MARVELOUS TALES

TORDENGUD

Burst of lightning

A young woman called Jane Foster was leading an ordinary life, recently graduating high school with intentions of becoming a doctor upon going to college. One day though she witnessed a burst of lightning on what was supposed to be a cloudless summer’s day and was honestly surprised. She went to check it out and found a young man whom had nothing but the clothes on his back and a nasty limp. He didn’t even remember his name.

Jane takes him home, with her father helping him nurse back to health. There are no records of him anywhere. Though thanks to some connections with a family friend whom works at city hall, they made some papers for him. They name him Donald, after Jane’s paternal grandfather, surname Blake, her mother’s maiden name.

Despite having no records or education, Donald was intelligent and had a good head on his shoulders. Jane took a gap year to help Donald, in the coming year, earn a diploma, so the two could attend a college together. Both study medicine. Donald and Jane would both become doctors at the same hospital.

Dreams of a horizon storm

Donald would one day receive strange dreams which shows him a cave in Norway. The dream kept plaguing him each night. When a medical congress was announced taking place in the country, Donald volunteered to go. Jane, his close friend for many years, and worried about him, went along.

On moments they didn’t need to appear at the congress, Donald would explore to find the cave from his vision. Both he and Jane would find the cave. However, they also found something else. The dormant form of Hrungnir, a Frost Giant. Upon awakening he goes on a rampage.

The only other thing in the cave was a cane. Despite having only this stick and a bad leg, he stood in between Hrungnir and Jane. As the cane struck the rock wall it turned into a hammer and Donald Blake turned into the god of thunder…the Almighty Thor.

God of Thunder

In the form of Thor, he defeats Hrungnir and shatters him into a million pieces, but he turns back to Donald Black and the hammer into a cane as he falls unconscious. Jane carries her friend out of the cave and gets him medical assistance.

As Donald woke up, Jane asked Donald what that was about. Donald says he is regaining some memories from the past, from before he met Jane Foster. He was Thor. THE Thor whom in the past was worshipped as a god in Norse mythology.

In the past, his own arrogance got him banished, his powers taken and his mind wiped by his father Odin. He got to live as a crippled human to learn humility. And he did, and he learned a lot more, thanks to Jane Foster. However, since his power has been reawakened recently, he can’t just revert back to his godly form at will. He’ll be switching between human and true form until he has regained all his powers.

Jane asked what this means for them. They have been together for so long. Thor says he has to visit Asgard, his old friends and family to catch up…and to make some amends for his past mistakes. But he will return to Midgard…Or Earth rather. Because he has a new life he values more. If Jane is willing to wait for his return. Jane smiles and says ‘always’.

Meeting Dad

Over the next few months Thor is getting used to his old powers again and able to retain his true form for longer periods of time. He is able to finally meet his father in person again, Odin himself.

First thing is Thor apologizing for his arrogance of the past. Odin forgives him since he has learned his lesson, otherwise he wouldn’t have led Thor to the place where he regained his powers.

Jane though chews Odin out that despite the punishment, it was grave and cruel to wipe his memories like that. Odin actually laughs at Jane’s bravery and willingness to stand up to a god. He sees how Thor took a liking to it. Odin says though he wondered every day if he didn’t go too far in his punishment but at the time he didn’t see another solution…or was blind to it.

Thor wants to put that behind him and doesn’t blame his father. Certainly not when it caused him to meet Jane and learn more about Earth.

Odin says a reunion is planned with his friends and family, but he knows Thor would return to Earth. When that time comes, Thor could act as an ambassador for Asgard, as well as prepare the world. Because Thor’s return was not just because he learned his lesson. Big strong evils whom had been dormant on Earth or beyond the stars that haven’t set their sights on Earth in a long time may return. And Midgard may need a champion to help fight it. Thor is willing to do that.

Another few months later Thor returns to Earth, and to Jane Foster. He was allowed to bring a few small souvenirs from Asgard. Aside some of his old armor and gear, and some Asgardian Ale…he also brought his two pet goats Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr (Gris and Jos for short).

TRIVIA

  • For Thor I wanted to go back to his classic comic book origins, in which he had an alter ego of Donald Blake. In the comics he was bonded to the person, but here Thor genuinely turned into Blake.

  • Jane Foster is a full on doctor instead of a nurse like the comics or astrophysicist like the MCU.

  • Thor’s first enemies were rock monsters known as Kronoans. Hrungnir was a Frost Giant from Norse myth said to be made of stone and being killed by Thor. So I decided to be faithful to myth but also refer to Thor’s first enemy in his debut issue is fighting rock creatures;

  • The two goats of Thor are the same goats that pull his battle chariot in Norse mythology.

  • The title of this chapter is Norse for ‘thunder god’.

  • In the comics Odin often interfered in Thor’s relationship with Jane Foster, really going to certain lengths to sabotage it. Here he takes a liking to her for her guts. Though he can’t make her immortal and is worried due to her being human and him Asgardian and how that’ll affect their relationship, Odin acts more respectful for Jane and her relationship to his son.
