Chapter 2
I peeked my head around to see the first girl walk forwards, she had a short, blonde trim and a button nose. Although she seemed confident within herself, I could tell that she was nervous. I gave her a friendly cheer, but the teachers didn’t appreciate that gesture, and I was given another warning.
“Alright, Black,” The headmaster recited, and I noticed that was Sirius’ last name. I turned around to face him, but he was looking away. “Channel all of your energy, allow your magic to flow through your veins alongside the blood in your body,” The girl took a deep breath in, her eyes shut tightly, “And release.” As she exhaled, her hair began to glow a bubblegum pink colour, and floating bubbles appeared, taking the shape of love hearts.
After she was claimed by the love element, it was almost the same for everybody else. There were five electrics, whom’s hair became static and small crackles of electricity could be heard, and nine airs, who floated off of the ground slightly.
When it was finally my turn, the reality set in. This truly was a turning point in my life, this would determine my whole future, and there was no chance that I’d get anything rare or legendary! Sirius gave me a playful nudge, and I looked back at him with a smile before stepping forward in front of the whole school.
Now, as you know, I’m a pretty confident person, but receiving an element in front of thousands of students? That was out of my league. The headmaster gave me the same speech as he did everybody else, word for word.
“Channel all of your energy, allow your magic to flow through your veins alongside the blood in your body,” I shut my eyes and took a deep inhale, feeling my veins grow hotter, and my body feel stronger with every passing second. I began to feel a flicker of something inside of me, although I wasn’t sure what it was, I knew that it couldn't be extinguished. “And release.” As I exhaled, something extraordinary happened.
My entire body felt hot, and once I opened my eyes, I saw why. I was on fire, literally. My body, at that moment, was enveloped in flames. I hurriedly shook it off, quite easily, and I remained uninjured.
Silence enveloped the hall, everybody, including me, were in a state of shock. I turned around to see Dumbledore grinning widely, creepy but whatever. Then, I turned to face my friends, who were grinning even wider, which was encouraging.
“So, am I a freak now or what?” I asked, humour staining my sarcastic voice.
Suddenly, shouts of protests broke out from the crowd, and some idiots were claiming that it wasn’t fair, as if I could control it. The headmaster demanded silence from the hall, and silence was what he received.
“Come stand behind me whilst the others get sorted.” Headmaster Dumbledore commanded, and I instantly obeyed. Sirius was next, which was as exciting as it can get. When Sirius was channelling, I noticed him twitching, which seemed weird, but maybe he would be powerful, and that’s why. I was right.
His black hair went from looking shaggy and messy, to looking illuminated and gorgeous underneath the shine of the halo which had spawned above his head. Almost everybody gasped in shock, me receiving fire was one thing, but Sirius receiving light? What are the chances.
“Light, nice.” I whispered to him as we fist bumped and he joined me.
Remus was next, and I already knew that he was going to be special. Not only would it be cliche and amazing, but he also was extremely powerful, based on the cause of his scars. And as always, I was right.
When Remus did his manifesting, his shadow became three dimensional, coming out from the ground behind him and wrapping his body like a blanket. It was like he was hugging his shadow, before it merged into him, and he walked over to join us, giving Sirius a peck on the cheek when he walked over.
Peter was up after him, and the school was on the edge of their seats now, to see what was next. Peter didn’t look as excited as everyone else, though. He was practically shaking in his boots, and refused to make eye contact with anyone in the hall, especially the headmaster.
His eyes were closed before he even got there, causing him to stumble a bit and making me and Sirius chuckle, whereas Remus smacked us for being rude and disrespectful.
The headmaster continued his routine, of giving his speech and guiding Peter through the process. Surprisingly, Peter actually got through it with ease, and received one of the coolest elements (nothing in comparison to mine, of course). For him, it was as if time slowed down around everybody, but we could feel the effects like us, it was like holding a weight for the first time.
When it went back to normal, I cheered as loudly as I could, clapping alongside Sirius, before rushing forwards to bring Peter back with us. The next few people were normal, with fifty seven people receiving air, thirty five receiving electricity and seventy one receiving love.
Once the atmosphere had calmed down, it was time for Lily’s group. Firstly, was her friend Marlene. She confidently strode up, mouthing to Sirius that she was going to get a legendary better than his and then winking.
Unfortunately for her, she received air, and walked off stage disheartened. Next up was Mary, who also walked forwards with confidence; Mary’s aura was that of the stars, bright and shining, but never the main centre of attention. She received love, but unlike Marlene, was very happy with this.
Lastly in their group was Lily, who gave me, Sirius, Remus and Peter dirty looks, before going through the process as well.
“What did I do?” I whispered, and even Remus giggled.
Shockingly, she didn’t get a normal power. As her eyes were shut, her fists clenched, and anybody could tell that she was focusing. When she exhaled, her skin became translucent, and I felt myself almost collapse at how cool she was. When she was back to normal, she skipped gleefully towards us, her ginger hair swaying with every movement, before joining Peter at the end of the row.
The selections went normal for about twenty more, and I was feeling so unexplainably bored, even though I literally got an undiscovered element. I couldn’t imagine how everyone else felt, except for Sirius, he literally had his head rested on Remus’ shoulder.
Finally, it was down to the last five people. And they happened to be Sirius’ brother’s friend group. The first one to approach the stage was the girl from my english class, she calmly accepted her electrical powers before nonchalantly stepping down.
The second was a boy with blonde curls and dark skin, whom the headmaster referred to as Rosier. Sirius quickly informed me that his first name was Evan. He received air and smirked as he got down to join Dorcas.
Next up was Barty Crouch, he’d shoved me in the hallways when we were walking here, which is how I remembered him and his messy, brown hair. It wasn’t a surprise when he was given electricity as well, his aura was closer to a lightning bolt than a jolt of electricity.
Penultimately in both their group and the year was Pandora Rosier, the girl who had a rabbit earlier in the line. Her and Evan were clearly twins, except her features were far more soft than his. Whilst they both had button noses, his had a slight hint of straightness. And although they both had big lips, hers were a cupid bow shape and his were just full.
Anyway, as she stepped forward, she handed her bunny to Regulus who was standing behind her. He gently stroked it as Pandora was sorted. As her eyes were closed, instead of her face being serious, she was smiling with her crooked teeth. When she exhaled, flowers sprouted by her feet, vines wrapped around her arms and legs, and a crown of roses appeared on her head. Pandora did a giddy twirl before collecting her bunny and joining Lily on the end of our row.
Finally, Regulus stepped up. Sparing me a cold glare as he walked in my direction. I gave Regulus a thumbs up, and I could’ve swore that his cheeks went slightly pinker.
“You’ve got this, Reg!” Sirius cheered, and Regulus flipped him off from behind as he channelled his energy. He was genuinely focused, and I can admire that. Once he exhaled, it was similar to how I was, but Regulus was in a giant bubble of water, and every inch of him that was in contact with the water wasn’t human.
His skin had turned into blue fish scales, and his legs into a blue mermaid tail. He had gills on his sides, and only his black curls remained. It was short lived, as each of these moments only lasted a few seconds. When he wasn’t enveloped in the water, Regulus was back to normal.
Sirius ran over to give him a tight hug, and after Regulus had shoved him off, the hall started clearing out. Except for us, of course.
“You seven who remain, please come with me into my office.” Headmaster Dumbledore said.
