgiving place.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges and discoveries, but for now, he allowed himself a moment of peace, knowing he wasn’t alone in this fight. Together, they would face whatever lay ahead, and perhaps, one day, they would find their way out of the Maze.

As the evening settled in, Regulus felt a mixture of exhaustion and exhilaration. He had learned so much from the Researchers and was eager to contribute more to the Glade. After finishing dinner, he sat by the fire, watching the flames dance and contemplating the day's events.
His thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of a new face. A tall, athletic boy with messy black hair and askew glasses approached, his presence commanding attention. He had a confident stride and a warm, approachable smile.
“Hey, Regulus,” the boy greeted, his voice friendly. “I’m James. I heard you’ve been doing great work today.”
Regulus looked up, surprised by the easy familiarity in James’s tone. “Hi, James. Thanks. I’m just trying to find my place here.”
James sat down beside him, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. “From what I’ve heard, you’re fitting in just fine. The Researchers are a tough crowd to impress, and you seem to have done it.”
Regulus felt a flush of pride at James's words. “They’re a good group. I’ve learned a lot from them already.”
James nodded, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. “You know, I’ve been thinking. We could use someone with your skills on the Runners' team. It’s dangerous work, but I think you’d be a great fit.” James grinned a troublemaker grin, making Regulus' stomach flutter unexpectedly.
Regulus felt a surge of excitement. “Really? I’d love to give it a try.”
“Great!” James exclaimed, his enthusiasm infectious. “We’ll start tomorrow. I’ll show you the ropes and introduce you to the rest of the team.”
As they sat by the fire, Regulus found himself drawn to James’s easy confidence and genuine friendliness. They talked late into the night, sharing stories and learning more about each other. Despite the hardships of the Glade, there was something about James that made Regulus feel hopeful.
The next morning, Regulus joined James and the other Runners as they prepared to enter the Maze. The air was filled with a mix of tension and excitement, each boy focused on the task ahead.
“Ready for your first run?” James asked, clapping Regulus on the back.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Regulus replied, his heart racing with anticipation.
The massive stone doors creaked open, revealing the dark, foreboding entrance to the Maze. Regulus took a deep breath and followed James inside, the familiar sense of fear and exhilaration washing over him.
James led the way, moving with practiced ease through the twisting corridors. Regulus followed closely, his senses on high alert. The Maze was as intimidating as ever, but with James by his side, he felt a newfound confidence.
As they navigated the labyrinth, James pointed out landmarks and explained their strategy for mapping the ever-changing paths. Regulus listened intently, absorbing every detail.
Hours passed as they moved through the Maze, their progress steady but cautious. Regulus marveled at James’s skill and leadership, feeling a growing admiration for the other boy.
When the sun began to dip lower in the sky, James signaled for them to head back. They retraced their steps, racing against time to reach the safety of the Glade.
Just as the last rays of sunlight disappeared, they slipped through the closing doors, breathless but unharmed.
“Not bad for your first run,” James said, a grin spreading across his face. “You did great, Regulus.”
“Thanks, James,” Regulus replied, smiling back. “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
James shrugged, his eyes twinkling. “We make a good team.”
As they joined the others for the evening meal, Regulus felt a sense of accomplishment and belonging. The challenges of the Maze were daunting, but with James and the other Runners by his side, he knew they could face whatever lay ahead.
That night, as he lay down to sleep, Regulus’s thoughts drifted to James. There was something about him that drew Regulus in, a connection he couldn’t quite explain. He felt a warmth in his chest, a spark of something new and exciting.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges and discoveries, but for now, he allowed himself to bask in the glow of his first successful run and the budding friendship with James. Together, they would uncover the secrets of the Maze and find their way out.
