“SERIOUSLY, MY BEST FRIEND?! WHAT, YOU DONT HAVE ENOUGH ALREADY? YOU HAVE TO TAKE HIM TOO?” Sirius demanded angrily from a very guilty looking Regulus. James could tell by the way their faces were red that they were holding back tears.
“ITS NOT LIKE THAT!” Regulus argued, voice just as loud as his brother. “AND JAMES IS A PERSON THAT CAN MAKE HIS OWN DECISIONS! I DIDNT KIDNAP HIM, SIRIUS!” Tears were beginning to pour down his cheeks, blurring his vision. On one hand, James hated seeing Regulus cry, but on the other, he knew they both needed to either have this conversation—screaming match— now, or it would never happen.
“I CANT HAVE ANYTHING TO MYSELF CAN I?! MY WHOLE LIFE HAS REVOLVED AROUND YOU!KEEPING YOU SAFE, AND WHEN IM FINALLY FREE TO HAVE MY OWN FRIENDS, MY OWN LIFE YOU, HAD TO COME AND TAKE THAT TOO!”
Once Sirius finished, he was crying too. Regulus had gone quiet, only his sniffles and occasional hiccups filling the room.
If he’s honest with himself, James is feeling a bit awkward. Regulus, his boyfriend, is arguing with his brother, Sirius, who is James’s best friend.
James knew it was time to keep quiet once Sirius brought up their family life, and how the boy practically raised Regulus in their abusive household, but at this rate, he was going to have to pick a side, and he wasn’t sure if he could do that.
“Pads, don’t.” James admonished softly, even though he knew it was pointless trying to calm down Sirius when he was like this. He’d have better luck trying to boil the ocean.
“DONT ‘Pads’ ME, JAMES! YOU’RE SLEEPING WITH MY BROTHER, AND—“
Sirius seemed inconsolable at this point, his rage obvious, but behind it, heart break and betrayal, and James can’t help but feel a bit bad for going behind his back like this.
“SIRIUS I LOVE HIM!” James yells, getting the man’s attention. “I LOVE HIM SO MUCH SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE MY HEART WILL EXPLODE! YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND, AND YOU MEAN A LOT TO ME, BUT HE MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME! HE’S THE ONE PERSON I TRULY FEEL LIKE I CAN BE MYSELF AROUND WITHOUT HAVING TO HIDE ANYTHING! YOU MIGHT THINK ITS JUST SOME HOOK UP, BUT I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT ITS NOT. I KNOW THINGS ARE COMPLICATED RIGHT NOW, TRUST ME, I KNOW BUT PLEASE SIRIUS I CANT LET HIM GO!” He yelled louder than he had intended to, his voice cracking on the last word. Everything he had told Sirius was true, he was in love with Regulus even though he hadn’t told Regulus that yet. And he loved Sirius as well which is why he couldn’t choose, no matter how much was going on between the two brothers. They were both James’s world and he refused to let either of them go. Sirius looked stunned he had stopped crying and instead of looking angry he just looked confused. Regulus looked about the same except that while Sirius refused to make eye contact with him, Regulus was simply staring at his boyfriend.
“y-you, love him” Sirius said barley above a whisper.
“yes.” James said simply. There wasn’t anything else to say he loved Regulus Black.
Sirius turned to his brother “and Reggie do you-““yes.” Regulus cut him off, and again there was nothing more to say James loved Regulus and Regulus loved James.
“oh, okay.” Sirius said in a hushed whisper , and James had known him long enough to now that meant he was not okay and probably struggling to wrap his head around it.
“I need to get some air.” The older black said, and that meant: I need to get out of here before I start crying again.
Sirius left and now it was Regulus’s turn to cry “he hates me” he managed to say through sobs, “no he doesn’t, he just needs time to process it.”
“Are you sure.” He said looking up at James with those grey eyes that never failed to melt his heart.
“Yes darling, I’m sure. You’ve met Sirius, he feels everything so strongly he just needs time to work out his emotions but he’ll come around”
“And what you told him, did you… did you mean it?” The younger boy said shyly.
“Yes, I love you Regulus Black. I love you more than life itself and I will never ever stop loving you for as long and you’ll let me.” James has a habit of overthinking a lot of things in life but his love for Regulus has never, and will never be one of those things.
“I love you too James Potter.” He said with a smile, as James pulled him for a kiss. And that’s when he knew that no matter what happened with Sirius or with anyone else they would always have each other.
