A United Front (When Those Forgotten Rewrite Their Destiny)
Summary
When Harry gets lost in the halls of Hogwarts during his first year, he comes across a very helpful older student. This encounter changed the trajectory of his seven years at Hogwarts. He loses the rose-coloured glasses he'd had on pretty quickly, learns not all Slytherins ae evil, and widens his circle of friends beyond Ron and Hermione. He also realises that he has people at his side who would do anything to help him, so he doesn't shoulder everything on his own. This is the story of how Harry got one person who was on his side through everything, always, and how that might've changed his life at Hogwarts for the better. -------This story contains a lot of original character who are a major part of the plot and fashion that isn't quite realistic. If you don't like this, I don't think you'll enjoy this story. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy! I have been writing this for a while, and it's become a bit of a pet project for me.
Note
A new story has arrived! Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Seraphina Vesper Rosier-Rayne

Seraphina Vesper Rosier-Rayne knows tragedy intimately. She’s had it as a constant companion her whole life, tragedy and grief both.

It hadn’t always been this way. No, Seraphina had had a very nice childhood. She was born on April 3rd 1979 to a loving and warm father, a caring but disciplined mother, and adoring paternal grandparents who visited often enough to have a good relationship with their granddaughter. They lived in a manor house in the French Riviera that had belonged to her father’s family for generations, who were very influential in the French Wizarding World, especially due to their connections to the Magical Creature community.

Her father, a politician who worked very closely with the French Minister Alexandre Delacour, was well known for his calm demeanour, persuasive personality and his very honest opinions that the Ministry respected greatly. Her mother, who was a British Politician and Unspeakable at the Department of Mysteries specializing in Family Magicks and their relations to Creature blood, had met her husband during a meeting between the most influential people of the two countries and it was love at first sight, quite literally for the French man.

A month into their relationship, Stephen had revealed that the two were actually soulmates, connected by the fact that he was born to two Faeries and the Fae were born with predestined mates that they found after making physical contact with them, which had happened when the couple had shook hands upon being introduced to one another. That hadn’t phased Celeste a bit, as she was used to the unknown from her job.

A year later, Stephen Helios Rayne and Celeste Vinda Rosier had moved to France, were married and already expecting their first child.

Then, tragedy struck during a routine visit to England by Celeste. Her mother, who’d been visiting her cousins Narcissa and Andromeda and her best friend Severus Snape, had been attacked by rogue Death Eaters who thought she was a disgrace to the name of purebloods because she hadn’t aligned herself with the already dead Dark Lord as the Lady of a Dark family, unlike the rest of her family who had joined the psychopath’s side during the – already finished – war.

And that was how Seraphina lost her mother when she was five. (On the 16th of May 1984)

After the loss of his mate, her father was never the same. He grew depressed, stopped eating except when forced by his grieving daughter or mother, and almost completely retired, refusing to go to work after his wife’s funeral.

Seven months later, Seraphina lost her father. The official reason had been malnutrition and weakened heart, but his family knew that the true reason had been grief and heartbreak. (On the 16th of December 1984)

After becoming completely orphaned within the span of half a year, her grandmother decided to take her away from her home and raise her on her own. Her grandmother, who was a very… powerful woman, decided to introduce her to her Faery heritage in the best way possible… direct exposure.

You see, deep in the heart of Forêt de Fontainebleau was a gateway to the land of Nemorosa. All types of magical creatures that resided in Europe had all come together to create this safe haven, ruled by the ancient Fae’s royal family, the House of Thelonius, Seraphina’s paternal grandmother’s family. Since her grandmother was one of the last Fae in the family, she was the current ruler of Nemorosa, a fact Seraphina hadn’t really processed until she’d started living with the woman permanently. Her father was supposed to have taken over the throne from Linette Thelonius, but due to his passing, that responsibility now lay solely on Seraphina’s shoulders, and it was a responsibility she’d never wanted but had been forced to handle.

