Flirting with fire

**Title: Flirting with Fire**

The Gryffindor common room was buzzing with the usual chatter of students unwinding after a long day. James Potter lounged on the sofa, a grin plastered on his face as he spotted Sirius Black across the room. The dark-haired boy was deep in conversation with a group of girls, his laughter ringing out like music. James couldn’t help himself; he felt the familiar spark of mischief and affection surge within him.

“Hey, Sirius!” James called out, jumping to his feet. He strolled over with a swagger that could only be described as exaggerated. “I just wanted to let you know that you’ve officially stolen my heart—can I have it back?”

Sirius rolled his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips. “I’ll think about it, but only if you promise to buy me a Butterbeer.”

James leaned closer, his voice dropping to a mock-serious whisper. “Only if you promise to keep being ridiculously handsome while you do it.”

The girls giggled, and Sirius shot them a wink, clearly enjoying the attention. But James didn’t care about the others; his focus was solely on Sirius. As he walked back to his friends, a soft blush crept up his cheeks, but he laughed it off.

A few days later, they were out on the Quidditch pitch, practicing with the team. James zoomed around on his broom, weaving between players, when he spotted Sirius lounging against the goalpost, looking effortlessly cool. He swooped down to land beside him.

“Nice to see you’re finally putting in some effort, Black,” James teased, grinning. “I guess I can’t blame you for wanting to take a break from all that hard work of being so incredibly attractive.”

Sirius laughed, running a hand through his hair. “Thanks, Prongs. But you should really stop flirting with me. I might actually start believing it.”

James leaned against the post, feigning innocence. “Flirting? Me? I’m just stating facts. It’s not my fault you’re a walking heartthrob.”

Sirius’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Keep it up, and I might just have to start charging you for compliments.”

James shrugged, a cheeky smile on his face. “Worth every Galleon, if it means I get to see that smile.”

Later that week, during a late-night study session in the library, James found himself sitting across from Sirius, their books spread out before them. James kept sneaking glances at Sirius, who was deeply engrossed in a textbook. With a mischievous grin, James decided it was time for another round of flirting.

“Hey, Pads,” he said casually, leaning back in his chair. “If you keep studying that hard, you might just end up being the most charming wizard in all of Hogwarts.”

Sirius looked up, eyebrow raised. “And why is that a bad thing?”

James leaned forward, resting his chin on his hand. “Oh, it’s not bad. But it does make it hard for the rest of us mere mortals to compete.”

Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. “You’re incorrigible.”

“Incorrigibly smitten with you,” James replied, unabashedly. “But I’d be willing to share my charm if you’d let me take you out for a proper date.”

Sirius paused, a slight blush creeping into his cheeks. “You’re bold today, aren’t you?”

James felt a thrill at the sight of Sirius flustered. “I’m just being honest. Can you blame me for trying?”

Sirius smirked, but there was a glimmer of something else in his eyes. “Not at all. I just hope you’re prepared for what happens if I take you up on that offer.”

James’s breath hitched. “I’m always prepared for a challenge, especially when it involves you.”

One afternoon, while wandering the grounds, they found a secluded spot under a giant oak tree. The sun filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows around them. James stretched out on the grass, looking up at Sirius, who was perched beside him, a carefree smile on his face.

“You know,” James said, propping himself up on one elbow, “I think you’re the reason the sun shines so brightly today.”

Sirius laughed, shaking his head. “You really need to work on your lines, Jamie.”

James grinned. “I think I’m doing just fine, thank you very much. You’re just too busy being gorgeous to notice.”

As he spoke, he caught Sirius’s gaze and held it, the playful banter giving way to a moment of sincerity. James could feel his heart racing, and for once, he felt a flicker of vulnerability.

“Okay, okay,” Sirius said, rolling his eyes but unable to hide his smile. “I see your strategy. Trying to win me over with compliments?”

“Is it working?” James asked, his voice softer now.

Sirius hesitated, his expression shifting. “You know, it might just be.”

Just then, the moment was broken by the sound of a nearby group of students. James’s heart pounded in his chest, and he couldn’t help but feel shy, the weight of Sirius’s gaze lingering on him.

Days turned into weeks, and the playful flirting became a routine. James never tired of it, but he started to notice something different in Sirius’s reactions—an eagerness, a challenge.

One evening, they were sitting in the common room, a cozy fire crackling nearby. James had just finished a particularly cheesy line about how Sirius should consider modeling for the next Hogwarts calendar.

“Seriously, Jamie,” Sirius said, trying to suppress his laughter. “Are you ever going to take a break from this?”

James smirked. “Why would I? I’m having too much fun.”

Sirius leaned back, a glint in his eyes. “Well, if you’re so good at flirting, how about I give you a taste of your own medicine?”

James blinked, caught off guard. “What do you mean?”

Sirius leaned closer, his voice dropping to a sultry whisper. “I’ve always thought you’d look stunning in that Quidditch uniform, especially with your hair all ruffled. I could get used to seeing you like that… maybe even on a date?”

James’s heart raced. The casual banter he’d thrown around so easily had flipped back on him, and he suddenly felt a wave of shyness wash over him. “Wait, you… you want to go on a date?”

Sirius shrugged, feigning nonchalance. “Why not? You seem like fun. And I suppose I could use some excitement in my life.”

James opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. Instead, he felt heat rush to his cheeks, leaving him utterly speechless.

Sirius smirked, clearly enjoying James’s reaction. “What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?”

James finally found his voice. “I just didn’t expect you to flirt back.”

“Maybe you should pay more attention,” Sirius teased, nudging James’s shoulder playfully. “I might just surprise you.”

As they both sat there, the realization settled in: the lines between friendship and something more were blurring. James could hardly contain his excitement, a mix of embarrassment and elation swirling within him.

“Okay, okay, you win,” James said, recovering his bravado. “When do I take you out on this date?”

“Surprise me,” Sirius replied, a playful twinkle in his eye. “Just don’t make me wait too long. I have a reputation to uphold, after all.”

James grinned, feeling a rush of determination. “Don’t worry, I’ve got some plans up my sleeve. Just you wait.”
