Summary
Remus lupin was born deaf in one ear, he learnt sign language as a kid because his mum was mostly deaf. His friends learns sign for him.

Hiii!! I myself am not deaf but i do know sign language and i have tried to make this as accurate and educated as possible but please point out if anything is wrong. Not that there's much to go wrong with, this is incredibly short 😭

"James, could you repeat that sorry?" Remus was tired of this. 

 

"Yea, sorry, I was planning our prank, I can just explain again later." 

 

The boys dormitory was always a safe haven for remus. Not too loud but the boys were always rowdy enough that it kept him present. It was his haven until he told them about his deafness. Peter would shout at him and lean in on his hearing ear. James would just say "I'll tell you later." And sirius shouted, a little less then Pete, but still he made it awkward. 

 

He didnt know how to explain that he grew up with sign language, infact he's sometimes better at bsl then English and if they would learn even a few basic words then his life would be changed. Good thing he's got a Sirius Black.

 

Sirius knew remus inside and out. He knew about the deafness before the others and he knew about his mother's deafness even before that. Sirius also knew, unbeknownst to remus, that sign language exists.

 

Sirius researched sign language almost daily. He learnt the alphabet first, then introductions, them basic phrases. He wasn't sure how to approach remus about his knew found skill at the language. He kept on putting it off, he kept on practicing and most of all he kept on noticing Remus. 

 

Eventually Remus had had enough. It was inevitable. He sat them all down in their dorm for a serious chat. 

 

"I need to talk about something. Or ask something rather." Remus said to the three boys waiting patiently on his bed. 

 

"Go ahead Moony." Peter shouted. 

 

"You all know I'm deaf. But there's another way to get me to understand you besides shouting." 

 

"Really?!" James, bless him, seemed excited. 

 

"Yes, it's called sign language, it's not really a thing in the wizarding world but it's massive for muggles. It's where you make, uhm, shapes with your hands and i understand those shapes as words. It sounds more complicated then it is." He stuttered through his scrambled explanation. 

 

"Can you show us?" Peter said, at a less deafening pitch then usual. 

 

Remus signed the words 'Hi, im Remus lupin and I'm very thankful for my friends.' 

 

"We're thankful for you too Moony." Sirius finally piped up. He had a smug grin on his face.

 

"What?" Remus was taken aback. How did sirius know?

 

"I've been learning." He said. Then he signed "anything for our Moony."
