Holding on for dear life
James, Regulus, and Remus all somewhat slept in the same room as Sirius. James sat in a chair closest to the bed, Remus and Regulus sitting on the spare bed Effie conjured up.
Regulus had passed out and Sirius was getting better, Remus and James were not so fortunate. Well they wouldn't say fortunate, Regulus woke up panting Sirius' name in a panic. Sirius' body spasmed and he murmured things that didn't make sense.
Well, to Regulus they made sense.
Sometime during the night, no one really knows what time it was, but Sirius' condition dropped tremendously. It had happened at the same time Regulus woke up screaming.
James didn't expect it, Sirius was supposed to be getting better. He had screamed for his mom, Remus had to pry him off Sirius' body long enough for Effie to work.
It was a horror show, he had never heard Sirius scream like it. He couldn't look away, he could vaguely see Remus literally hiding Regulus from seeing, he caught a glimpse at the pure terror on their faces as Effie worked to figure out what was wrong.
He doesn't know when, but effie had closed her eyes and connected her hands to Sirius' head. He doesn't know what magic she's using, but Sirius stopped screaming, even though his screams echo in James ears.
He felt anger spike, he could feel it bubble up. He had felt murderous. How dare they? How dare they make Sirius feel pain like that. James has never felt anger like this before, it didn't feel good. James just wanted his best friend, what did Sirius do to deserve this?
Those screams still echoed in his ears, they echoed and echoed, and still echoed when Sirius eyes opened and flung himself up.
They still echoed but James moved anyways, Sirius was frantic and confused, he needed James. James sat down on the bed and put his hands on Sirius' cheeks to force him to look.
"Padfoot! Pads! Sirius! It's me, James! Calm down," James said, looking directly at Sirius. James' eyes started to mist over and tears welled up in his eyes as he watched Sirius recognize him and deflate in relief.
Tears rolled down his cheeks unfortunately, they wouldn't stop, he could see the same tears roll down Sirius' face onto James' hands.
James didn't care, he had his best friend back. "Prongs, your here" Sirius croaked, grabbing onto James wrists to steady himself, like he was holding on for his life, like if he let go of James life would lose meaning, like James could keep him afloat by just being there, James didn't mind, the touch was welcomed.
James had the overwhelming urge to be as close to Sirius as he could be. But Sirius had just woken out of a mini coma, it was to soon.
"Of course i'm here, idiot. Where else would i be?" James grinned cheekily through tears. The next tears James saw from Sirius were from relief and joy, and he nearly toppled the two of them over the other edge of the bed when Sirius pulled James into a bone crushing hug.
He was home.
James was home, right where he belongs, the safest place in the universe, in the arms of the person that spreads warmth throughout his soul, in the arms of his love.
Sirius had James in a death grip, James didn't care, he held Sirius as tight as he could without hurting him. When Sirius pulled away they were both crying, he watched Sirius' eyes drift to the other two in the room.
He watched Sirius eyes light up and fill with more relief, he helped Sirius scrambled out of bed, just for Sirius to launch himself at Regulus, and Regulus for all his hardwork in keeping his emotions check, couldn't not cry.
Sirius grasped at his brothers clothes and pulled him as close as possible to his chest, Regulus was in the same state, opening crying into his brothers chest. Like a chasm opened in his chest only his brother could fill.
After a moment, Sirius grabbed James by the collar and Regulus grabbed Remus by his sleeve and dragged them into the hug as well.
It was one big hug of relief, tears, and joy, Remus, for how upset he was at Sirius, couldn't help but feel immense relief his friend was awake.
...
After many many hugs from Effie and Flea, tears fell that day, a family was reunited.
Sirius couldn't believe this, he was back in the arms of people who he trusted whole heartily.
