3. Goblins, Gold and Revelations (Part 2)
The Goblin’s had divulged into a conversation in a language that only they seemed to understand, Gobbledegook, if Harry remembered correctly. They continued to chatter to one another as they set out more parchments on the table, along with two separate folders, each with a different crest on top of it.
“What are those?” Lyra whispered to him quietly, looking to him for answers. Harry gave her an awkward half smile and shrugged a little.
“Folders, I assume.” Harry tried to joke, voice just as quiet as hers. He could see in her eyes, almost identical to his own, that wasn’t the answer she wanted but she seemed to accept it for now.
“Peverell and Potter, two names tied together in one family and although still tied the titles are finally bestowed to two instead of one. It’s been too many generations since that has happened, and for the Peverell line to choose an heir in a young lady…I am truly surprised and delighted to see it." The new Goblin had rattled from his seat as he looked at Harry and Lyra hungrilly, it set Harry off a little and he moved himself to be a little closer to Lyra in his seat.
“It doesn’t often choose girls?” Lyra’s curious voice asked, Harry reached over and gently squeezed her hand to keep her from going on a tangent of questions. One thing he remembered from his first and only visit to the bank was that Goblin’s had little patience.
“Most lines prefer males as they can carry on the family name. However, there are some that do not mind and some that prioritise females or there are some that prioritise magical gifts,” the Goblin explained. “I’m Sharpknife, the Peverell Account manager. It is exciting to meet you.” The Goblin, Sharpknife introduced himself to them both before settling properly in his chair.
“Oh, ok. That makes sense. Nice to meet you, Sharpknife,” Lyra greeted with a smile. “So, can you tell us what all this paperworks for or-”
“Lyra…” Harry started to warn her, she was being a little rude, trying to rush through all the paperwork and he could only guess it was due to her excitement to get her wand. Sharpknife and Griphook seemed amused by her so at least she wasn’t offending them or anything.
“The folders hold the information pertaining to your assets, this includes seats on the Wizengamot and who holds the current proxy, properties you currently own that are either residential or community buildings, such as businesses. They’ll also hold the last audit on your vaults for the Potter and Peverell lines. These are done every month and every transaction is documented and recorded automatically and magically,” Griphook explained, tapping the folder closest to him. “Buildings owned by your family may often have the family crest somewhere within the building or carved into it, to show that it is under your ownership.” Griphook continued and turned the Potter folder around for both of them to see, Sharpknife did the same with the one beside him.
The Potter crest held the head of a lion in the centre, looking proud and ready for anything. Almost challenging someone to fight it. Underneath the lion's head, three small black dogs sat underneath it, chasing after one another and above the lion a triangle with a circle in the centre and a line in the middle stood proudly. The sight of it made him pause as he saw that exact symbol on Lyra’s ‘Peverell’ crest.
The Peverell crest held the triangle symbol in the centre, the main focal point of the crest. Above the symbol sat a skull with a hood over the top of it and below the symbol, once more those three black dogs sat, but instead of chasing one another they were stationary.
“They have similarities…” Harry muttered to himself and Griphook hummed.
“The Potter’s come from the Peverell’s. When the Potter crest was made, it was said that they still wanted to honour their ancestors, but they needed to hide from a war and protect their family. The grims on the bottom, chasing after one another was to symbolise them moving forwards towards the future and the Peverell crest was a symbol to show they stood by their family. By doing this act and incorporating the Peverell crest into their new family crest and honouring them, the title never left the Potter line, allowing it to resurge once more when it was most needed.” Griphook paused, looking to Sharpknife now.
“The Peverell crest holds the symbol of the Peverell’s. I assume you’ve read the story of the three brothers,” he paused at their shaking heads and the Goblin frowned. “Well, the quick version of the story is each brother received a gift from death. A stone, a wand and a cloak. There’s more to the story, but I’m not here to tell you of it. Pick up the book yourself,” Sharpknife rolled his eyes. “Anyways, the wand,” He points to the line down the middle of the crest, “The stone,” he points to the circle, “And the cloak, creates the main symbol of the Peverell coat of arms. There’s not too much known of the Peverell’s, my predecessor had passed and kept only a few notes on them by their orders. But I can say they have a few natural inclinations for things some wizards may not agree with.” The Goblin spoke slowly.
