The Thought To Be Last Goodbye — Sirius’ POV
I quickly packed my bag, grabbing school clothes, books, everything I might need, knowing I was never coming back. I tried my best to ignore the overbearing pain in my chest—my ribs had broken when I was flung against the wall by my dear old mother. I felt someone’s presence at the doorway of my room. I knew who it was before even turning to look. Turning around, I saw my younger brother standing there.
“Reg…” my shaky voice called out to him.
“Sirius… What are you doing?” Regulus asked.
“…Packing…” I replied simply.
“How long will you be gone?” he questioned as soon as I answered.
“…” Silence. He knew what that meant—I was leaving him. The person who had promised to never leave him was breaking that promise.
“Look, Reg—” I started, but he cut me off almost immediately.
“Goodbye, Sirius.” Regulus turned to leave, but I quickly grabbed his wrist, stopping him.
“Regulus… come with me, please,” I choked out, my voice still raspy from having a screaming match with Walburga. “You can’t stay here! You can’t be like our parents!” I told him desperately.
“I am not like you, Sirius,” he said calmly. “I’m no different from them. You chose your side; I’ll have to live with mine.” He turned and left. This time, I made no effort to stop him. I just stood there helplessly, knowing I had lost my little brother.
Ignoring the burning sensation of tears trying to force their way out, I grabbed my packed bag and climbed out my window. As soon as my shoes touched the soft grass, I ran. I ran fast and far, trying to get away from that horrid house. After what seemed like hours of running, I saw a house—the Potters’ house. The one James said I could visit whenever. But this wasn’t a visit; this was the place I hoped I could stay, for as long as I was allowed.
I limped to the door and knocked weakly until my knuckles began to bruise. That’s when the door opened, revealing my best friend. James’ warm smile turned to worry as he saw me bruised and bleeding on his porch.
“Sirius! What happened to you?!” James asked, concern the only thing in his voice.
“That’s a long story… Can I come in?” I replied, my voice dry and raspy. James was already pulling me inside without a second thought.
“Yes, of course. Come in.” As soon as the door swung shut, I tried to forget about the life and the people I had left behind, knowing only that I was safe.