Unfortunately for her, Seraphina had soon discovered that she was… shockingly good at being a Faery Princess. Her powers had immediately activated upon stepping foot on the magical land, and it didn’t take her long to control them.

Seraphina’s Faery form was quite different from how she normally looked outside Nemorosa. She still had the amber eyes she’d inherited from her father – eyes that at times looked like molten gold – but her normally raven black hair, hair she’d inherited from her mother, had immediately changed to platinum blonde that was almost white in colour. Her ears had also gained points at the end (a simple characterisation of most fae). As she grew older, her cheeks sharpened to the distinct pureblood facial structure and she’d grown much taller (another fae trait).

Her looks weren’t the only thing that had changed with the move, the way she was educated had also changed. Her parents had been adamant about teaching her a mix of wizarding and fae magic alongside British and French culture and politics, to make sure she was aware of both her heritages – the House of Rayne’s French reputation and the House of Rosier’s British influence. Now; however, she was only being taught French and fae magic and politics. If she wanted to know anything about her mother’s country or the magical core she’d given Seraphina, she’d have to find material and read it on her own. Don’t misunderstand, Seraphina did do that as she was determined to know everything about her mother, her world, and the reason for her death, but it was discouraging to know that her Grandmother didn’t support these endeavours for the simple fact Celeste Rosier had come from a problematic country.

None the less, by the time her Hogwarts letter came, Seraphina knew as much as she could about the controversial British Wizarding World.

Her Hogwarts Letter.

It became a point of contention between her and her grandmother for a week straight.

Unbeknownst to Seraphina, who’d been under the impression she’d be attending Beauxbatons Academy of Magic come September like her father had, her parents had decided that they’d instead enrol her at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where her mother had gone. They’d believed that she needed some British influence in her life after growing up in France and thought that Hogwarts would be the best place to give her that.

Her grandmother had been infuriated by the plan and had decided to completely throw it away and follow her own plan for Seraphina by sending her to Beauxbatons, Seraphina wanted to honour her parents’ decisions, especially her mother, and go to Hogwarts.

After much debate and… shouting matches, Seraphina finally got her way and on September 1st 1990, she found herself on the Hogwarts Express on her way to the giant castle that would house her for the next seven years.

______

September 1st 1990

“Come in!” A distinctly male voice called out from the compartment Seraphina had just knocked on.

“What are you two so distracted by?” Seraphina had never really interacted with people her age who weren’t sworn to serve her, so she wasn’t sure how to exactly… greet them or introduce herself, so that was the best she could come up with, especially when she saw the two people in the compartment staring at an interesting book-like contraption on the girl’s lap.

“Nothing important. I am Sebastian Nott, and you are?”

“Seraphina Rayne, nice to meet you.” Seraphina said with a small smile, her French accent pretty apparent.

“I’m Wilhelmina Prince, but please just call me Mina, my full name is a bit too long. You too, Sebbie.”

“Sebbie?”

“I like giving people I like nicknames. Would you prefer crabby?”

“Why crabby?” Sebastian Nott asked, his eyebrows furrowed in obvious confusion. Seraphina was also confused, but she decided to see where the conversation went.

“Muggle joke, you won’t get it.” Seraphina and Sebastian shared a look before letting it go with a shrug. “Anyway Miss Angelic-Devil, we were just discussing technology. Would you like to join the conversation?”

“Hmm sure.” Seraphina said softly as she waved her wand, levitating her trunk onto its designated place beside Sebastian’s and Mina’s.

Sebastian was of average height for an eleven year old, but had sharp cheekbones and jawline, even at his age. He was brunette but had a single streak of blond at the front of his wavy hair and hazel eyes that were very round. Seraphina didn’t know whether to describe him as intimidating or cute.

Wilhelmina had as dark hair as Seraphina’s when she wasn’t in fae form, but cut to be around her shoulder and had curtain bangs that slightly covered her bright blue eyes that had some green specks. Her face was slightly round but with sharper cheekbones. She was petite and short, but very loud and expressive, which Seraphina liked about her new friend.