“What's that supposed to mean?” Harry asked, tensing by his sister’s side. He’d looked into Seer’s before, once they figured out what Lyra was and he knew that many were well-liked in the wizarding world so it couldn’t be that. He wouldn’t take these Goblins, making his sister feel less than or worried she’d be looked down on for having a gift, like he was last year for his Parsaltongue.
“It is nothing…horrible,” Sharpknife hummed for a moment before turning his attention from the crest to them both. His beady eyes full of mirth. “It is simply gifts of magic, she may not possess them and if Miss Potter does then we shall discuss it, if she does not, it can wait until she is older to talk of what her children may inherit magically.” He assured her.
“Shouldn’t I know now?” Lyra asked, head tilting to the side. Sharpknife shook his head once.
“I think, if you do not have certain gifts there is no point worrying about it until you are considering marriage or children. However, if you still wish to know before taking your rings, then I shall inform you once we determine what gifts you may or may not have.” Harry frowned at Sharpknife’s retort but he couldn’t say he disagreed because really, there was no point in worrying about it until they had the information.
“...I guess.” Lyra sighed softly, Harry rolled his eyes a little and squeezed her hand once more.
“Sorry, she’s a bit of a knowledge hoarder.” He apologised to the pair of Goblin’s that simply nodded their heads. They were being a lot nicer than Harry remembered them being during his first visit. Both just grunted before pushing separate parchments towards them.
“We require more blood, these will tell us of any influences you may be under and this one,” Griphook stated, tapping the one underneath. “Will tell us any magical gifts you have, blocked or not.”
“You think we’re under someone's influences?” Harry asked curiously.
“Why? I mean, I’ve only met the Weasley’s and that giant guy on Harry’s eleventh birthday…and Tom and the minister..” Lyra started quietly muttering to herself, Harry once more squeezed her hand to silence her.
“You may not have many interactions with those from the magical world that you can recall, however, as two influential orphans who have found themselves to have political power, it would be a disservice not to ensure you are not under any compulsions to act in a certain way.” Griphook stated calmly.
“Meaning?” Harry asked, trying to keep his own calm, Sharpknife rolled his eyes and spoke next. Harry may have been a little proud he managed to get the Goblin to do such a thing.
“Meaning that Gringotts wishes to ensure that any transactions made today were of your own will. We perform an influence test on those of political standing or from old families any time they come into the bank to discuss money, properties, investments or other such things to ensure there is no fraud taking place. It was instated just after the last war when we noticed discrepancies in many old families' investment patterns changing in a way that was alarming and sudden. This is to simply assure us and yourselves that any actions taken today will be that of your own free will.”
“Oh..” Harry felt a little stupid that he hadn’t thought of that. They’d covered confounding charms and compulsions in DADA with Professor Flitwick after Gildroy left, he should have realised the bank wanted to ensure no one was being forced to do something. “Right, I understand. Ly, you good to..?” He glanced at his sister who looked none too happy to be giving more blood but she gave an awkward tilt.
“Can you…again?” Lyra asked awkwardly, Harry bit back a snort at her reaction and picked up the knife once more. Quickly making a cut he guides her hand over the top parchment in front of her and a few on the one below before doing the same with his own. “T-thanks.” Lyra mumbled, looking pale at the sight of her blood, Harry just hummed as he watched the two parchments start to work their magic.

Harry’s eyes narrowed at the results of his parchment, focusing on his own for a moment. He had no idea what Legilimency was but he somewhat knew what an Empath was. He could remember one of the mums from Primary school claiming to be one, wearing thick turquoise jewellery and muttering about crystals cleansing bad emotions, things like that. Vernon always called her a hippy, especially when she’d come to try and talk to him about his ‘bad energy’.
Harry hoped he wouldn’t start talking like that or dressing like a complete weirdo.
Annoyingly though, the word partial is beside the block so that probably means his gut instinct around certain people wasn’t just instinct. Or it was that stupid influence to distrust Slytherins and adults. He hated that the test couldn’t tell him who placed those influences and blocks on him, or even give him a date.
Has he been like this all the time? How much of his school life had been influenced by a bunch of blocks and well…influences.
