The Girls
âWell, how did tryouts go?â Mary asked Marlene as she walked off the field. She had her hair tied up and was wearing a blue bib that was soaked with sweat. She was breathing heavily but seemed really happy.
Â
âIt went so good! I charged through all the defences first try and scored a goal in the first like five minutes, then every time my team got the ball they would just pass it straight to me so I could get it in. Then James came up to me at the end to say that Iâd made the team!â
Â
âMarls, that's great! Iâm so happy you found something so quickâ Mary was smiling for her and Lily was stood next to her, smiling too.Â
Â
âYeah, itâs really good that youâre getting involved with stuff this early, it helps you adjust quicker when youâve got something in common with othersâ Lily said.Â
Â
âHey, Iâve gotta go sort something out but Marlene Iâm so happy for you, it sounds like you enjoyed it. Iâm gonna go so Iâll see you guys later, bye!â Remus said as he walked away back to the main building. Mary took Marleneâs and Lilyâs arms and started leading them back to the field to sit.Â
Â
âSooo, Marlene, have you seen anyone you think is hot?â Lily asked, Probably trying to get closer to Marlene.
Â
âWell earlier I saw this really fit girl, she had like dark skin and long black braids, and she was wearing loads of jewellery like rings and bracelets and earrings and stuffâ
Â
âOhh yeah, thatâs Dorcas. Sheâs really nice, trust me, if you wanted to talk to her I could probably set you up?â
Â
âReally? Damn who wouldâve thought people over here would be so nice to us? Thanks Lily!âÂ
Â
âItâs fine honestly, Iâm just glad you guys are settling in quicklyâ Just then, James, who had been running tryouts, ran over to the girls.
Â
âHey guys! Marlene, can I borrow you for a minute? I need to go over practice times with youâ
Â
âYeah sure, see you later guys!â she called out to Mary and Lily as she ran off, catching up with James.Â
Â
âDo you wanna go inside? Itâs getting kinda coldâ Lily suggested. Mary nodded and so they both got up and walked back towards the main building.Â
Â
âSo what about you then?â Lily asked as they were walking through the corridors.
Â
âWhat about me?â
Â
âHave you seen anyone you think is hot?â Mary thought of lying for a second but decided against it, and thought instead that she could have a bit of fun with this.
Â
âYeah, really hotâ
Â
âOh yeah? Who?â
Â
âI think you know exactly who Iâm on aboutâ Mary stopped Lily and stepped closer to her, closing the space between them. Lilyâs cheeks went slightly more red than they already were as she tried to avoid looking Mary in the eyes.Â
Â
âWell youâd be happy to know that Iâve seen someone recently who I think is hot tooâ Finally she looked up into Maryâs eyes. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Lilyâs gaze drifted to Maryâs lips, and Mary realised now just how close they were. She wasnât expecting to get this far straight away but was making the most of it while it lasted. Lily looked scared for a second, but then something changed in her eyes, there was something new in them. A spark that hadnât been there before. Then, wasting no time, she leaned in, her breath hitching as their lips met. Mary didnât know what to do for a second. She was confused and shocked, but also so very happy. At first the kiss was gentle, like they were testing the waters, but it quickly deepened as Mary responded, her hands reaching up to cup Lilyâs face. There was nothing around them except the buzz of electricity passing between them, the world faded away leaving just the two of them surrounded only by the warmth of the other.Â
Â
When they pulled away, Maryâs heart was racing. She opened her eyes to look at Lily, who was smiling up at her. After a minute of just looking at each other, not really knowing what to do, Mary was the first to speak.
Â
âIâve been waiting for that all afternoonâ Lily laughed, trying to keep herself together, but failing.
Â
âSo what happens now? Do we just go on with our day or is there something between us now?â
Â
Mary took Lilyâs hand in hers and gently rubbed the back of her hand with her thumb. She looked up, her eyes meeting Lilyâs again with a mix of hope and nerves.Â
Â
âLily,â she began, trying to keep her voice steady âwould you go out with me? Properly, like go on dates and hang around and talk all the timeâ Lilyâs cheeks went red again, a new look of joy in her eyes.Â
âYes,â She replied, her smile growing. âYes I would love toâ
Â
Mary sighed with relief as her face lit up. For a moment, they both just stood there, taking in the joy of the moment.Â
Â
âI shouldâve asked that before the kiss to be honestâ Mary added. Lily just laughed again, then said,
Â
âBetter late than neverâ and planted a light kiss on Maryâs lips. Then Lily started to walk away, a slight skip in her step, leaving Mary standing in the corridor still smiling. God, a lot can happen on the first day at school.
