PARVATI AND PADMA PATIL

PARVATI AND PADMA PATIL

History

Parvati and Padma are twin sisters whom are in the same year as Harry, Ron and Hermione. They are the children of Indian magical ambassadors Paarthiv and Paranavi Patil.

They are also Mayuris, an Indian subspecies of harpies with traits of peafowl, through their Mother Paravani. It is suspected due to them being from a mixed human-creature family the Indian and British Embassy wanted to come off as inclusive, though the Patils are pretty damn good at their ambassador jobs too.

They are nearly identical physically but they are personality wise entirely different. Parvati was always more the girly-girl whom loves gossip and fashion. Padma was the more study-oriented, calm and tomboyish one. Despite that the sisters were always close.

Hermione roomed with Parvati but while she was polite with her and Lavender, she had little in common with them. Meanwhile, Padma was one of the smartest students aside from her and the two would become academic rivals, being intense but still respectful. Though even Padma thought Hermione was overdoing it with taking all the classes in third year.

Through Ron’s relationship with Lavender and Parvati they slowly integrated in Harry’s group, even more so when the dark forces rose and they wanted to learn to duel better. They’d become part of the dueling/defense group calling themselves the Defense Association, but were also nicknamed ‘Dumbledore’s Army’.

Appearance

In their human form they are identical twin girls of Indian descent, sharing the same tanned skin, raven hair, golden brown eyes and even have a beauty mark in the same spot.

They are distinct though, Parvati always looks more dolled up with more makeup and more curly hairstyles. Padma use minimal makeup and wears her hair loose.

Their Mayuri forms has brown and white feathers, on their arms and legs, lower back. They also have brown and white feathers on their chest and below the belt to hide their assets. They have black feathers replacing their hair, and it is a bit more colorful mixed in with greens and blues but not overly so.

Powers and abilities

Both girls may have different personalities but both are accomplished witches in their own right. Padma is the more studious one but Parvati also doesn’t score badly in terms of tests though she doesn’t put as much work in as Padma.

Both are good with charms and Defense, especially after joining the DA where they show what they’re made off.

As Mayuri, they have the Eyes of Indra, which gives their species as a whole powers of ‘Vision’. It makes Parvati good at Divination. She doesn’t need to use things like palm reading or tea leaves, she opens the Thousand Eyes and sees the most likely outcomes for a person. Unlike a human prophecy whom sets up one definite path (though what it is tends to wooly) while a Mayuri’s are more likely outcomes but branched paths.

Padma uses it less on divination but specializes to use her vision to read a person’s intentions, rather seeing the Present than the future, the present person’s state of mind. It helps her read people or determining a character.

Parvati tends to study divination and Care for Magical Creatures, and tends to be better then Padma in terms of glamours and beautifying charms. Padma takes Arithmancy which enhances her vision as it helps determine more factors about a person.

While they don’t have twin telepathy like Fred and George seem to have, they are quite in synched when they are fighting together.

Due to being the daughters of ambassadors, they know a surprising variety of languages, not just English and Hindi.

Trivia

  • Their mother Paravani is named after a particular Mayuri from hindu myth, whom serves as the conveyance of the god Kartikeya.

  • The Eyes of Indra are named after Indra, the deity whom gave the Mayuri their ‘thousand eyes’.

  • The two have an insane spice tolerance; Not only due to being used to classic spicy Indian cuisine, birds can’t taste spicy so they don’t suffer from burning sensations. They do adore their mom’s home-made curry, but you need either a throat of steel or be part bird like them to eat a curry that spicy. Aside their father, Harry is the only one whom seems to be able to finish a bowl of it. Dragon blood and all.

  • Padma hopes to become an ambassador like her father and hence she has developed her vision prowess the way she did.

  • Parvati hopes to one day open a magical beauty salon, with a niche being able to groom the fur, scales or feathers of non-human magical beings.

  • As Parvati is in a polycule with Ron and Lavender, Padma instead snags Viktor Krum. As Hermione only has eyes for Harry and Luna, it is Padma whom gets asked by Viktor. She ticks a lot of the same boxes as Hermione as she is intelligent and bookish, but also not a sports girl so wouldn’t be as intimidated by his fame. Also a good way to stick it to the jerk of a headmaster Karkaroff, the ex-death Eater. Unlike Hermione and Viktor’s pen-pal relationship after book four, their relationship becomes more then that. If Padma ever gets that ambassador job, you bet she will be picking Bulgaria as her post.
