Regulus:
don’t come home.
Regulus:
mother summoned me for a meeting. do not come home.
Sirius:
shit reggie no don’t go alone!!!! I’ll be there in 10
Regulus:
no you won’t. you’ll just make it worse. stay at potters.
Sirius:
on my way
incoming call: reggie weggie 🖤
“Shit..” Sirius fumbled with his phone screen before managing to finally accept the call after the third ring.
Rapid French immediately fired at him from the other end of the call.
“Do not fucking ignore what I’m saying and don’t get anywhere near the mansion. Go back to James, or Remus, or Peter, or just go fuck yourself for all I care, but do not come home.”
Regulus was scared. Even under all the anger, dressed in fury and stoic looks Sirius could still easily make out the slightest shake in his brother’s voice, the way it sounded like he was pacing. What laid underneath it all; fear.
“Reggie, I’m not letting you go alone.” Sirius said solemnly, not yielding to his brother’s demands.
“Yes, you are in fact. I’ll be fine.” Regulus’ voice was stone cold to the average person, maybe even resentful. All Sirius could hear was the uncertainty when he said he’ll be fine.
Like even he doesn’t believe it.
“Reggie, no. No you won’t and I’m not letting that happen. I’m not letting her hurt you.” Not again was left unsaid.
“If you don’t promise me you’ll turn back right this instant I will call James. See what he thinks of you coming anywhere near her.”
Sirius took a sharp breath in. He shook his head. He wouldn’t.
“You wouldn’t.”
“Try me.” Don’t make me do it.
“Regulus, you can’t meet her alone. You know she’s not calling you in just to chat.”
“I know. I’ll be fine. Just stay away.”
A few seconds of silence felt like an eternity in that moment.
“You know that I can’t.” Sirius sighed heavily.
“Fine. I’ll text Remus. Have fun.” Regulus sounded like he was about to hang up.
“Wait! No! Don’t fucking do that, Reggie!” Sirius fumed.
That was so fucking unfair of him.
And still, Sirius wasn’t mad. Not at Regulus. The only thing he gave away with that nasty move is just how desperate he is to keep Sirius away and out of harms way. If only Sirius could do the same for him.
“Well?” Sirius could have sworn Regulus’ voice was audibly shaking by now. Still, he kept it together.
Regulus Black, always so perfect and proper. The perfect heir. Nobody knew what a horrible fate that was in reality. All the people saw was his wealth, his beauty, his sharp intellect and sharper eyes. Sirius knew what it’s really like to be in that position.
Sirius, who only ever makes Regulus’ life harder. Who just can’t shut up and take what’s thrown at him. Who can’t bother to behave himself like he was supposed to as the oldest heir.
Regulus, who’s always forced to look out for him despite being the younger one of them. Who has sacrificed so much to keep Sirius safe and alive.
Regulus, who sacrificed his own chance after happiness to make sure Sirius can have his.
Sirius hated himself more than anything at that moment. But he gave in. What else could have he done? Even if he goes with Regulus, he’ll only make matters worse.
“Okay.” He whispered quietly and listened as the line went cold. Regulus hung up.
Sirius put his head in his hands.
He had failed him again.
