Specks of Gold

“Good evening there, just take a seat I’ll be with you in a moment.”

Remus was cleaning the eye examining equipment, opening a new file for the upcoming report, just standard procedure. He worked as an optometrist. Which sounds all fancy but in reality it was just across from the Hot Topic where Dorcas worked in a teenage apocalypse mall.

It payed well, but it was mostly middle aged people (who chose the ugliest frames in Remus’ opinion) plus the occasional worried mom and her little kid.

Today was different however.

Today it was someone who seemed to be Remus’ age.

And handsome.

Who was looking around the room curiously.

And handsome.

Shaking his, unprofessional, thoughts, Remus introduced himself, “Hey I’m Remus, what can I help you with?”

“Sirius. Hi there!” the handsome dude was very cheery, which normally made Remus cringe but for this guy it was...

“Just a standard checkup please. My eyesight has gotten a bit off now and it’s a requirement to renew my driver’s license.”

“Yep, right, just give me a moment.” Remus fumbled with the equipment, pulling it towards Sirius, that name felt right, and asked him to put his chin and forehead on the given slots.

“Can you see a hot air balloon?” Remus asked while adjusting the knob, to which he recieved a ‘yes’ from the man in front of him. “Okay... just blink a couple times.”

Sirius did as so and repeated for the other eye.

“Next, just read out the letters in front of you, I’ll show you different lenses for each and you tell me which is more comfortable.”

Sirius read out almost all of them perfectly, with the exception of some of the last slide.

“Almost done now, I just need to do a quick magnified view to see if there’s any visible issues.”

He pulled up a chair and looked into the scope, adjusting a light to see better.

And oh my god.

From a normal view, Sirius’ eyes looked gray.

But close-up, even without the scope, multiple colours bled together like something that was straight out of an Aurora Borealis.

Sirius was an accurate name for him, because the way the pigment ran through his irises matched the infrared images of astronomical nebulae.

Among the gray, which looked more silver now, ran streaks of a hundred shades of blue, outlining his pupil with a dazzling resemblance to the ocean. Hidden beneath the azure, he could see dashes of jade and fern green.

Realizing he might have been staring too long, Remus started actually searching his eyes for anything potentially harmful. Once done he moved to Sirius’ right. And god, was this one as hypnotizing as the other.

The same fields of metallic gray and sapphire blue strung together in perfect harmony, peaks of green peeking through. Again, no imperfections, even medical ones.

Before pulling away from the gadget, Remus noticed light specks of gold dotted around the bottom of his iris. Specks of gold that, in the artificial light of the eye equipment, danced and beamed up at Remus, almost inviting him.

“Is there something wrong?” Sirius suddenly spoke, driving Remus’ marvels away.

“Uhh, no! Just thought I saw something, but it’s nothing to be alarmed of. I also like to be thorough, you know, just in case...” he rambled as he moved the instrument away.

“Ohhh got it! I got worried for a second.” Sirius shrugged.

“No no, your eyes are perfectly healthy! Some strain, so maybe get a cheap pair of glasses for driving and reading. Just give me a few minutes to prepare your report and prescription and you’re good to go.” Remus was surprised how professional he sounded. “You can wait here, or outside if you wanna look and some frames.”

“I’ll wait here, if you don’t mind. I have a frame at home which I’ll get the lenses on.”

Remus replied with a curt nod, bending down a bit so he could type of his PC.

Remus’ phone dinged with a message from Dorcas sending him the location of a party their girlfriend was having.

He saw Sirius grinning out of the corner of his vision, typing furiously on his phone.

The printer whirred next to the screen, filling the comfortable silence the two boys found themselves in.

He handed the papers to Sirius just as he picked up a call, thought he didn’t miss to nod at Remus and say a very bright ‘thank you’.

“Hey, Marlene! Yes I’m definitely come tonight! I’ll bring Reg, too.” Remus heard from him as he quietly muttered ‘you have very pretty eyes’, glad it came out with such a low volume.

He cleaned the station and reset everything to it’s original place when—
