They were laying in bed, tangled up in each other.
Lily had her head on James' chest; he had his hand in her hair. Her thoughts were spinning.
Earlier that evening, their two best friends, Sirius and Remus, had gotten married. It was about damn time too. But, this meant that all night long, James and Lily had been fielding question after not-so-subtle question about when they were going to tie the knot.
They had both been thinking about it, but neither had the guts to bring the conversation up.
But finally, laying in bed at 3 am half tipsy off champagne, Lily had enough and blurted it out.
"How bad of an idea do you think it would really be if we got married?" she said, in a rushed tone.
She could practically hear James' brain shortcircuit. It took him what was probably ten seconds but what felt like hours to respond.
"Absolutely terrible," he replied, voice dripping with sarcasm, which confused Lily further. So, ignoring his reply, she bolted upright in bed and stared her boyfriend down.
"Let's do it. I mean, why not?" she questioned.
James just stares at her. Then, without a word, he jumps out of bed, kisses her forehead, and runs to the closet. Following him out of bed, Lily is hot on his heels, going into their walk-in closet absolutely terrified. All she can think is "Oh god. This is it. I've done it; I've scared him off. All the years of him chasing me and one bloody proposal is all it takes to make him leave."
Before she can voice her concerns though, she notices what he's doing. James Potter is standing on a stool reaching in the back of the closet. When he finally comes down, he puts something behind his back and smirks.
"What?" Lily says, through shaky breaths.
"I would love to get married Lils, more than anything.
But there's one problem."
"What's that?"
"You ruined your surprise."
Before Lily can blink, James is on one knee, pulling out the most beautiful ring she's ever seen.
"Wait, wait, what? How long have you had that?" She's practically yelling, but she can't help it. James just smirks and says, "I bought it the week after our first date." Lily chokes on a sob.
"So, Lily Evans. I've already said yes to your proposal. Will you do me the same honor, and make me the happiest man alive?
Marry me?"
"Yes!" Lily screams, tackling him.
So, there, in their closet in the middle of the night, with Lily in nothing but James' t-shirt and James wearing only boxers, Lily Evans and James Potter promise each other a lifetime.
