Birds to Metal

Minerva stretched her arms above her head. her chest under the blanket, her wavy brown hair down the shoulders and back.

She was just cracking her neck, as she saw Poppy.
"How long did i sleep? And why do my bones feel so strange?"
Minerva asked worried the girl at her bedside. Poppy just wondered if she should turn around, but she really didn´t want to.

"its Sunday morning. You slept the entire night, we had to give you some medication to sleep, a few of your ribs and your hip was broken, That's what the bandages were for."
... "You must have woken up one time, to take your ponytail out. Don´t you remember that?"

Minerva blinked slowly. To much information at once. She looked like she had a bad headache. Minerva leaned forward and took her face in hoth hands.

"Now that you say... i do remember that." she said muffled. "So your telling me you gave me pain medication and i still feel like I´ve been through a meat grinder?"
"Yes, you needed like fourteen pils to drop." Poppy felt really guilty, because Minerva didn't feel well.

"Bloody hell, maby switch to a better pills." She laughed cynicaly "Sorry, that was mean, i know you don´t actually work here." Then she took a pause and looked up. "Where you here tho whole night?" Suddenly she looked concerned.
"Yes" Poppy answered.
"Well that shouldn´t be your job!" Minerva looked tired. "Where is Madam Melrose?" she rubbed the bridge of her nose. The headgirl was back.
"I dont know. But she´ll be here soon." Poppy promissed without really knowing. "In the meantime... How is your hip?"
"Honestly fine, don´t feel like it was broken at all. but all of my bones feel really heavy."
"Ok. Do you think you could get up?"
Minerva tested. "I think so" Minerva was obviously surprised by the younger girl taking an approach to the situation.

"Then i´ll go and get you something to eat and meanwhile you can dress, If Madam Melrose isn´t here by then i´ll go look for her."
Minerva nodded, she semingly had no further questions. Poppy pointed at her clothes magicaly cleaned, and layed out for her the night before on her bedsidetable.

She closes the curtains as she left Minerva's side. As Poppy turned around Felix was gesturing toward her from his bed, silently asking if his friend was all right. She quietly shrugged and gestured back that she was generaly fine but she also didn´t really know.

She made porridge for Minerva, before she entered the curtains again she loudly asked if Minerva was dressed.
"Yes, as if that matters anymore." Minerva layed on the bed above the covers, in the cloths she wore under her quidditch robe. "I mean, you already saw me."
she casually answered. "Well that was an emergency, it's different when somebody freely chooses to."
"Your right of course." Minerva admitted, indicating that she didn't really mean it earlier. She twisted her back, probably trying to crack it.

Poppy put the bowl on the girls bedside table. "Are you all right?"
Minerva stopped: "I feel like my lower back wants to be cracked but it just doesn´t" Minerva said frustrated.
Poppy was exited finaly something she could do. "I know a spell for that!"
"Please do it." Poppy stepped closer. "please lay on your stomach." Minerva did so imediately

Poppy pointed her wand at Minervas lower back, she mumbled "crepita!" and quickly turnd her wrist from the inside out, as if to breack a piece of chocolate from a bar.
Then she heard a loud crack. And Minerva audibly breathed out. "Bloody hell" she sat back up. And stretches visibely relived. "Good heavens! You´ll have to teach me that!"
"If you want to." A little joy danced in her chest. "But maby later, your porridge gets cold."
"Oh yes, thank you so much, Poppy" Poppy felt her cheeks getting red. She knew her name. The young nurse turned to leave.

"Youve been studying at night?" Poppy turned back to the girl sittnig cross-legged on the bed now. She was pointing with her spoon at Poppys backpack and the transfigurations book that she layes on it, when she abandoned it last night.
"Yeah, we have a test tomorrow. But i didn´t get much done." Poppy frowned as it came back to her. "Its not really my strong suit. im kind of stressed out about it." She admitted.

"Well, its my strongsuit. Tell me about this test." Maby the food or the topic changed her mood or both but Minerva suddenly was in a way more realaxed than before. Happy about the mood change Poppy sat down in the chair she had spend the previous night in.

"On Monday Professor Dumbledore will give us a bird of some kind..." she opened her pony tail, looking at the floor, "... and then well have to turn it into a kind of metal object." She put her hair back up and checkt it´s order in the reflection of the window. A tired girl looked back.

Minerva continued eating, thinking loudly. "Does he give you a desired object or should it just be metal?"
"Yes i think it can by anything as long as its metal."
"Any metal?" Minerva continued eating, exited about a task she could help with.
"I guess?" Poppy hadn´t really thought about it jet and started to panic.