________

“Your Highness. What a pleasure to have you here with us. Now, if you’d lower your mind barriers enough for me to be able to sort you, I’d greatly appreciate it.”

‘Oh, uh… of course.’ Seraphina thought in response, focusing a bit to let the walls she’d always had around her mind fall slowly. It would be enough for the… sentient hat to see inside and make it easy for her to erect them back.

Hmm…. Let us see here. You are desperate to avenge your mother, and have used every knowledge base available to you to make sure you didn’t enter the Hogwarts playing field uneducated. You have a large thirst for knowledge, yes, but a kindness about you that is hard to remove from your very core. You’ve struggled in life, but you didn’t let that taint you or darken your spirit. Even then, you have a… depth to your soul that is hard to find in people your age. It is hard for people to earn your trust, but when they do, they gain your undoubting loyalty forever. It is why you’ve never forgotten your parents, and show a great deal of loyalty to the grandmother that tried to erase them from your existence. I think I know the perfect place where this kindness and loyalty can grow, or would you prefer a place where you would be challenged mentally. I must warn you, though, it will be quite the competitive environment.”

‘I think I’m done with competitions and fights, I’m involved in enough of them back home. I’d like to… explore this part of my character you see.’

“Very well then, better be….”

“HUFFLEPUFF!”

As Seraphina stood from the stool and put the hat on the stool, she noticed that her previously all black robes had gained yellow accents and her tie, which had been white before, had also changed to be black and yellow striped. The general Hogwarts crest had transformed to be the crest of Hufflepuff House.

She regally walked towards her new house table, sitting beside a blonde girl who turned towards her with a bright smile.

“Hi! I’m Yolanda Macmillan.”

“Seraphina Rayne. It’s nice to meet you.” The girl’s blonde hair wasn’t platinum like Seraphina’s in her Fae form, but a very bright, sunshine yellow. Her eyes were a sage green, and she was much tanner than Seraphina, who was pale as snow. She was much taller than Seraphina, and had a cute round face that emphasized her heart-shaped lips.

“You’re not from around here, are you?” Yolanda asked with a curious tilt to her head.

“I’m Half-French and Half-English, but I was raised in France. And you don’t seem to be British either.” The girl’s accent was a lot thicker than the normal British one Seraphina had heard before.

“I’m Scottish, but my mum is Spanish. I was raised in Scotland though.”

“How… interesting. Is it much different from England?”

“Not really. Is France?”

And that started a debate between the two girls about their respective countries’ similarities and differences between them.

It was the start of a wonderful friendship that Seraphina had a feeling would last a long time.

September 2nd 1990

“Come, Phina, there’s someone I’d like you to meet.”

“Me too. Who should we start with? Mine is at the Ravenclaw table.”

“Mine’s there too.” The two shared a laugh at that before heading towards the blue and silver table.

It was the day after the welcoming feast, and the two Hufflepuffs, who’d found out they shared a dorm, had been stuck at the hip since meeting each other the night before.

“Mina!” Seraphina exclaimed, attracting the attention of the girl in question, who was sitting with a boy with – shockingly enough – grey hair, light blue eyes, very fair skin and who was wearing thin-rimmed glasses. He was rugged, but Seraphina could tell he was actually pretty innocent, it was just his features that made him look unapproachable, a bit like Sebastian Nott.

“Hi Marcus.” Yolanda said with a small wave, giving the grey-haired boy one of her bright, sunshine smiles. In the small time they’d known each other, Seraphina had learned that the girl was the literal incarnation of the sun.

“Hi Yolanda!” Marcus exclaimed, directing a gummy smile towards them. “Hello, I’m Marcus Ollivander. Nice to meet you.”

“Seraphina Rayne. I have a question, do you have any relation to the wandmaker Ollivander?” Seraphina asked bluntly as she shook the boy’s outstretched hand. He laughed softly at her question.

