the beginning
I stood in front of the address. Confused on what I was seeing. There was a for-sale sign in front of the house. I decided to knock on the door. I started to walk up the path to the front door. The yard was not being taken care of and the house looked almost abandoned. The house was covered in gray bricks. The windows looked not well maintained.
I was at the front of the door. I was scared to knock. Where was that Gryffindor bravery I always used to have? I signed in almost defeat. No, no way I was going to quit. I have been looking for them for too long to give up.
I knocked on the door.
My heart was beating so fast I couldn’t barely hear. I stood there for what felt like forever. Nobody came. I knocked again on the door, harder.
Nobody answered. I was lost. Again. I signed and looked at the ground. This was my last lead to them and now I have nothing. I turned around. I walked to the sidewalk. I saw the mailman about to drive by. He yelled out to me.
“Miss, are you interested in that home?” The man said.
“Oh no, i’m looking for.. a friend.” I said, trying not to be sad.
“Are you looking for the Wilkins?”
“Yes I am. Do you know where they are? They didn’t answer the door when I knocked." I looked at him. He looked like he was sad or something, I couldn't really tell.
“Miss, the Wilkins passed away 2 months ago.” He must have been confusing my parents to someone else. It was impossible for them to be dead. I did everything in my power to make sure they weren’t dead.
“Is this some type of messed up joke you do here in Australia? It isn't funny. Now please tell me where they actually are." I said in a demanding voice. He looked uncomfortable.
“Ma'am, I'm not joking. I'm sorry for your loss.” he looked down in his car seat. There were tears in my eyes. No. They can’t be dead. I hid them, took away their memories to save them. I started to cry. I took a breath.
“Um, sir. Do you know how they died?” I felt sick saying those words.
“Actually I do. They died in a car crash. It was on the main road. Some truck didn’t see the red light and crashed right into them.”
“Oh, um, thank you for telling me. I must get going. Thank you for informing me.” I said, trying to pull a smile on my face with the tears on my cheeks.
“Again, I'm sorry for your loss and sorry about having to be the one that told you of their death. I have to get back to work. You have a good day and get back home safe.” he said uncomfortably. He smiled and drove off in a rush.
