Accepting the Unexpected

The early morning sunlight filtered through the heavy curtains of number 12 Grimmauld Place, casting a warm, golden glow over the room. Harry stirred, his dreams dissolving into the hazy remnants of sleep. With a sigh, he pushed himself up from the bed, running a hand through his unruly hair. The flat was quiet, save for the distant hum of Muggle traffic outside, a comforting background noise that had become a part of his daily life.

Harry stretched, glancing at the calendar on the wall. Another day, another mission. As an Auror, the days blended into a continuous stream of assignments, paperwork, and the occasional burst of adrenaline-fueled action. The end of the war had brought peace to the wizarding world, but it had also left behind scars that needed healing, criminals that needed apprehending, and dark remnants of Voldemort's reign that required vigilance.

He made his way to the kitchen, the familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee greeting him. Kreacher, the aged house-elf who had once served the Black family, was already bustling about, preparing breakfast. Despite Harry’s attempts to encourage him to rest, Kreacher insisted on maintaining the household, claiming it was his duty.

"Good morning, Master Harry," Kreacher said, his voice gruff but warm. "Your coffee is ready."

"Thanks, Kreacher," Harry replied with a small smile. He took a sip, savoring the rich flavor. It was one of the few luxuries he allowed himself in the whirlwind of his life.

After a quick breakfast, Harry dressed in his Auror robes, the dark fabric fitting him like a second skin. The robes were a symbol of his commitment to justice, a reminder of why he had chosen this path. He fastened his wand holster to his side, the familiar weight of his wand providing a sense of comfort and readiness.

The journey to the Ministry of Magic was uneventful, the Floo Network depositing him in the bustling atrium of the grand building. Harry navigated through the crowd, nodding to familiar faces, and exchanging brief pleasantries. Despite his status as a war hero, he had worked hard to be seen as just another member of the Auror Office, earning respect through his dedication and skill rather than his past.

Reaching the Auror Office, Harry found his desk already piled high with reports and case files. He sighed, settling into his chair. The life of an Auror was not as glamorous as it might seem. Much of it involved meticulous paperwork, following leads, and ensuring every detail was accounted for. But there were moments – moments of clarity, of victory, of justice served – that made it all worthwhile.

Ron Weasley, his best friend, and fellow Auror, strolled over, a mischievous grin on his face. "Morning, mate. Ready for another day of chasing down dark wizards and filling out forms?"

Harry chuckled. "As ready as I'll ever be. What's on the agenda today?"

"Looks like we're following up on that tip about a potential Death Eater hideout near Hogsmeade. Thought we could pay a visit and see what we find."

The mention of Hogsmeade brought a wave of nostalgia. The village held many memories, both good and bad. "Sounds like a plan. Let's hope it's not another false lead."

As the day progressed, Harry immersed himself in his work. The mission to Hogsmeade proved challenging but ultimately fruitful, uncovering valuable information that could lead to the capture of a notorious fugitive.

Harry and Ron were finishing up a long day at the Auror Office. They had spent most of the afternoon on paperwork, and the atmosphere in the office was one of quiet fatigue. As they packed up their things, Harry glanced over at Ron.

“You headed home, mate?” Harry asked, stretching his arms above his head.

Ron nodded, closing the file he’d been working on. “Yeah, Hermione’s probably got dinner ready by now. You?”

Harry shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips. “Actually, I’m going over to Andromeda’s tonight. Thought I’d spend some time with Teddy.”

Ron’s expression softened. “How is Teddy doing?”

“He’s good,” Harry replied, his smile widening. “Growing up fast. Every time I see him, he seems to have learned something new.”

Ron grinned, shaking his head in amusement. “I can’t believe how quickly kids grow. Feels like just yesterday he was a baby.”

Harry chuckled. “Tell me about it. He’s got this new broomstick that Andromeda got him. I promised I’d watch him show off his flying skills.”

Ron picked up his bag and began to walk out of the office, “Sounds fun. Tell them Hermione and I say ‘Hi’, and please mate don’t stay for to much longer I know they want to see you soon”

Harry sighed, the weight of the day finally catching up with him, “Don’t worry I’m right behind you”

After a long day at the Ministry, Harry found solace in the thought of spending time with his godson, Teddy Lupin. Dinner at Andromeda Tonks' house had become a comforting routine, a respite from the daily grind of his Auror duties. The mere thought of Teddy's infectious laughter and wide-eyed curiosity brought a smile to Harry's face.