“Yes, that would be my grandfather. I have a feeling I’ll be asked this question a lot, huh?”

“Probably, yeah.” Wilhelmina said with a laugh that sounded more like an evil cackle that caused a chain of laughter to be released from the other three teenagers.

It was a good start to their first day, and Seraphina was glad she’d met such nice people so far.

______

September 3rd 1990

“So that’s why you were glaring at Professor Snape the whole time….” Yolanda said contemplatively, and Seraphina nodded at her words.

“It’s just infuriating, you know. My mother always talked about her dear friend, and how he got her through school, but the second she passes away, he forgets all about her daughter. I haven’t heard from him since her passing, not even a letter of condolence.”

“That’s… actually really rude, but maybe he had his reasons?”

“Maybe, but a simple ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ isn’t that hard to write and send, so I don’t know if I want to hear them, whatever they may be.”

“I get it. I wouldn’t want to hear them either.”

They two were on their way to charms class after double potions, which hadn’t really gone as they’d hoped. While they were paired with Ravenclaw, whom they got along with well enough, the professor was very strict and a bit… mean, and it didn’t help that Seraphina was glaring at him the whole time.

They had charms with the Gryffindors, though, so that should be a different experience. They’d heard from their older house-mates that the lions could be very chaotic, so that should make class interesting.

“Hey Justin!” Yolanda greeted as soon as they’d joined some of the Gryffindors standing in front of the classroom room. She seemed to have recognized one, and as soon as she’d called out, a red-head turned towards them with a small smile. He was more burly than most of their year-mates but had warm brown eyes and a round face that was very inviting, a contrast to his rather intimidating figure.

“Hi Yolanda.”

“This is Seraphina Rayne. Phina, this is my Gryffindor friend Justinian Griffin. He’s part of the foreigners club!”

“Really? It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too! And yes, I’m from Bulgaria, but my father was Welsh.”

“I’m from France, but my mother was English. It seems a lot of people in our year aren’t fully British.” The three laughed at that, and they started conversing about the class.

“I mean charms is such a broad subject name. It could be about anything!” Yolanda was telling them, and the two nodded in agreement. The doors opened then, and the three continued talking as they moved to take their seats beside each other and didn’t stop until the exceptionally short professor who Seraphina knew was half goblin (Fae perk) started the lesson.

Seraphina felt she had gained a new friend and hoped he’d blend seamlessly into their friend group.

September 7th 1990

“The weather is so nice this time of year!” Yolanda exclaimed as the two made their way to Greenhouse 2, where they’d be taking their first Herbology class and the two Hufflepuffs were especially excited to see their Head of House in action. It would also be the first class they’d share with Slytherin House, which should be interesting.

“It is. It’s definitely colder than France, but it’s pretty nice.”

“Really? I didn’t know France was hot.”

“Oh yes….”

“Seraphina!” A voice called out behind the two girls, and they turned to find a boy in Slytherin robes coming towards them with a small smile on his face. Another boy was walking beside him, and Seraphina could instantly see that he was… pretty. He had short blonde hair (which Seraphina would later learn was actually dyed), pierced ears with three earrings on each one, and mesmerising silvery grey eyes that Seraphina hadn’t seen before, not even among the fae, who were known to be the most beautiful magical creatures alongside the Veela. He was wearing a navy sweatshirt and blue jeans underneath his open school robes, which was interesting as Seraphina hadn’t seen anyone going to class in muggle clothes on instead of the school uniform.

“Hello Sebastian. It’s nice to see you again.”

“You too! Oh, this is my best friend Hadrian Black.” The boy introduced, gesturing to the Slytherin standing beside him with a small smirk on his face. Seraphina instantly found the boy’s cocky demeanour annoying.

“A pleasure.” Seraphina said blankly, which just caused the boy’s smirk to widen. “This is my friend Yolanda Macmillan.”

