‘’-If that's how you feel, then why are we even doing this?’’
The air in the hallway felt like it stilled as Draco stopped at the door of the empty classroom. Snape had sent him to get a textbook, but that could wait. The sound of Harry Potter yelling was more intriguing than any textbook.
‘’I don't know,’’ Another voice said quietly, disgruntled. Draco recognized it as Ron Weasley, one of Harry's friends and a third of their little trio. For a moment he wondered where Hermione was. ‘’You started this, Harry.’’
A deep sigh. Draco creeped closer to the door, managing to take a peek through the small glass window. Harry Potter was sitting on a desk, arms folded as he glared at ron. Ron was standing in front of him, very close, brows furrowed. What were they arguing about?
‘’Alright,’’ Harry relented. His eyes swept across the room, and Draco had to duck quickly to avoid being caught. His hand flinched to the wand in his pocket, ready to react if either of them opened the door and discovered him. But after a moment, Harry continued, whatever distraction had caught his eye apparently gone. ‘’I have to go. Snape still wants me to polish those goddamn trophies. I’ll see you later.’’
Draco could hear him standing up, footsteps echoing as he walked to the door. Shit. frantically looking around, he almost audibly sighed in relief when a supply closet door caught his eye. Quickly stepping in, he closed the door, pressing his ear to it.
‘’See you later, Harry,’’ he could hear Ron say from the classroom door. Then, from right in front of him, harry. ‘’Bye, ron. Love you.’’
The hallway echoed with footsteps as the boys parted ways, walking away from each other. Oblivious to Draco in the closet, who’s mind was reeling. ‘Love you?’ Since when did- Holy shit.
There were rumors, of course. Some small whispers about the nature of Ron Weasley and Harry Potter's friendship. They were close, closer than a lot of people. But it was also well-known that Ron and Hermoine Granger had something going on. He had been seething the entire night of the yule ball when she went with someone else. But what if that was just a cover up? What if the whispers were right? What if Ron and Harry were a couple?
Draco’s chest clenched as he thought about it. It made enough sense, and the argument, plus the ‘love you’ basically solidified it. He waited until he couldn't anymore before racing out of the closet and down the hall, snapes errand forgotten.
The portrait must have sensed his distress as he approached it, because it didn't give him as much shit as it usually did, letting him in after a mumbled password. The common room was busy, filled to the brim with Slytherins playing chess or studying or talking with their friends. He ignored the sound of pansy calling his name, walking up the stairs to his dorm room. Crabbe and goyle were in the room, studying. Their NEWTs were coming up soon. Draco wasn't worried, but he wasn't stupid either. He might be one of the smartest in the year, second only to Hermione Granger, but he still studied. His friends looked up as he entered the room, waving a hello. Crabbe did a double take, frowning at his expression. ‘’What happened? I thought you were talking to snape about your potions project?’’
Draco hesitated. For some reason, he wouldn't tell them about what he overheard. He wanted to keep this to himself. ‘’Nothing. Just got tired.’’
Crabbe nodded, turning back to goyle. Their voices faded into nothingness as Draco walked to his bed, slipping behind the curtain and casting a silencing spell. Not bothering to change out of his robes, he laid down, curling up under the blankets. It didn't take long for him to fall asleep, slipping into dreams of Harry Potter and whispered ‘Love you’s’.
