I wish I steered that way

Graduated as top of their year, Scalpho and Lewis had every student convinced they were a perfect pair. Now three years later, they were sat in their shared college dorm in their last year before graduating with their respective degrees. Scalphos bed was pushed up against the wall, shelves filled with books from Shakespeare to koushun takami. Lewis’s half of the room looked empty in comparison, a big chair sat in front of the PC for games and a few weights hid underneath the bed.

Life had reached an odd kind of normal, not the usual comforting kind that people hold dear but the kind that's slowly drawing the floor from under your feet without you even realising it. the deadly kind of normal that leaves you scrambling on the ground where you can either change your path or stay collapsed and unable to breathe. Sclapho and Lewis however, were deeply unaware of this fact.
Now despite having dated for four years now, the two had never kissed before, the closet physical intimacy they had ever shared was a brisk hand hold when taking photos or whenever they had family dinners. This wasn't super weird to outsiders as the two claimed to be waiting for marriage. So there they sat, alone in their shared dorm room, five feet apart, not even their shoes touched. Each lonelier than they could even imagine yet never truly alone.
"Hey Lew," Scalpho asked. "How's the preparation for your races going?"
"It's going alright but I've been struggling with my steering wheel, Max said that he would swing round tomorrow to help so I'll probably be busy out on the track till late."
"mhmm" Scalpho nodded in response, turning her back to him already.
This was how i always was in private, short conversations that rarely lasted longer than a few minutes inbetween hours of long and suffocating silence. Words used to flow like water between them before they started dating, now they stayed stuck in their throats and unable to escape. This was what everyone expected of them though, the two star students, having grown up together ever since Scalpho moved in next door, the hamilton's darling son and the Webber's talented daughter. Of course they would date, get married, have kids and grow old together. Scalpho looked across her desk at the calendar, only 60 days left now, not long till it happened.