As he stepped out of the Floo Network and into Andromeda's warm, inviting living room, the familiar scent of home-cooked food greeted him. He could hear Teddy's excited babble from the next room, and he felt a wave of affection wash over him. But as he moved further into the house, he noticed an unexpected presence.

Draco Malfoy was seated on the couch, looking more delicate and ethereal than Harry remembered. His platinum blonde hair was longer, falling in soft waves around his face, and his features seemed gentler, almost feminine. He wore a light, flowing shirt that accentuated his slender frame, giving him an air of effortless grace. Harry's heart skipped a beat, a rush of emotions he couldn't quite place flooding his senses.

"Harry!" Teddy's joyful shout pulled him from his reverie. The young boy barreled into him, wrapping his small arms around Harry's legs.

"Hey, Teddy!" Harry scooped him up, feeling the warmth of the child's embrace. "How's my favorite little wizard?"

"I'm good! Look at this!" Teddy proudly showed off a new toy broomstick, his hair turning a vibrant shade of blue in his excitement.

"That's brilliant!" Harry laughed, ruffling Teddy's hair. "Have you been practicing your flying?"

Teddy nodded enthusiastically, and Harry's heart swelled with pride. He set the boy down, his gaze drifting back to Draco, who was watching them with an unreadable expression. The room felt suddenly smaller, and the air charged with an unfamiliar tension.

Andromeda entered the room, a kind smile on her face. "Harry, it's so good to see you. Dinner is almost ready. Draco and I were just catching up."

"Hello, Andromeda," Harry replied, giving her a quick hug. "It's great to see you too."

Draco stood up, his movements graceful and fluid. "Potter," he greeted, his voice smooth and calm.

"Malfoy," Harry replied, trying to keep his tone neutral. It was strange seeing Draco here, in this setting, so different from the cold, aloof figure he remembered from their school days.

As they all moved to the dining table, Harry couldn't help but steal glances at Draco. Something was mesmerizing about him, a delicate beauty that drew Harry's eyes. He found himself wondering about the changes Draco had undergone since the war, the hardships he had faced, and the person he had become.

Dinner was a lively affair, filled with Teddy's chatter and Andromeda's stories. Draco remained somewhat quiet, but his presence was undeniable. He looked delicate like he had finally figured out who he was he had an air of a concealed arrogance that could only be seen by those who knew him.

After dinner, Harry and Teddy played in the living room while Andromeda and Draco cleaned up. Teddy's laughter filled the room, a balm to Harry's weary soul. But even as he focused on his godson, he was acutely aware of Draco's presence.

Eventually, Andromeda came to collect Teddy for his bedtime, leaving Harry and Draco alone. The silence was heavy, the weight of their shared history pressing down on them.

"You're good with him," Draco said quietly, breaking the silence.

Harry looked up, meeting Draco's gaze. "Thanks. He's... he's a bright spot in all of this."

Draco nodded, his eyes softening. "I can see that."

There was a long pause, the air between them thick with unspoken emotions. Harry felt a rush of conflicting feelings – curiosity, confusion, and something deeper, something he wasn't ready to name.

"Why are you here, Malfoy?" Harry asked finally, his voice gentle but firm.

Draco sighed, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear. "Andromeda is family. She's... she's been helping me. Trying to figure things out."

“Will you come back?”

“Well Andromeda needs more help with Teddy and I need to be somewhere else other than that ghastly Manor”

Harry nodded, understanding the unspoken words. They were both trying to rebuild, to find their place in a world that had been shattered by war. He took a deep breath, deciding to extend an olive branch. "It's good that you have her. She's wonderful."

"She is," Draco agreed, a faint smile touching his lips, “I do hope to see you again, Teddy adores you” he smiled shyly looking up at Harry. “All he does is talk about how cool Uncle Harry is, honestly it is exhausting”

“I usually come on Tuesday for dinner. If you were wondering” Harry says with trepidation. They may both be adults but their past still stands. Harry would like to be well acquainted, if not for Andromeda than for Teddy’s sake at least.

“I will keep that in mind,” Malfoy says looking away, “I do have to get going though… It was nice to see you, Potter”

Standing up Malfoy walks to the fireplace and picks up a handful of floo powder. Turning he gives Harry a final small smile before he is taken by the flames.

Harry stood walking into the kitchen and saying goodnight to Andromeda before also taking his leave.

Harry and Ron were on lunch break, a light patter of rain hitting the windows as they both pulled out their lunches. Harry had chosen a simple sandwich and a cup of tea, while Ron had piled his desk high with an assortment of food.

"You know, mate, if you keep eating like that, you might have to start running with me in the mornings," Harry teased, taking a bite of his sandwich.

