Sirius the star

March 7, 2022 Monday 3:57 PM

Remus and Sirius had agreed on a Zoom call at 4 pm. Remus was not sure what he was supposed to say or what would be discussed and if he was being honest, he was fucking scared. Talking to James had been less stressful as it had been a talk about his book, and he knew how to get through that conversation, but art? Remus has no knowledge of art besides that some things just look pretty. All the knowledge he had of art was from whatever he learned about the Renaissance many years ago, but knowing some art history and knowing art are two different things. He was pulled out of his thoughts when his laptop alerted him of a new email, it was the invite to join the Zoom call. All Remus can hope for is to not make a fool of himself.

It turns out that might be a hard thing to do. Sirius was hot; scratch that, he was fucking gorgeous. He has curly black hair that reaches his shoulder, what looks to be gray eyes, and a nose piercing. Sirius was gorgeous, and Remus knew he knew because no one who looked like that wouldn't know.

“You must be Remus; nice to meet you,” Sirius greeted, after a beat of silence. “I’m Sirius, but I'm sure that was obvious!” Sirius was starting to sound a bit like James. Was that a good thing? He wasn’t sure yet.

“Nice to meet you,” Remus said because that was all he was able to say.

“You have an uncommon name, Remus,” Sirius stated, followed by a small laugh.

“I can say the same about you, Mr. Dog Star,” Remus said, raising an eyebrow. He was aware of the peculiarity of his name and had grown up to despise it.

“Oh, he knows his stars!” Sirius exclaimed.

“Well, Sirius was a big part of my book,” Remus explained.

“Oh, was it now?” Sirius asked. “I haven't had the time to read it; sorry about that.”

“It's okay,” Remus said, with a small smile. “I wouldn't have expected you to read it on such short notice.”

“Right,” Sirius says, and then tilts his head to the side and looks away from the screen, thinking for a moment, and then he looks straight at the camera again and claps his hands together. “Why don’t I email you some of my art? That way you can see if you’d like to work with me.” Sirius says, speaking two times faster than he had been before.

“If not—” Sirius’ voice slows down; he stops, shakes his head, and continues again at a normal speed. “Then we can find you another artist!”

“Okay,” Remus answers. Not exactly sure what else there is to say.

“Great, give me a second,” Sirius says, smiling at him.

Remus nodded his head to let him know he heard him. Sirius is a lot like James, Remus thinks. They both talked a lot and had more energy than Remus had ever had. He wondered if they were friends.

“The email has been sent,” Sirius says, bringing him back from his thoughts.

“Oh, alright.” He gives Sirius a weak smile.

The art Sirius had sent him was beautiful; Remus may not know much about art, but he didn’t need to know a whole lot about it to know Sirius’ drawings were amazing.

“This is beautiful,” Remus said, still looking at the drawings. ”How much do you charge for a commission?” Remus said, looking up at the screen.

“600 pounds to 1,600 pounds, depending on the amount of details you would like,” Sirius explained. “Do you have a budget?

“Anything between 1,000 pounds and 1,500 pounds,” Remus said. His original budget was actually much lower, but right now that was out the window.

Sirius nodded, “Do you have anything already planned for the cover?”

“Uh, no,” Remus chuckled.

“That’s fine!” Sirius exclaimed, “We can do two things: I can give you a few days to plan something, or you can tell me about your book, and I’ll see what I come up with.”

Remus took a moment to think; he had no plan for the cover. Maybe Lily can think of something, but if he was being honest, he would rather see what Sirius thought of his book.

“Can we see what you come up with?” Remus asked.

“Sure!” He said, excited. “Here’s the plan then: I'll ask you a few questions about your book, we’ll plan another meeting in a month, and I can present you with a few sketches of what I come up with, and you'll pick which one you like best.”

“That sounds great,” Remus nodded.

“Okay, would you like to tell me about your book?” Sirius asked.

The question was so simple and expected, but for some reason, Remus had not expected it.

“Well, it’s about these two boys who run away from their homes; they are both sick.”

“Sick?” Sirius asks.

“Terminal illness—they don't have much time left, and they both know it,” he explained.

“Why did they run?”

“Better than seeing their family's sad faces until the day they die,” Remus explained, shrugging.

“So what does Sirius have to do with it?” Sirius asks, raising an eyebrow.

“It’s the only star they know.” Remus let out a small laugh, “It gives them a sense of hope, I suppose.”

“Hope?”

In the end, they talked for an hour. Remus got Sirius's phone number in case he did come up with an idea for the book cover—which was not very likely. If he didn’t come up with an idea in a month or so from now, Sirius would send some sketches

Whether or not Remus made a fool of himself was up for debate. He caught himself staring at Sirius a few times. He is sure Sirius noticed at least once.
