Amara and Mateo's relationship
OK, so one thing that we know from the Percy Jackson books is that going through struggles and life-threatening situations tend to create close bonds so demigod tend to be pretty close with each other.
I feel like this would affect relationships a lot as we see Percy and Annabeth really relying on each other because of how much they’ve been through. I think that their love kind of goes a bit deeper than what you normally see and that’s probably pretty true for a lot of other demigod. They love faster, they love stronger. They don’t really hold back because, if you love someone and you hold back, in their life, that person could be dead the next day and you would never get a chance to tell them. So I think that they would be a lot stronger with it. Amara and Matteo‘s relationship is a mutual thing but they don’t label it. They’ve never explicitly said like “I love you” or anything (other then in a joking or ironic way) but it’s a mutual thing that they understand. it’s shared looks it’s hugs. it’s their inside jokes. It’s just their relationship, but they don’t label it in a romantic sense. They don’t say “this is my boyfriend.” “This is my girlfriend” and I think that applies for a lot of Demigods as well because it goes past simple things like “girlfriend” or “boyfriend”. Percy and Annabeth are soulmates (try and fight me on this. I dare you.) That is the best way to describe them and it’s the only thing that goes deep enough to really explain their bond in my opinion. I don’t think that all Demigods have this, but I feel like “girl/boyfriend” Doesn’t go deep enough for the love that Demigods tend to experience for each other. I think that partner would be a term that’s probably a lot because when they fight alongside someone you don’t say “they’re my boy/girlfriend” I think they would be like “this is my partner” because it implies that this is not just somebody who they like romantically it implies that, for example Matteo and Amara; “is my best friend, they know how I like my coffee without me having to tell them or remind them, this person knows where I’ll go when I’m stressed out. This person understands me. This person has my back in battle I’ve charged into wars alongside them” and I feel like that’s just something that goes really deep.
I think Aura and Reyna say “girlfriend” because unlike Percabeth or Amara and Mateo they started their relationship in more of a romantic sense. There wasn’t as much as the best friend Phase so there’s not really that aspect that girlfriend doesn’t do it justice because that’s what they are to each other. They are two romantically involved individuals and that title fits for them. But It doesn’t do justice to some other relationships, I think Matteo and Amara sort of acknowledge that and that’s why they don’t call each other “girl/boy friend” because it’s more like that person is more than that to me and I don’t wanna put a label on it because there’s no label or title that will fit what we have accurately.
As for Mateo and Amara’s relationship, they don’t really discuss it. Mateo is secretly scared that if they actually initiate something then it’ll end up like a short high school kind of relationship. Mateo is pretty chill about physical affection, he knows others boundaries and has lax ones for himself. Amara on the other hand is the type of person to dramatically flop over someone. As I’ve said before SunDancer (Amara and Mateo’s ship name) is mostly an unspoken thing, they’ll hold hands some times, they don’t go out of their way to avoid flirting, they are always each others +1 to an event without even having to ask, heck they’re even kissed once or twice. (3 times to be exact but they almost had a 4th except Casey interrupted (are you surprised tho) their first kiss was after the Second Giant War. Mateo pulled Amara aside and told her how relieved he was that she was alive, Amara gave him a peck on the lips and they left it at that.)
