Note
Hi there! First of all, thanks for reading this. I will not claim it’s an original idea and I don’t care if it’s not. I just love them almost as much as they love each other and cannot bear to see them apart and heartbroken. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I did writing it. Updates may be a bit irregular but this will definitely get finished. Chapter count may vary slightly and tags will be updated as we go.Also, english is not my first language, but I also don’t hold even an ounce of respect for it so I’ve tried my best and that’ll have to be enough.Title from "Withou you" by Breaking Benjamin, which is great, you should look it up if you don't know it.Without further ado, enjoy!

Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Remus

Oh, you ain't getting no younger
Your pain and your hunger
They're driving you home
And freedom, oh freedom
Well that's just some people talking
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Remus felt like he was seeing the scene in slow motion. Standing near to Harry, he saw Bellatrix aim at Sirius. Sirius was distracted checking on Harry, unaware of the fact that Remus had been doing exactly the same. He didn’t have time to warn him.

Remus saw the curse hit Sirius square in the chest and make him tumble back, right through the Veil.

And just like that time seemed to move fast. Faster than Remus could keep up with. He only had the presence of mind to hold Harry in order to stop him from running into the Veil after Sirius. He didn’t know how he even managed to do that when his whole body felt frozen in place. He thought he heard Harry screaming Sirius name, but it was muffled by the delighted scream Bellatrix let out, cackling with a joy that made Remus blood run cold. It was then that it sinked in. She had killed him. Bellatrix had killed Sirius, and Remus hadn’t been able to do anything about it. He had failed him. Again.

Sirius was gone, this time for good, and the only thing Remus wanted to do was follow him wherever he was now. He had just gotten him back. This was supposed to be his second chance. They were supposed to have more time. He was supposed to be able to tell him he loved him. That he still loved him. That he never stopped loving him, no matter how hard he’d tried.

Remus kept staring at the Veil as if Sirius would just walk out of it any second, flashing his trademark grin and running a hand through his hair in that way that had been driving Remus crazy since he started properly growing it out their second year at Hogwarts.

He didn’t.

He didn’t, and Remus, tears already rolling down his face, knew he wouldn’t survive it this time.
