Regulus fought everyday to get his parents attention, to gain their love and approval by constantly trying to impress them to no avail.
He didn't leave with Sirius that night because apart of him was not ready to let go that last shred of hope that maybe if he had tried hard enough.
He hoped that one day they would love him.
The last thing Sirius said to him the night he left was "Beautiful things don't ask for attention Regulus."
Regulus had eventually realised a few years later that sirius was right and so he he began to heal and find the beauty in the things that didn't ask for anything back from him.