"Allright, you have to kow some birds turn easyer into certain metals than others." Minerva started.
"What?" Poppy asked utterly confused.
"Yeah, its amazing!" Minerva said with a big smile, then realised that Poppy didn´t share her exitement. She wiped her smile away. "Dont worry, they can be sorted into groups."
Poppy nodded and got a piece of partchment out.

"I dont remember Dumbledore talking about this." Poppy said while searched for her fountain pen.
"Of course not. He obviously wants you to learn all the variations. But i think thats not gonna happen till tomorrow." MInerva smiled understandingly.

"So what are the categories?" Poppy already wrote down : Birds to metal.
"So you have birds of prey like owls, eagles, falcons and such they turn into gold easily." She listes on her fingers and looked on the ceiling as she continued: "colorfull and, or loud brids turn into brass nicely. Like canaries, birds of paradise... if it sings: brass."
She looked back down and gave Poppy a chance to write it down.

"And anything plain like... a pigeon, a raven, a sparrow: do copper... and" She ran her hand through her hair in thought. "for swimming birds like ducks and swans do tin." She put the empty bowl to the side.
Poppy looked at her amazed. "Remember it by thinking: Hunters are the kings in gold, the musicians and dancers need their brass, the paupers want the pennies, and a tin can floats on water."
Poppy stared at the ceiling and repeated. She got it all right.

"And i don´t think he will give you a ostrich or a penguin." She laughed "He isn´t that mean."

"Oh my God! I forgot to give you something!" Poppy remembered the black pocean she was supposed to give her, when she woke up.
"But i feel fine now. My bones seem to get lighter." Minerva smiled. "I´ll go get it!" Poppy stood up and got the bottle. While she exited the she saw the girl from the day before entering the Hospital wing. The one that helped with the saving of Minerva.
"Jenny!" The red haired girl walked towards her at the greeting.

"How is she?" Jenny asked concerned. Poppy waved her hand dismissingly: "Fine! Shes helping me with Transfigurations right now."
Jenny clapped her hands together, smiling brightly: "Typical."

As Jenny entered Poppy went to get the bottle. On the back she read that it was a pain medication that got people to sleep. Poppy thought that wouldn´t be necessary and put it back happily.

She went over to Felix because she didnt want to interupt the visit.
"Open up!" She comanded mocking a dentist. He did with a smile. "Looks good. Nose also feeling allright?"
"Yes. All in right order again doctor." She slapped her thighs as she stood up. "Well then Mister, I think your good to go. I´ll go get your curtains to change."
She closed the view around his bed for his privacy and returned to the gryffindor girls.

"Thank you, I was practicaly blind the entire morning."
Jenny apparently brought Minerva her glasses. "False alarm with the medicine. You´ll live." Poppy said.

"Thought so too." Minerva answered.
"And it would be a real shame if you missed the Pomonas Birthday. I already finished the costumes!"
"Well i would have turned up dead. Are you going there too, Poppy?"
"Whose Birthday."
"Pomona Sprout, shes a Hufflepuff 5th year. Shes doing a big costume Party in their common room. It will be great, I´ve never been to any other common rooms. I wonder if the magic even lets us in. Pomona said anyone, in costume, is very welcome."
Jenny was definitely very exited.
"Anyone?" Tht sounded like great fun.
"Anyone! Its tomorrow night. She turns 16 that night."
"Are you guys talking about the Hufflepuff party?" Felix stuck his head inside. "Yes, are you coming too?"
"You Bet! I already have a costume." He now stood beside them fully dressed his tie undone, in his usual fashion.
"May I suggest that we all turn up together?" Minerva asked.

"Yeah definitely! Lets meet at like ten in our common room, and then go together!" Jenny suggested
"No let´s meet at the wizard fashion fountain. Then Poppy won´t have to walk that far just to walk somewere else again!" Minerva threw in.

"You want to come, dont you?" She asked. "Yeah definitely." Poppy played it very casualy, but she was burning to tell Irma about it. "I´ll bring my friend if thats cool."
"Anyone!" Jenny declared. Felix and Minerva gave each other an amused look about it.

"When can she go now?" Jenny asked clinging dramaticaly to her bestfriends arm.
Poppy wanted to answer, that she could go now. But Minerva did it before her. "when she knows all about turning birds into metal objects."

Jenny laughed: "I worried about you. Your impossible!"
Felix turned to Poppy: "With her teaching, we´ll see you two at lunch." He smired and left with Jenny.

"So are you good at any particular object?" Minerva continued without missing a beat.
