All alone
When Evan returned from the library the other boys in the dorm where all asleep, he snuck in as quiet as possible and tried to get ready in silence but tripped on his way out of the bathroom knocking something over. From what he could tell everyone was still asleep but he could feel eyes on him. He made his way over to his bed acting as if he didn't. He was paranoid of something being there but he couldn't understand what, his tired paranoia was interrupted as he realised he was infront of Barty's bed about to get in, for the first time in forever Evan would be sleeping alone, in his own bed.
In first year Barty would wake up in the middle of the night from night terrors and Evan was never a good sleeper and sometimes would be awake when it happened, the first few times he was confused and lay watching as Barty tried to calm himself and would take out pieces of parchment that Evan would later find out were letters from his mother. Near the end of first year Barty woke and saw Evan watching him. "Sorry, was I being loud?" Barty spoke through broken breaths, it was strange as a more in character response would've been 'Tf you looking at?' Barty was a strange kind of weak when it came to sleep, Evan realised they all were and that's why there was so much comfort in sleeping around other people. "No," Evan found Barty was usually mumbling when he woke but nothing too disruptive if you were all ready asleep. "are you okay?"
"Fine, probably just nightmares, nothing special."
"Probably?" The lights were dim and it was hard to see but with what he could Evan could have sworn Barty's eyes were red and puffy. "Are you sure you're okay."
"I said I'm fine." This time Evan could really hear how shaken his breaths were. Evan wasn't really sure what he was doing but before he knew it he was up and walking to Barty's bed. "Evan? What're you doing?" Evan sat next to Barty's bed on the floor and grabbed his hand. "Evan?"
"Shhhh I'm here." Evan sat there stroking his hand for a good half an hour before going back to his bed as Barty had been asleep for around 10 minutes.
Around a week later Barty found himself standing and walking to Evan's bed but he stubbed his toe on the way and called out in pain. "Barty?" Evan rubbed his eyes.
"Sorry I didn't mean to wake you." That wasn't entirely true as he did want to wake him though he wasn't sure if he could muster up the courage to do so, it'd be rather selfish after all. "You okay? Why're you up?"
"I don't know." That wasn't entirely true either but he couldn't remember what exactly woke him just the feeling afterwards so it wasn't really lying either. Barty wasn't really sure what he wanted Evan to do but he was tired and stressed so couldn't really think it through. "There something I can do?"
"I don't know." Barty felt stupid standing there but he didn't know what else to do.
Evan pulled back the blanket on his bed and shuffled away from Barty. "Wake me if figure it out but no more yelling please."
"I screamed in my sleep again?" Barty's father would always got mad when he did that, it woke him from the other room but his mother would always comfort him.
"No, I mean not this time. I mean no more stubbing toes kind of yelling, you coming in or not?" Barty wasn't aware he'd been yelling at all as his father had said it had stopped, he was snapped back as he realised he'd been staring blankly and Evan's bed. "Uh... Okay." He got in and slept surprisingly well. The next time he got one he once again found his way into Evan's bed, Evan spoke soft, calm words, you never would have guessed from how he acted but Evan really was good at comforting with his words.
In the beginning of second year Evan just layed apon Barty's bed. "I'll be quicker to help this way." With his bed feeling safer with Evan next to him, the waking being easier with Evan to comfort him and the natural stop of night terrors that normally comes with age, they became uncommon by the current time, they were pretty rare by this point though not nonexistent.
Evan hadn't slept in his own bed since first year, it had all his stuff but that wasn't really his bed, his bed had always been Barty's, he'd always slept next to Barty, far before they dated, there was very little romantic or sexual about it, Barty had made jokes of course once they started dating but sleeping away from Barty was so much more than breaking up with or separating even as friends from Barty. Evan thought of lying next to Barty anyway, lying on the right side of Barty's bed, the side that Barty hadn't slept on since first year.
If Evan slept in his own bed it was like signing the divorce papers of their friendship, any hope of salvaging lost, all officially done. Evan looked between Barty's bed and his own. It took everything in him to back away from Barty's bed and go into his own one. There was one thought in his head that silenced all the others, one word, Felix.
Evan pulled back the covers and got into his bed. It was like being swallowed into the abyss. Like being dropped in the middle of the Artic Ocean, cold, confused and utterly alone. He felt like he'd jumped off a boat but instead of warm shores he was at the challenger deep with weights in his pockets and his limbs tied together, trying to blame the boat driver but he was the one to add the weights, get himself tied up and jump off the side.
He stared at the blank ceiling above, Barty had put a picture of a rose over his a year ago. Maybe Evan should go to his bed and take it off, maybe Barty would himself, Evan didn't deserve that kind of love. They could remove the picture but Barty carved his initials into his bed and put a spell on it that even a perfect student like Barty couldn't remove. Evan smiled as tears welled in his eyes, was it sad to have to loose love? Terribly, but it was all worth it to understand why it was such a shame to loose, to have felt it, to still feel it whether they can express it or not.
Evan wiped his eyes, how had he ever let himself get this sappy? Barty was just a stupid boy, they'd both get over it soon enough, it was teenage romance involving two boys who probably couldn't even give you a definition of love, Evan shouldn't care, there was nothing to care about loosing in that stupid relationship or that stupid boy.