Shaking his head, Harry turned his attention to his sister's parchment and found his frown deepening as he found more things he didn't understand or like. He didn’t like that someone had messed with him, but he hated that someone had messed with his sister.

Harry nearly snorted at the failed influence on learning. If there was one thing that was such a core part of Lyra’s being was her love of learning. He casted his eyes onto his sister and felt a little hysteria bubble in his chest at the look of annoyance and curiosity that had mixed itself onto her face.
“Let’s talk, Mr Potter,” Griphook stated, picking up the parchment with his results on it and tsking slightly, Harry could see the parchment below it was starting to list vaults but the Goblin had made sure to pull it towards himself for the time being. He belatedly realised he couldn’t hear what Sharpknife and Lyra were talking about. “These results show that you’re under many influences and blocks that may be restricting or influencing your behaviour at the moment, we’ll have to remove this before we can discuss what you may or may not own and what you wish to do with your finances.” Griphook informed him, Harry frowned a little but nodded slowly.
“Right…but can you walk me through some of these? I think I know what an empath is and I already knew I could speak to snakes, I don’t have foggiest what Legilimency is though.” Harry admitted. Griphook frowned at him.
“An Empath is a wizard or witch that absorbs and feel others’ emotions and energies deeply and are able to influence emotions and energies around them. It’s been noted that others with this gift often find that they’re the first ones to pick up on a change of mood within a crowded space. They’re also noted for being brilliant judges of character, one such noted witch with this gift was Catherine Potter, had made note of Yasmin Yaxley giving her feelings of ill-intent to several members of the Wizengamot in 1808. A week later Yaxley had attempted to cast the killing curse on the current minister of magic mid hearing for a member of the Travers family.” Griphook explained. Harry just nodded his head a bit, looking a little unsure.
To him, it sounded like a bunch of tosh honestly. A bad feeling and picking up on people's moods? That sounds pretty normal to him, but he was glad to hear of some of his family history and wouldn’t dare dismiss such information in front of the Goblins. Maybe he’ll send Lyra off in that direction to research and let him know what she thought, she’d at least give it an honest go unlike Hermione who would probably write it off immediately.
“Moving on, Parasaltongue doesn’t just mean you are able to talk to snakes. You’ll be able to communicate and control them as well as speak, write and read the language. This includes using Parselmagic, though the only books you’ll find on such things are from countries in south-east asia as Britain does not allow the sale of those books on British soil.” Griphook continued.
“I can cast in Parasaltongue?” Harry asked curiously, that would make duelling with the others a lot easier, maybe he could even figure out the colour changing spell in parseltongue and charm Draco’s hair Gryffindor red for a day or so.
“Yes, you can,” Griphook stated simply, not elaborating. “Moving on, Legilimency is the act of magically navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. A person who practised this art was known as a Legilimens, which is what we’d call you. You’ll need to build up some mental walls once the block is lifted to protect your thoughts and to avoid being bombarded by those around you.” Griphook finished up.
“...I don’t think I need to ask about these blocks, they’re pretty self-explanatory.” Harry stated calmly, rubbing at his face as he took in the information given to him. He was basically a mind reader who was supposedly sensitive to people's emotions. Griphook didn’t even seem to entertain the idea and started to explain each block in detail.
They were exactly what Harry thought they were.

Lyra looked between the parchment, Sharpknife and Harry. She just knew her nose was scrunched up in confusion but honestly most of the things on there confused her, bar the blocks as they were pretty self-explanatory.
“Ah, just as I thought. This is why you’ve inherited the Peverell line over your brother,” Sharpknife hummed taping the parchment, right by the word ‘Grim caller’. “That is a Peverell gift. I can assume your brother does not have it,” Sharpknife paused for a moment and then an almost shark-like grin took over his face. “A Seer? No wonder you knew what to ask for.” Lyra shifted a little in her seat with unease before speaking up.
“We only figured out that…that I was a Seer during Harry’s first year. I’ve only really had one book on the subject…but the book I had told me enough to know that I shouldn’t go around announcing that I am one, I’m sorry for misleading you.” Lyra offered, casting her gaze back at the parchments in front of her. Sharpknife scoffed a little.