“Oh! The Macmillan heiress right? It’s nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure is all mine Heir Nott.” Yolanda said with a bright smile on her face. “And it’s also nice to meet you Hadrian.”

“Nice to meet you as well Yolanda. And you too Seraphina.” Hadrian said, turning towards the girl with the smirk still on his face.

“Yes. What do you think Herbology will be like?” Seraphina asked, trying to shift the conversation and continue talking to the infuriating boy in front of her.

“I wonder if she’ll let us work with the plants or if it it’ll be purely theoretical.” Sebastian pondered as they continued walking towards the lesson.

“I guess it might be a mix of both methods.” Yolanda said with a thoughtful hum.

“I guess so. Will she start us with something hard, though? I’m not the biggest Herbology expert.” Seraphina asked softly, not sure if she was talking to herself or those around her.

“Really? There’s something you’re bad at? How shocking!” Hadrian said, a slightly sarcastic lilt to his voice that had Seraphina’s right eye twitching in annoyance.

“What is that supposed to mean, Mister Perfect-In-Every-Way.” Seraphina replied in the same tone, and the infuriating boy just raised his hands with a mock innocent look on his face.

“Hey. I never claimed to be perfect, but if you see me as such, then please, continue to do so.” That had Seraphina groaning. She huffed but didn’t grace him with a reply, only walking faster to leave his presence.

“You really had to annoy her, didn’t you?” Sebastian asked in exasperation, but all Hadrian did was grin.

“I did no such thing. We were having a normal conversation, she’s the one who got mad for no reason.”

“Uhuh. Keep telling yourself that.” Yolanda said in a deadpan voice before running to catch up with her friend, ignoring the two Slytherins.

The two boys shared a look before continuing on their way, separate from the two girls.

______

September 13th 1990

Seraphina was late. She was so late. She’d never been late in her life! It was that stupid book she’d been reading. It’d kept her up all night, and she hadn’t slept a wink, but apparently her eyes had closed, and she completely missed her alarm, and subsequently, breakfast. Rushing to get dressed and leave her room, Seraphina knew she’d have to run to get to her class on time.

She also knew it was dangerous to be running in the halls and down the moving stairs, but she didn’t have a choice in the matter. She wasn’t going to get a reputation for being late!

In her hurry, she didn’t notice the staircase in front of her, and tripped on her feet. Seeing the large staircase, she closed her eyes and braced for the inevitably painful impact, but it didn’t come. Instead, she felt a rush of magic coming from a hand that had grabbed her forearm to stop her descent. It felt like her life had just changed, and a new centre of gravity had been created for her, like she wouldn’t be able to live without this saviour of hers anymore.

Opening her eyes and looking up, her amber eyes met silvery grey ones that were wide in shock. Seraphina felt a shiver run down her spine as their magic reacted to their new bond.

“You… you’re not human, are you?” That was the first thing out of Hadrian Black’s mouth after he’d pulled her away from the staircase and helped steady her on her feet. The two were staring at each other with wide eyes, but they hadn’t know what to say to each other until now.

“Umm, yes. I mean no, I’m not!” Was Seraphina actually stuttering?! What is wrong with her?! She’s supposed to be a princess for Merlin’s sake! “You’re not a muggle-born either! I mean I didn’t really believe the rumours, but now it’s been confirmed.”

That caused the boy to chuckle under his breath as he swept his hair away from his eyes. It wasn’t the blond she’d seen on him the week before, but it was half platinum blonde, half raven black and much longer than it’d been when they’d first met. He wasn’t wearing his uniform again, but black pants and a white shirt tucked into it with a beige jacket on top and ankle boots for shoes. It was very casual, and complimented his slightly unruly hair that was covering his eyes a bit.

“I’m not, no. I’m very much a pureblood, unfortunately.” The last part was muttered under his breath, but Seraphina heard it loud and clear; she chose not to comment on it and let him change the subject. “So what, you’re a creature that has a mate, and I just happen to be yours?”