Ron shrugged, unfazed. "I'm an Auror. I need my energy," he replied, grinning. "Besides, Hermione always says I don't eat enough vegetables. This salad here should make her happy."

Harry chuckled, shaking his head. Just then, a familiar voice cut through their shared office.

"Speaking of Hermione," Ron said, looking over Harry's shoulder. "There she is."

Hermione walked towards them, holding her bag of lunch and lightly sitting on the edge of Ron’s desk. She wore a warm smile, clearly pleased to see her friends. "Mind if I join you two?"

"Of course not," Harry said, messing with a broken time-turner on his desk, "Always a pleasure."

"How’s your day been so far?" she asked, looking between them.

"Busy," Ron said, around a mouthful of food. "Paperwork never ends."

Harry nodded in agreement. "Pretty much the same. But it's good to take a break."

Hermione smiled, taking a sip of her tea. "Well, I’m glad I could catch you two. I thought maybe we could do something this Saturday. It’s been ages since we’ve had a proper day out together."

Ron looked at Harry expectantly, but Harry shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Actually, Hermione, I can't this Saturday," he said, a hint of regret in his voice.

Hermione raised an eyebrow. "Why not? You usually keep Saturdays free."

Harry sighed, looking down at his sandwich. "I’m going to visit Teddy. Andromeda's been asking if I could spend more time with him."

Hermione's expression softened. "Of course, Harry. I should have guessed. How is Teddy doing?"

"He's great," Harry said, a smile tugging at his lips. " Andromeda says he's been practicing flying on his new broomstick, and suddenly has a new passion for making potions? I don’t know but I promised I'd watch him this weekend."

Ron chuckled. "Sounds like he’s slowly turning into Hermione."

“Hey! I think that broadening your horizons is a good thing. There is nothing like a good book, unfortunately, some of us would never know…” She says pointedly toward Ron

Ron gawked, “ I’ll have you know Hermione I quite enjoy a good quidditch series!”

Harry nodded watching as the two squabbled as usual finally getting a chance to chime in, "Well, no matter what at least he is doing something other than make me the newest target of his bludger. And it’s important to Andromeda that I’m there for him. He needs all the support he can get."

Hermione reached out and squeezed Harry’s hand. "That’s really wonderful of you, Harry. Teddy's lucky to have you."

Harry squeezed her hand back, feeling a warmth spread through him. "Thanks, Hermione. It means a lot to hear that."

"So, what’s the plan for your visit?" Ron asked curiosity in his voice.

Harry leaned back in his chair, thinking. "Well, after flying, I thought we might do some reading together. Teddy loves stories about magical creatures. But we’ll see”

Hermione, however, seemed to have something on her mind. She glanced at Harry several times, a thoughtful expression on her face.

"Harry," she began, her tone slightly tentative, "I’ve been meaning to ask you something."

Harry looked up from his nearly finished sandwich. "What is it, Hermione?"

She hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. "I was thinking… you know my friend Emily from the Department of Magical Creatures?"

Harry nodded slowly. "Yeah, I’ve met her a few times. She seems nice."

"Well," Hermione continued, "she’s been asking about you. And I thought… maybe you’d like to go out with her sometime?"

Harry blinked in surprise. "Go out with her? Like on a date?"

Hermione nodded, her eyes earnest. "Yes, I think you two might get along really well. She’s smart, funny, and really kind. I just… I want you to be happy, Harry."

Ron chimed in, a teasing grin on his face. "Yeah, mate. Emily’s great. And it’s not like you’ve got any plans for the weekend other than visiting Teddy."

Harry felt a mix of emotions swirling inside him. "I don’t know, Hermione. I mean, I appreciate it, but…"

Hermione placed a hand on his arm. "Harry, you deserve to find someone who makes you happy. Just give it a chance. If it doesn’t work out, no harm done."

Harry looked at his two best friends, their faces full of hope and encouragement. He sighed, feeling the weight of their concern for him. "Alright, Hermione. I’ll give it a shot. But no promises."

Hermione’s face lit up with a bright smile. "Thank you, Harry. I’ll talk to Emily and set something up. You won’t regret it."

Harry managed a small smile in return, though he still felt a bit uneasy. "Okay, but let’s take it slow. I’m not sure I’m ready for anything serious."

"Of course," Hermione agreed. "Just a casual outing. No pressure."

Ron slapped Harry on the back. "That’s the spirit, mate. Who knows? Maybe you’ll have a great time."

Harry chuckled, feeling a bit more at ease. "Yeah, maybe."
