Fractured Alliances
We had been running for three hours. I had no idea where we were heading, and from the look on Hermione's face, neither did she. We'd stop every now and then for water, but neither of us had spoken a word since our escape. Finally, I spotted a clearing that could work as a camp, though I use that term loosely.
We both collapsed to the ground. I could hear Hermione's labored breathing matching my own as we struggled to catch our breath. The silence stretched between us—ten minutes that felt like hours, filled with nothing but our desperate gasps and distant birdsong.
I noticed Hermione watching me from the corner of her eye. I could tell she didn't fully trust me—not that I blamed her—but we both knew she had no other choice right now. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
"Why'd you do it? You had it all with Draco and those guys. Why?" She swallowed hard. "They're going to kill you now."
I couldn't answer right away, still trying to steady my breathing. When I finally found my voice, it came out hoarse. "That was going to happen either way." I met her gaze. "And you know why."
I watched confusion cloud her features as she studied my face. I could see her trying to piece it together, to understand what I meant, but the answer seemed to elude her.
"This isn't the best spot for camping out," she said abruptly, pushing herself to her feet. "Let's try and rest for an hour and then move."
I could see the irritation in every movement as she started to walk past me. Without thinking, I reached out, my fingers gently catching her arm. "I need you to know..." I kept my voice soft but couldn't hide the intensity. "That stuff with Draco... I did it to guarantee your safety for as long as I could."
Her eyes dropped to where my hand rested on her arm. Our gazes met for a fleeting moment, and I felt the weight of everything unsaid between us. Then she pulled away, her voice suddenly matter-of-fact despite the tension in the air. "I have to pee."
The unexpected declaration caught me off guard, and I felt the heavy atmosphere crack just slightly, bringing a small sense of normalcy to our chaos.