“Yes. I’m a fae, and you are… my mate.” Seraphina explained softly, happy to not need to explain the details to him since he already seemed to know everything, which was interesting considering most magicals wouldn’t have been able to recognize the formed bond.

“Huh….” Hadrian sighed out, tilting his head a bit in thought. “So… what now?”

“I… don’t know. I suppose we can see where this takes us. I’m not going to start dating at eleven, but we can continue being friends and see where we stand in a few years?”

“Yeah…. I can work with that. I must warn you, though, I will need to inform my grandfather and he’ll probably insist on seeing you in the next few years, and he might even speak to your guardian about a contract of some kind, he’s traditional like that.”

“Why would he do all of this?” Seraphina asked, curious.

“Because I am the Heir Apparent to the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, and it’s protocol in my family.”

“You…. You’re the Heir Apparent of the House of Black?!” Seraphina exclaimed in shock, staring at him in a mix of exasperation and disbelief. How could someone so casual and nonchalant be the heir of one of the oldest and most powerful families in the wizarding world?! Everyone know the House of Black and their vast history, even her grandmother in all her glory held immense respect for the current Lord Black who was apparently her mate’s grandfather. Of all the people she could’ve been bonded to, fate had to choose this one?

“Yes.” Hadrian said simply, smirking a bit at her shock.

“Okay…. Okay, I can deal with that.” Seraphina said in a bit of a panicked voice as she started pacing. Hadrian laughed loudly at her reaction.

“It’s not that big of a deal, you know.”

“Yes it is! Because that means you are the son of Sirius Black.” Seraphina exclaimed, whispering the name like it was a dark spell. At her words and tone, Hadrian’s face closed off and a blank expression fell upon it. Seraphina belatedly realised she’d said the wrong thing. Why was this conversation leaving her so wrong-footed when she’d always been so composed?

“Yes.” Hadrian said bluntly, his silvery eyes darkening to resemble storm clouds. “And that’s exactly why I don’t tell people I’m a pureblood. If you never want to talk to me again, I’ll understand.”

“That… that’s not what I meant.” Seraphina said loudly. “I just… ugh. Why am I so flustered?”

“Because I am your mate and you don’t know what to say in this moment. Believe me, I know the feeling.”

“I would like to be friends and see where this takes us, and I didn’t mean to insinuate your father would be a reason for us not to start this… journey so to speak, I was just flustered to realise you’re actually a member of one of the most powerful pureblood families in the world and yet you don’t act like it at all.” Seraphina said, making sure to explain her thoughts as succinctly as possible. This, she was good at.

“I understand. I do. I’ve just never put much weight into my title and have been determined for a long time to ignore it for as long as I can. If that’s not something you can agree with, I can respect your opinion without agreeing.” Hadrian replied in the same manner, apparently also good at explaining his thoughts elegantly. That was… good. Very good even. They can understand each other better if they speak in a similar way.

“No, I actually… admire your ability to ignore protocol and do as you please. I wish I can… do the same sometimes.”

“Hmm…. I’m sure we can do something about that.” He replied, finally smirking mischievously after spending too long looking blankly at her. Seraphina never thought she’d actually want someone to smirk at her, but she found she preferred it to the nonchalant mask he’d been wearing before. How… curious.

“We?” That had him chuckling in amusement and nodding.

“Yes. We. That is what we’ll be from now on, is it not?”

“I suppose so.”

And as the two made their way through the corridor, talking and slowly getting to know each other, Seraphina found herself feeling… calm and at peace for the first time in a long time. She even forgot about being late to class and all the stresses her grandmother had been heaping on her.

It was… freeing.

Who knew all she needed to do was find her bloody soulmate to feel like this again? Especially after so many years of stress after her parents’ death?

September 17th 1990

“So that necklace keeps your fae form from breaking free?”

“Yes.”

