Chapter 2
You shouldn't be doing this, Regulus told himself as he walked to the corridor that they always met in. You're going to get your heart broken. I won't let him have it. But he already does.
He wondered why James was being so vulnerable with him, when, aside from their meetings, the only things he got back were emotionless words and hard stares. They were the only things Regulus could afford to give. 'Being straight' gave him an advantage in his parent's eyes, and he couldn't jeopardize his position in his family, despite how much he hated them.
He needed to stop thinking about his family. James was walking down the corridor. "James," Regulus greeted a little too softly for his liking.
"Cut it. Lying is a terrible look on you," James told him.
Where did that come from?
"Have you had a bad day?" Regulus asked, trying not to let on how blindsided he was.
"Don't act like you care, Regulus," James replied, leaning against the wall, "Listen, I only came to tell you I'm done with this."
"What do you mean?" Regulus questioned, coldly.
"This shouldn't have happened. Not like this. I've liked you since before we started hooking up, but I know that I'm just a toy to you. So go fuck someone else, because I'm done pretending that this is enough, and I'd rather have nothing than be involved in this shit."
James turned on his heel and walked away, not giving him a chance to speak. Regulus could feel his stomach turning as the words ran through his mind.
'Just a toy to you.'
Regulus almost stopped him, but he couldn't. He still wasn't even sure that this wasn't some sick game, and no matter what it was, it couldn’t be worth it. It felt like nothing, the next time he brought someone to bed. But he refused to talk to James first. He couldn't afford to.
