This charade was going on for a week now. It was a real wonder that it lasted even this long, because Barty was at his fucking limit. Each day he woke up dreading the new horrors the evil Rosier twin would present to Barty. He’d been subjected to sitting next to Evan in lunch each day, and each day his wish to kill himself grew stronger. The comment that Evan had made stuck to him, seeing as Regulus was laughing and smiling with James. With Barty, he was all sarcasm and hard edges.
Barty stood outside the school, waiting for Pandora, and by association, Evan, to arrive. They were both deep in conversation, hands flailing as they spoke. One thing about the Rosier twins was that they were both extremely expressive. Barty sighed, waiting for them to cross the lot, when Evan caught his eyes. He half-smiled, something that Barty didn’t reciprocate. Seeing this, Evan quickened his pace, and beckoned Pandora to do the same. Within seconds, Evan’s arms were around his neck.
‘Regulus is looking.’ Evan whispered. Barty hugged Evan back.
‘Is he still watching?’ He felt Evan laugh against him.
‘You could just turn, you know.’ Evan let go of him, and Barty turned around to see no sight of Regulus. Oh, he hated Evan’s guts.
‘Young love is so beautiful to watch.’ Pandora said dreamily. If he wasn’t being held captive in this fake relationship, Barty would have disagreed with her.
‘Good morning to you too, Pan.’ She smiled at him brightly. ‘Class?’ The twins nodded.
‘Well, I should get going. I have to borrow a book from the library before I get to class.’
‘We could come with you!’ Barty said too eagerly.
‘No, I can’t eat into your time with Evan. That’s selfish of me.’ Barty shook his head.
‘I insist.’ Pandora gave him a look that communicated something Barty couldn’t decode.
‘Barty, I’m getting late.’ Evan was pouting, and Barty wanted to smack him across the face.
‘We have the same class, Ev," He gritted his teeth as he spoke. Evan tilted his head, grinning.
‘Silly me, guess I forgot. More reason to be on time, huh?’ Barty looked from Evan to Pandora. They had the same expression on their face, which made this whole ordeal more infuriating.
‘I suppose we can go now. Goodbye, Pandora, I’ll see you at lunch.’ He shot her one last pleading look, which she disregarded. Before she could say anything, Evan hooked a finger in his collar, pulling him along.
‘I fucking hate you.’ Evan yawned.
‘News to me.’ Evan smoothed out the collar of Barty’s shirt. ‘Stick around for a few more weeks, and then you’re free.’
‘I would much rather wash my face in a volcano.’
‘Ouch. Surely I’m not that bad.’
‘The worst.’
‘Go back to Regulus then. Oh, wait, oops. You lost your chance, loverboy.’
‘Fuck you.’ Barty spat.
‘Take me out first, sweetheart, and maybe then I’ll consider.’