Hadrian and Seraphina were sitting side by side, leaning against a large tree on the grounds of Hogwarts. People had given them weird looks when they saw them together. At first, Seraphina had thought it was because of their unlikely friendship, but then Hadrian had explained that the tree they were leaning against was a Whomping Willow, an aggressive tree known to attack anyone who got near until someone deactivated its defences. Unfortunately, only a small number of people know how to do that, so everyone just stayed clear of it for their safety. Hadrian, however, had known how to stop it before he’d even stepped foot on Hogwarts premises.

“Huh. That’s really interesting.”

“Is that not how you activate the infamous Black Family Magic?” Seraphina asked, curious about the method he used to control his own legendary abilities.

“Hmm, not anymore, no. When I was younger, I struggled to control it. Mine is especially… overwhelming, so it took me a bit to be able to stop it and it activated whenever I experienced extreme emotions of any kind. I also had nightmares because of it, debilitating ones that had my powers activating in the dead of night, making it nearly impossible for my guardian to wake me up. To stop that, my grandfather gave me a necklace that would… well supress my powers until I could control them on my own. I’d wear it all the time except for when I was training and on specific times where I was learning to control my powers. I wore that thing for three and a half years and finally took it off last year.”

“What are your powers? For them to have such an effect on you.”

“You’ll just have to find out.” Hadrian replied with a cheeky grin, and Seraphina swatted at him softly.

“And why do you say guardian? Do you not live with your mother?” She was truly curious about his life, Seraphina was surprised to admit that, but it was true. While she was curious about her friends’ pasts, she couldn’t help feeling… really interested by the person sitting beside her.

“Nope.” He said casually before continuing. “My mother died a really long time ago. I live with my Godfather who has major custody of me alongside my grandfather and two aunts, who only have visitation rights so to speak.”

“That seems complicated. I just live with my paternal grandmother.”

“Oh you have no idea,” Hadrian said with laugh, “but it’s my life, so I’m pretty used to it. It does help me have close relationships with my cousins. Father’s side though, not my mother.”

“Why not? Did they not want to see you?”

“No, they… uh… they’re all dead.” That had Seraphina gasping in shock. “My mother’s Charlotte McKinnon.”

The McKinnon Family Massacre.” She gasped out, and felt her heart break at Hadrian’s calm nod.

“That’s the one.”

“I- I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Oh, it’s okay!” Hadrian hurried to assure her, putting a hand on her shoulder and giving her a sweet smile. “It was a long time ago, and I barely remember. Please don’t feel sorry.”

Her heart warmed at his comforting words. No one had ever really comforted her so softly yet casually, like it wasn’t a big deal for him to do so, like he was… happy she cared about him.

“It’s still sad, but I know how you feel. My parents… they passed away when I was young too. My mother was Celeste Rosier, and my father was her mate.”

“Oh Merlin. Your mother was killed in the Diagon Alley attack of ’84, wasn’t she?” At Seraphina’s confirming nod, Hadrian couldn’t help rubbing her back in comfort. “Yeah, that was a bad day for everyone. I won’t say I’m sorry for your loss cause that feels… impersonal to me, but I’ll say it was sad what happened to her.”

“Thank you.” Seraphina said with a soft sniff, and Hadrian couldn’t help smiling sadly at her. He turned her face towards his and wiped her tears.

“I’m guessing your dad died right after her, right?”

“Yes…. Fae cannot survive without their mates, not after meeting them at least. The human in the relationship can usually live with the grief, but the Fae cannot handle it.”

“Then I’ll try my best not to die then, if only to keep you alive.” That had Seraphina laughing softly.

“I’d appreciate that.”

The two continued talking some more about their relationship with their remaining family members and their different experiences growing up in France and England respectively.

It was a very relaxing conversation for Seraphina, and she started to understand why her parents’ relationship had been so sacred to them.

She had thought she’d hate Hogwarts from all her grandmother’s influence, but she found herself actually enjoying her time there. With her friends and soulmate by her side, she could easily face the unknown.
