The Start of the New Week with Lectures
With the first week of lectures ahead, Harry feels a mix of excitement and determination. On Monday evening, he prepares for what lies ahead, selecting a sturdy leather-covered notebook and a pen that writes smoothly. Nyx, perched nearby, watches intently, sensing the importance of the upcoming days.
Wednesday morning arrives, and the Great Hall is buzzing with anticipation. Harry sits with Lysandra, Cyrus, and Selene at the Umbra table, listening to the excited whispers about the day's lecture. "I heard the first lecturer is an expert in magical combat," Cyrus says, his eyes gleaming with eagerness.
Lysandra nods thoughtfully. "Master Darian, right? My parents spoke highly of him. They say he doesn't just teach spells; he teaches you how to think like a true combatant."
"Sounds like someone who'll keep us on our toes," Harry replies, a small grin forming. He finishes his breakfast quickly and heads to the lecture hall with his friends, determined to secure a good seat.
Inside the grand hall, students settle in as a tall wizard with silver hair and deep blue robes strides to the front. "Good morning," he announces, his voice commanding immediate attention. "I am Master Darian, and today, we will explore the complexities of magical combat—an art that demands both skill and strategy."
As the room falls silent, Master Darian begins his lecture. "Tell me," he says, looking around the hall, "what is the most important weapon in a duel?"
Several students raise their hands, and he points to a boy in the front row.
"Our wands?" the boy suggests.
"A fair answer," Master Darian nods, "but incomplete. Your wand is a tool, nothing more. What makes it effective?"
Lysandra raises her hand. "Our knowledge of spells?" she offers.
"Closer," Master Darian says with a smile. "Knowledge is indeed a weapon, but even the most knowledgeable wizard can be defeated. The answer lies in understanding not just magic, but your opponent."
Harry feels a spark of recognition and raises his hand. "So, it's about predicting your opponent's moves?" he asks.
"Precisely, Mr...?"
"Potter," Harry replies.
Master Darian's eyes narrow slightly, recognizing the name. "Yes, Mr. Potter. Predicting your opponent's moves, understanding their weaknesses, and leading them into a trap of their own making. That is the essence of true combat mastery."
He continues, "For example, if you know your opponent relies heavily on fire-based spells, how would you counter them?"
Selene speaks up, "By using water-based spells or creating a defensive barrier to dampen the fire's effect."
"Correct," Darian agrees. "But more importantly, you might use that knowledge to bait them into overcommitting to their strength, only to strike at their weakness."
The lecture continues, with Master Darian explaining how to blend offensive and defensive strategies. He pauses to ask questions, drawing out the students' thoughts. "What about psychological warfare?" he inquires. "Can anyone explain how the mind plays into combat?"
Harry, still considering Darian's earlier points, raises his hand again. "If you make your opponent think they're winning, they might become overconfident and careless," he suggests. "Then you could strike when they're least prepared."
Master Darian's face breaks into a grin. "Exactly, Mr. Potter. Overconfidence can be a fatal flaw. By manipulating your opponent's perception, you control not just the battle but the very reality they operate in."
As the lecture progresses, Harry fills his notebook with notes, diagrams, and his own reflections. He writes down Darian's points about reading body language, using the terrain to his advantage, and mastering the art of distraction.
When the lecture ends, Darian claps his hands together. "Remember, students, combat is not just a test of strength but of the mind. Think on what you've learned today. Apply it. And always, always be prepared for the unexpected."
Afterward, Harry meets up with his friends outside the hall. "That was intense," he says, feeling invigorated. "But it makes so much sense. It's like chess—only with magic."
Lysandra nods, a thoughtful expression on her face. "Exactly. It's about thinking three steps ahead."
Cyrus can hardly contain his excitement. "I can't wait to practice this in dueling class! Imagine leading someone into a trap... we should try it out later."
Selene adds quietly, "What struck me most was how much it aligns with what we're learning in Mind Magic. It's all about understanding how people think."
Harry grins. "I think we're on to something here. Let's work on this together."
As they part ways to head to their next class, Harry feels a new level of excitement for the upcoming lectures. He knows there's much more to learn, but he feels ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.
