she killed them all. splattered them across the walls, left the pavement soaked in dark red. she moved with a singular focus, determination and righteous anger rolling off her in waves. she had one goal, and they were not it. she would find him. peter would pay.

they were meant to go together. marlene’s parents didn't know about them, of course, but dorcas didn't mind. being with marlene, no matter the context, was enough for her. marlene was always enough for her.
not anymore.

when she found him, peter was not afraid. how silly of him, to not fear her wrath. to not know that she would be his end. how stupid, how foolish. she would kill him tonight. she would avenge her love.
it was the only thing she could do.

marlene mckinnon died on a random tuesday. the world did not stop spinning, the sun still shone, the stars still twinkled. dorcas was sure it should have. how could it not, when all that was good and bold in the world had died? she thought that she should have felt it, intrinsically. should have known, deep down that something was wrong. and yet, when she returned home to find a trembling mary, she had not expected the news. how did she not know?

peter was easy to get rid of. he babbled and pleaded, then bragged before returning to begging. he revealed many secrets. that's the issue with having a mole - they do anything to preserve their own skin. she killed him slowly, painfully. she enjoyed it. he would suffer for what he had done. and just before he died, he told her where He was. she knew where her anger was aimed next. she would end this bloody war.

they fought all the time. mainly about the war. about how dorcas refused to fight, to be a pawn in someone else’s pointless game. this isn't our fight, she would say. you all are gonna get fucking killed one day, she would yell.
she just wasn't prepared for it to happen.

when she found Him, she thought it would end well. she knew her magic outweighed His. yet, the fight was not going well. He should be dead. but for some unfathomable reason He was not. she knew logically she should be able to endure what He threw at her, should be able to outlast Him. and yet, he was still alive.
how?

when they weren’t fighting, they were all over each other. their love a real, tangible thing felt in the air between them. she swore she could recognise marlene by touch alone, by smell; she would know her blind. she would know the other woman in death, at the end of the world.
except that's not true, is it? there is nothing beyond death.

dorcas meadows died on a random thursday evening. the world did not stop spinning, the sun continued to shine, the stars continued to twinkle. her death did not achieve anything. nobody was avenged. she was just another number, another piece on a larger chess board.