“No ill-will shall form for protecting your secrets. Goblins understand the need after all,” He paused. “Like your brother, you’ll need to be cleansed before we can delve into your finances and properties. But I assume you’d like to understand what these gifts are?” that boney finger tapped once more on the page and Lyra nodded her head a little, this was getting overwhelming but she wanted to know…to understand.
“Grim caller,” Sharpknife started slowly. “A Peverell gift, it allows you to form a familiar relationship with multiple Grims at once and when in times of need they shall come to you and protect you or those you wish protected. Imogen Peverell was noted to have a Grim as a companion throughout her whole life and was never seen in public without it.” Sharpknife explained.
“And a Grim is?” Lyra asked, tilting her head to the side. A companion sounded nice, Harry had Hedwig and if this Grim could protect her and Harry from the Dursleys, it sounded like a win-win situation.
“They take the form of a large, black dog, sometimes described as spectral. They’re often paired with an omen of death but that tends to be a wizard's interpretation of them…in Goblin culture, they are friends of the dead and guides for those who need to pass on but haven’t.” Sharpknife explained and as interesting as that information was, Lyra’s thoughts turned to the large black dog that had approached them near the night bus. “They’re often found in the moors, in graveyards or can be found in urban areas on misty, foggy nights.”
“Do…do they seek out Grim callers?” Lyra asked softly, glancing up at Sharpknife who looked contemplative.
“Ismail Peverell noted that his first Grim found him just before his twelfth birthday, he’d had an argument of some kind with his brother Imran and the Grim had approached him growling and aggressive.” Sharpknife stated and Lyra felt more parallels shift.
“...Bugger.” Lyra found herself muttering, much to the apparent amusement of the Goblin in front of her.
“Bugger indeed. You’ll find your Grim’s, Miss Potter. Trust in that, no Grim caller has gone without their companion. Now, shall we discuss your other abilities?” Sharpknife asked and Lyra nodded.
Occlumency, from what Lyra understood of the conversation, meant that she could close off her mind against Legilimency. Sharpknife had noted that it was a good gift to have, as it naturally protected her from Legillimens that might attempt to see what visions she was having as a Seer.
Parasltongue meant she could control and talk to snakes and use magic only accessible to Parsaltongues, which excited her a bit, despite the fact she’d have to figure out how to get books from other countries to read them.
Being a Seer meant he could catch glimpses of the future and deliver prophecies. She knew that already but Sharpknife had been kind enough to point her in some book written by Percival Rackham and Mudiwa Onai for a better understanding.
It took little time to be taken to a chamber where they were introduced to more Goblins, healers apparently, before both she and Harry found themselves unconscious for their respective influence cleansings.

In the end, the pair left Gringotts feeling pretty good about their prospects. The vaults they had access to at the moment were the Potter and Peverell vaults, the others had all been hidden from like the heirship test. It made Lyra feel a little off that they couldn’t get a full scope of their finance and properties just because their magical guardian had decided to hide it from them.
Either way the vaults they had access to were plentiful and would last several generations before a dent was even made. They’d looked at a couple of properties that they could possibly move into but many of them were dilapidated and could take the entirety of the school year to make them inhabitable. The Goblins had suggested that they purchase a new property whilst they fix up some of the older ones (namely, Potter Manor and Peverell Estate), they even pointed them in the direction of someone who’d do so discreetly so they’d be doing that today at the latest.
They’d discovered as well that the Peverell line owned 45% of the Daily prophet and the Potters owned 50% of it, which had been exciting to learn. Harry had been a bit miffed about it, stating its full of lies and gossip but after Lyra had reasoned they could use their shares to fix that in the future, he’d conceded.
They’d also discovered some shares in Olivanders, Flourish and Blotts and the three broomsticks. It meant that in some way the Potter and Peverell vaults never stayed in stasis for long, however the Goblins had been insistent that both she and Harry make some investments. They’d asked for time to research and find things worthwhile to invest in as they didn’t want to make any mistakes and the Goblins had agreed for the time being.
With Gringotts finished with and with their heirship rings on their fingers, the pair trudged into Diagon alley to get their much needed school supplies and to figure out where they’d live for the next three weeks.
The busy day had just begun and already Lyra wanted to curl up and go to sleep.
