The music of grief
Summary
The magic hums around him but it sings when he plays. Even if he’s crying.

He felt the magic singing when picked the instrument up. It always hummed around him, but it sang when he played. Slowly he lifted the violin up to his chin, lifting his boy and played. A scene formed around him, a boy dancing in the street, his sister’s wild ginger hair flying out behind her as she joined in. The lively tune faded away, leaving the player smiling softly. Quickly he packed his instrument away and left the room, missing the grey eyes watching him.

He had no time to play over the next few days. Oliver had scheduled Quidditch practice almost constantly so he was busy but eventually Oliver was hit with a badly aimed Bludger from Fred and was out of commission for a week. “What was that for Fred!!?? We have a match in two weeks!” Cried Angelina throwing up her arms in annoyance. Fred winced, “something shot past me.” Angelina nodded unbelievingly and George shrugged, “I have time for homework now don’t I.” Katie nodded and the chasers flew off as Fred and George wrestled the Bludgers into the crate.  “Go on little Harrikins, we’ll go it.” The boy smiled and he flew to the changing wordlessly flicking his wand to swap over his Quidditch robes to his playing clothes: a deep magenta shirt and navy trousers, today there would be a concert. Pulling his invisibility cloak off his violin case he flung it on himself knowing Fred and George would take his broom to the common room without question. Quickly he hurried to the room where he played, locking and soundproofing the room. The magic around him calmed slightly as he lifted his bow and placed it on his strings. The magic hummed and he glanced at the corner where he could see the slight shimmer of cloaking charm. He ignored it, whoever was behind there would get a show. He began to play crafting a wonderful scene of a girl dancing on a stage while a solo violinist played, to his surprise a second instrument entered the song and he adapted the tune as the second violin took over the part of the violinist and he played the dancer. The instruments bounced off each other and finally the dancer bowed and the second violin finished with a flourish. “Step out now, I saw your cloaking take it down.” There was a chuckle and the shimmer of the spell dropped revealing someone rather unexpected. Draco Malfoy. “Potter, you really are full of surprises.” Harry blinked and clutched his violin closer to his chest. “Relax Potter, I’m not going to do anything except take you to McGonagall. She’ll want to see us.” Harry stared then quickly packed his violin back in its case and stood up. “Why??” Draco smiled slightly, “I would say trust me but that seems a bit far fetched, so just follow me.” Cautiously Harry did one hand on his case, the other on his wand. The invisibility cloak was wrapped around the case but Draco avoided it subconsciously like he was used to walking around other people’s cases. “Potter, Malfoy, out after curfew that will be-“ Draco interrupted Filche’s gleeful chuckle. “We have a note from Professor McGonagall, nice try.” The caretaker grumbled and Draco pushed Harry forward, pausing at the boy’s flinch. “Relax Potter.” Harry nodded but his hand clenched on his case handle. “In here.” Draco dragged him through a tapestry and into a large room. Professor McGonagall stood in a corner next to Professor Snape both looked slightly surprised. “Professors?” Harry’s question snapped their attention to him properly. “We have monitoring wards for music all around the castle, your playing set them off. We’re here to see you play, then we shall decide.” Draco stepped to side of the room and Harry looked around. Usually he had something to base his music off. His eyes fell on Snape and he smiled slightly and raised his bow.
The piece was slow in the bottom notes of the violin.

A haze fell across the room, a dark room, a candle set on the desk. The pace picked up slightly, a man walked into the room and pulled out a violin and began to play. The minor notes lifted and waved slightly then Harry ploughed forward, the scene changed slightly, a dark room, two boys sitting entwined in a corner. One was crying and a third child, a girl this time knelt at the crying boy’s side. The piece faltered and Harry placed his bow dowm, his shoulders shaking as he cried. “Harry, Oh Harry.” To Draco’s surprise Severus gently laid aside the boy’s instrument as he crumpled, “I miss him, so much.” Minerva glanced at Draco and they both left the room leaving the pair to finally properly grieve for their friends.
