Madame Malkin's Robe Shop (Evelynne POV)
Evelynne couldn’t ever remember being happier than she was the day she got her Hogwarts letter, even years afterwards and it's still one of her happiest memories.
She knew she would be getting her letter soon, she had already shown very obvious signs of magic that even her detestful aunt couldn't ignore, but doubts still crept up, not helped by her aunt's constant snide remarks about her parentage and how she would be surprised if the offspring of a mudblood could produce even a slightly satisfactory witch. Evelynne, however, was used to far worse at the hand of her aunt and tried not to let it bother her.
Getting the letter meant it was finally time for school shopping. Diagon Alley was one of her favourite places, as she didn't leave the house much. It was a nice change of pace to be surrounded by other magical people who didn’t think of her as a piece of muck on the bottom of their shoes.
Her aunt was wealthy, and her mother had a rather large savings account that had been left entirely to Evelynne when she died, but her father hadn’t much gold, which led to more rude comments from her aunt when they went to Evelynne’s vault.
“Really, even with the Ministry job he couldn’t leave more for his only daughter? Well, you can't really expect much from a mudblood.” She had said when they opened the door to the vault.
Evelynne had her own vault, after her parents passing they left all of their belongings to her. Her vault had a rather large pile of galleons, sickles, and knuts, but that wasn’t all there. Many muggle artefacts that had been her grandparents were stored there, along with ancient magical artefacts her mother had loved collecting. Being in that vault brought back many memories to Evelynne, even the smell reminded her of when she was young. But it wasn’t long before her aunt dragged Evelynne out, so they could do some real shopping.
The first place they stopped was Madam Malkin's robe shop, so she could get fitted for her new school robes.
“You, go in, and I will fetch your books. After you are done here you will go to the wand shop and get your wand, if I am not there by then just wait for me outside.” Her aunt walked down the street, leaving Evelynne seemingly alone.
However, once she entered, she realised that this was not the case, as there were 2 boys in there, one with blonde hair and one with black. She walked over at once, hoping to make friends she could sit with on the train. As a woman in mauve started fitting her with some robes on a stool next to the 2 boys, she started listening in on them talking, which wasn’t very hard as they were not bothering keeping their voices down.
“Have you got your own broom?” The boy with blonde hair said. He was a bit taller than the other, and had a bored sounding voice. The boy with black hair had on round glasses and his hair was rather messy, as opposed to the blonde one’s neat slicked-back hair. Evelynne hadn’t talked to many kids her age, so she wasn’t sure how to introduce herself to them.
“No.” Answered the other boy, sounding slightly uncomfortable.
“Aren’t first years not allowed their own brooms?” Evelynne asked, then she realised how stupid of a question it must have been. They didn’t even know her, and might have been third years, for all she knew, and of course they would know all about brooms, and probably thought Evelynne was just plain dumb.
“No,” Said the blonde boy, “But I’m trying to sneak one in anyways. Father taught me how to fly ages ago, I’m hoping to eventually make it onto the Quidditch team. If only first years could play! Father says it’s a crime if I don’t get picked to play for my House. You two know all about Quidditch, right?”
“Erm-” Started the boy with black hair, but Evelynne cut him off.
“Oh, I love Quidditch! My mom and dad were both Chasers back when they went to Hogwarts.” Evelynne was excited to have something in common with the blonde haired stranger, and she was hopeful they could become friends.
“What house were they in? My whole family has been in Slytherin, so I know that's where I’ll be. I think I would leave if I ended up in Hufflepuff, would you?” The truth was, Evelynne’s father had been in Hufflepuff, but as her mother had been a Slytherin, she used the opportunity to make an even better connection.
“My mother was in Slytherin, and so was the rest of her side of the family. My aunt said that the only one not to be sorted into Slytherin since the school opened was my great grandmother who ended up in Ravenclaw.” As soon as she had finished her sentence, the woman in mauve coloured robes came over and escorted the boy with black hair out. The other boy seemed to either not notice, or not care that he had left, as he continued their conversation like he hadn’t been there in the first place.
“Who are your parents?” He asked her.
“Robert and Estelle Legrain. But they died a long time ago, so I live with my aunt. My dad- well, he went mad, killed my mom and then himself.” She hated remembering that day, so she attempted to change the subject. “I’m Evelynne, what's your name?”
“Draco Malfoy. My dad, Lucius Malfoy, is one of the school governors at Hogwarts.” They chatted for a bit about Hogwarts and what classes they were excited for, when a man with long blonde hair walked in through the door.
“Draco, it is about time we met your mother and headed back home. I expect the house elf should have some food ready for us.” Lucius seemed not to acknowledge Evelynne, but Draco said a quick goodbye before heading out the door after him. Evelynne finished getting her robes, and then met her aunt at the wand shop. Not even her aunt’s anger at Evelynne’s tardiness could really upset her, as Evelynne was sure she had just made her first real friend.
