What Was It All For?

Neither of them wanted to die. Neither of them were prepared to die. Neither of them deserved to die.

That didn't stop them though, didn't keep them from the battlefield.

The funny thing was, neither of them were strong in their beliefs. Neither of them truly had a reason to be there.

James Potter.

Of course he cared about the war and what they were fighting for, but why did he have to be the one doing the fighting? Why did any of his friends have to be the ones doing the fighting? They were only kids, they shouldn't have been caught in the crossfire, much less thrown onto the front lines.

Barty Crouch Jr.

The thing with him was that he never believed in his side of the war. He just didn't want to be like his father, why couldn't they understand that?

And then it was too late. He had chosen his side and he couldn’t go back. But he never believed any of the nonsense they were spouting, the propaganda that filled his ears.

They weren't supposed to meet again. It wasn't part of the plan, none of it was.

I suppose that doesn't matter. In the end, none of it matters. It doesn't matter where they were, it doesn't matter who said the spell, honestly, it doesn't matter who died.

But if you must know, it was Barty. He died in James’ arms, begging for the other to save him. But he couldn't, he didn't know how.

Of course, he wished he could. I think James would've done just about anything to save the boy, to take back his spell and his childhood best friend, even after all the horrible things he had done.

Or perhaps just to shut him up. “I don’t want to die” the boy kept repeating over and over again like that would change anything. Like it could take back everything that happened between the two.

Of course, it didn't. Barty died. James did to, but that would come much later.

They weren't the only ones with untimely deaths. Regulus, Marlene, Lily, Evan, Dorcas. None of them asked for this. None of them deserved it.

So why? What was the point of it all?
